Great Gatsby and the 1920s

Objective: To teach students about the culture of the 1920s while reading the The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Process: 1.) KWL Chart--Have students brainstorm what they know and what they want to know about the 1920s. 2.) ArticleActively read an article about Fitzgerald's life and predict how it may influence the story of Gatsby. Highlight details related to how his life may have effected his work. 3.) The Book-- Start reading Great Gatsby, taking notes on events, people, places, etc that seem important to the development of the story. 4.) Character Chart Create a chart of the following characters, including their characteristics. 5.) 6.) Comprehension--Answer questions about book as progress through the novel Research Choose a topic relevant to the 1920s. It could include movies, fashion, bootlegging, social structure, music (Jazz), writers, etc. Then follow the research process to create a short research paper on the topic. Make sure it can be connected to Great Gatsby

7.) Final Essay-- Create an essay on some of the topics mentioned in the pages to follow. Use 5 paragraph format as well as the 5-Step Writing Process to create a well organized and analytical piece of work. Should include quotes from the text.
