Level 3 and 4: Score 15/16 12) From a point 120m horizontally from the base of a building, the angle of elevation to the top of the building is 34 degrees. Find the height of the building Incorrect Answer:

In this problem, I used SOHACAHTOA (TAN) to solve the problem. I had written my formula correctly; however, in my final answer I had omitted a zero and had written my answer as 8.94 instead of 80.94. This had been an unnecessary mistake, which could have been avoided by simply checking my work before handing it in. Correct answer shown below: Correct answer:

13) In triangle ABC, angle Incorrect Answer:

. Find angle C.

In the question shown above, I was to calculate for the value of angle theta. I had approached the problem in the correct manner however, instead of leaving my answer in the form of 50.59; I had tried to solve for another value of theta using the rule . This would have worked on several occasions; however, in this instance the rule would not apply because if the value of theta had been 129.41 and the other angle 62, I would have already contradicted the fact that the sums of all the angles within a triangle are 180.

18) An observer at the top of a tower of height 15m sees a man due west of her at an angle of depression 31. She sees another man due South at an angle depression of 17. Find the distance between the men: Incorrect answer: I had written my formula as

instead of its

correct form, which was, . Due to this mistake, my final answer was significantly off the correct answer.

21) Simplify: Incorrect Answer:

In the incorrect answer shown above, I had assumed that was the same as in the same way that is . However, by simply considering the properties of the unit circle one can clearly deduce that this assumption was incorrect. is the same as and therefore the correct answer is as shown below: Correct Answer:

22) (b) Establish a formula of the form Incorrect Answer:

In the incorrect answer shown above I had made a very careless mistake by assuming that the graph alongside (left) was a sine graph having the formula . Subsequently I had based my answer for the second graph on the fact that the other graph had the formula , which had resulted in me writing the formula for graph b as having 1/3 the amplitude of a normal sign graph, with an additional vertical translation of -2. The latter being the only difference between graph b and a normal sine graph. Correct answer shown below: Correct answer:

Thereafter, I applied the quadratic formula.

In this equation, I was to calculate for the EXACT value of . I had attempted to solve the problem by expanding the value of by using the double angle formula. This had proved correct; however, I had used the wrong simplification/formula within the double angle formulas. As a result, I had used two different values within my equation. One being and the other . Moreover, I had not fully simplified the equation. There would only be one answer, which would be possible while using the quadratic formula, and thereafter I would have to solve for the secondary value of that answer. Correct calculation shown below: Correct Answer:

Thereafter, I applied the quadratic formula in which

25) Find the area of the garden: Incorrect Answer: My method of approaching and solving the problem was correct however, in the step shown on the left I had written 47 instead of 49 and had therefore worked with incorrect values from then on.

Incorrect Answer:

The only reason I had not recieved full marks was because I had altered both sides of the formula prior to actually proving that the given formula was correct. The correct method where I dont move things across is as shown below: Correct Answer: Diagram Shown:

On the third to last step I had simplified to by utilizing the fact that . Thereafter, it was a simply process of simplification.

27) (a) Show that Incorrect Answer:

N/A (I had not attempted to solve this problem) Correct answer: The key to solving this problem is to understand that can be split into two separate angles, 45 and 30. Due to the fact these are standard geometrical values one can easily find their exact values; which can thereafter be combined using the addition formula. This method is as shown below: Values to know:

Thereafter one can apply the addition formula to combine these two values/angles.
