Editorial Exhaust
After 4 months, I feel terrible that there is one person I really wanted to thank but had forgotten. Chris Krepski. He's done a wonderful job over the previous 3 years as The Link editor. This is a lot more work than I had though, and requires a good deal of discipline to work on The Link during those long evenings when my roommate is off playing Need for Speed on the PC ( =:] ). I'm not the only one who thinks that Chris did a great job. At the CASC-OR Annual General Meeting, The Link won second place newsletter for club over 100 members (more details on the CASC-OR AGM later in this issue). That was really Chris' hard work being rewarded. As I work on each month, I continuously compare what I've done with Chris' previous issues. I frequently end up kicking myself for not being able to produce at the same level as those issues, and it seems to only make my mistakes (like the missing/wrong dates in the last issue - oppps) so jarring. Anyways, I'm just saying that Chris has shoes that are hard to fill, and to thank him very much for the time he put into The Link during his editorship! -r.

November 2000 Executive Meeting Minutes

By Chris Capowski
At Louie's Steakhouse; November 21, 2000; from 1900 to 2130. Attended by - R. Woltman, C. Capowski, S. Mandia, D. Butler, S. Microys, R.B. Leckie, C. Pomeroy, M. Lowe, B. Chiu, A. Morti-mer, N. Mortimer, J. Hamilton, R. Benson, C. Holmsten, R. Muise, R. Wilson (Travel Edge) Membership - a membership report was not submitted for November. Travel Edge - Robert Wilson from Travel Edge introduced to the executive. Travel Edge has set up affinity programs with local non-profit organizations. A percentage of all travel expenses (20% of profits) billed through Travel Edge is returned to the non-profit organization that the traveler belongs to. - Customers do not have to be members of the club to provide financial benefits to the club. - We will possibly provide a link on our webpage to the Travel Edge site. - The executive has voted to accept Travel Edge's agreement. - We will clarify percentage on 20% of Net or all commissions received by Travel Edge. Time and Place of Meetings - Executive meetings have been changed to start at 7:00 PM sharp to facilitate the meetings ending earlier. - We currently have a conflict with the ORO meeting in Toronto. - Other possible choices for new nights for meeting are the second, third or forth Tuesday of the month. - It was agreed to keep the same location. - It was decided to wait until after ORO meeting before making a decision on change of night because the ORO meeting night may change and would no longer be a conflict. Appointments - J. Hamilton and A. Mortimer will be CoRace Directors - R. Muise and A. Gangopadhay will be Link editors - C.Capowski will be secretary - B. Chiu will be Member-, Media-, and Sponsor-Relations Director - R. Benson will be Treasurer - G. Acorn and H. Zhou will the membership co-chairs - D. Butler will be Rally Director - J. Morrow has agreed to be our liaison with C.A.R.S. - C. Holmsten will be Solo Director.

-We are still looking for a Social Director. - The executive wishes to thank S. Mandia and S. Microys for their service over the past year. - N. Mortimer has requested that each member's interests be distributed with the member list. Must ensure that this info is retrieved on membership forms. - R. Benson suggested having signing lists available at banquets and general meetings so that people can sign up as workers/participants for future MCO events/committees - Signing authority will be handled by the President - R. Woltman - R. Woltman would like to form several committees, including: -Trophy Committee. R. Woltman has asked M. Lowe to head the trophy committee. Asking that the committee review our current procedure of awarding trophies, with regard to worker points. - S. Microys spoke on behalf of R. Microys suggesting that we forego worker points to award trophies, and instead to award trophies solely on merit. - B. Chou has offered the services of a fellow student who would be willing to help with club issues. - R.B. Leckie has agreed to keep track of worker points of club members. - N. Mortimer has agreed to be our Chief Instructor for our Winter Driving School and Hi-Performance Driving School. - R. Woltman has asked S. Microys to be Chief Organizer for the summer High Performance Driving School. S. Microys has asked that this be only a temporary position due to other commitments. - R. Woltman is currently the organizer for the winter events, and has asked if anyone would like to take over this role. - B. Chou has agreed to be our publicity liaison for the winter series. - R. Microys has already been in touch with Penny Bell to reserve Capital City Speedway at the same price as last year. He has also agreed to be in charge of watering the track. - Watering the track fully will require approximately 5-7 loads of water at $125/load. - An alternative site has been suggested for the winter series (rock quarry) - This location was turned down because our insurance does not cover loss/damages due to falling through ice. Ice Racing Series - Issues with ice race series: - need facilities for washrooms, timing & scoring, and able to manage the approximately 50 workers needed to run a full ice race event. - We would need someone outside of the executive who has the ability/experience to manage the entire series. - The executive has decided that it is too late in the season to start a project of this scope.

Track Rental - Le Circuit Mt. Tremblant will not be available until July 8th. - We have no guarantee that we will have a weekend available to us. - Shannonville Motorsport Park (SMP) is available May 5/6 (Fabi track) and June 16/17 (Long track), costs of track rental are: Fabi $3000/day, Nelson $2800/day, Long $4600/day, with 50% payment upfront. - Possibly use the Mosport Driver Development Track (track has limitations to number of drivers on track at same time). - Possibly use Mt. Tremblant as a second event later in the summer, with less emphasis on instruction, and more of a lapping/fun weekend. First spots should be given to workers of MCO High Performance Driving School and the MCO/TLMC race weekend. Banquet - Louis Steak House has been booked for 60 people. - Final numbers of attendees does not have to be provided until immediately before banquet. - We have been provided with lots of door prizes plus Solo II prizes by our sponsors. - R & S Microys will be the MC's for the event ORO Meeting - R. Microys and C. Armstrong are attending the meeting this evening in Toronto. - Possibly change the night of our executive meetings so that they no longer conflict with the ORO meetings. This may not be an issue if the ORO changes their meeting night. - Canaska Cup will be July 7/8 this year. - R. Woltman will be Secretary of the Meet - S. Microys will be Registrar Karting - A. Mortimer has agreed to be our karting liaison. - We are now affiliated with ASN Canada FIA Karting (we are the only local club that is affiliated with ASN). - Possible sites for our karting series are: SLM Park, Karters Corners, and possibly the Alcatel parking lot. The Corel Center has turned down our request to possibly hold events at their location. - A potential sponsor (Saturn Aylmer) has already approached the club to help MCO put on a karting series. - We are looking at possibly putting on a four event series. - We should approach NCKC for cooperation with events Executive Articles - R. Woltman is strongly encouraging all executive members to submit a Link article each month. (continued on page 11)

From The Drivers Seat

by Ron Woltman
Welcome everyone to the Christmas edition of The Link. Happy to see your eyes scanning the pages of Ontario Region's multiple award-winning club magazine. A large landscape to cover this month so here goes. The names of your 2001 executive and their coordinates are printed on the masthead. We are here to work with and for you. This is the third time I occupy this post, and I know all too well, that presidential pleas to immerse yourself in the MCO landscape, have had modest impact. My intention is to go to you directly! The executive has been charged to go forth, ask for help and delegate where required. In other words, bring people into the fold. Thus far, early in the game, I am heartened, indeed, with the positive response to that approach. For example, I called up Jim Morrow to act as MCO's representative between CARS and the club, and yes was the immediate answer. Thanks Jim. Nigel Mortimer agreed to act as Chief Instructor for both the Winter Driving Schools and our Hi-Performance summer events. Mike Lowe is chairing the Trophy, Points and Awards review committee; a review, I felt, long overdue. He has a mandate to put together a team. Other people will be calling on YOU for help. Reply in the affirmative. Sherissa Microys acquiesced to show someone the ropes in organizing the summer driving school, for which she as ample experience. See her soon. Moreover, she is going to be head registrar for our July 7/8 Shannonville race. Get in the starting gate early for that event MCO's premier event of 2001 - before all the positions are gone! Another commitment I intend executing this year is to ensure the minutes are printed each Link issue. It is starkly evident to Mike Lowe and I, as we relive the past during our epic journey through MCO's history, that attempting to scratch out the rich and ribald history of this club, that absent club minutes is akin to Richard Nixon's missing 18-minute tape. It's 'history' gone missing!

Adam Mortimer and Jeremy Hamilton are sharing race director duties; Adam tending toward 'open-wheel', as he also is our karting man, though each will be interchangeable. Sam Mandia has graciously offered his considerable experience to their collective efforts. Racers - make sure you tell them how you did each weekend. They are not clairvoyant. Chris Holmsten has stepped up to home plate to assume the role of Solo director. Big spot on the diamond, but abundant help is promised from the 'old' pros' Rob Microys, Gord Acorn, Richard Muise, Jaak Laan and many others. Dave Butler is the Rally rep on exec, responsible for liaison with Jim Morrow (CARS rep), along with mailman, my stand-in, taking care of incorporation papers, and more. Basil Chiu is casting his magic in an attempt to increase member participation, promote member retention, spin some public relations and sponsorship, the hotline and more. Already, he has put in place a deal for the club with The Travel Edge, whereby members can take advantage of individual, family or group travel, and the club benefits. Space precludes replete details here - but Baz will explain the benefits. Past President Rob has promised to play an active role in that position - which, as past presidents can attest, is a rarity indeed. I need an organizer for the Winter Driving Series, and while much groundwork has been laid, please see me if you are interested? I going to act as Secretary of the Meet for our Canaska Cup Shannonville race. Rob, Cindy and I are putting together a race committee NOW. Get on board early. Good news. John Blouin is out of the hospital and hard at work building a brand new Trans-Am car! TTFNthe 'P'.

The Dinosaurs View

From DIRECTOR to VICEPRESIDENT, finally by David E. Butler

Like a dinosaur that seems to have been around for an extremely long time, I guess I have finally made the grade or, at least, I decided there is no time like the present to make the transition from a Directorial position up to Assistant to the President. It seems to have a nice ring to it and it comes with a key to the Executive Washroo, ...er, make that the Club Mailbox. Whether to call this the wrap up for the year 2000 or the beginning of the start for the true new Millennium in 2001 is difficult to say and what to call my new column is a problem. Maybe, I'll just call it, "The Dinosaur's View". That does not necessarily mean that all comments and thoughts are old hat - it just means that I have been involved, like Ronald, for a long time. 2000 definitely was interesting year, going from our lively discussions about whether or not we should get back into our roots in Rallying to actually setting up and running both a Corporate Rally with a second well into the planning stage and Jaak & Jim's Drivex Highland Rally. Looking back, I wish I had given a TSD (Time-Speed-Distance) Navex (an event intended to require more work by the Navigator than by the driver) Rally School to the Learnix crowd. They could have used a lot more guidance both for the terms and for the Treasure Hunt portion that they asked to be included as part of the actual rally. The Treasure Hunt element added the need for the driver to be equally aware of all signs and sights along the way. We expect to do a TSD Rally School for Club members and interested Corporate Groups in the coming year. If it were not quite so late in the season, this year, it would be worth our while to attempt to try to run a Fall Night Rally or an Early Winter Day Rally before the real winter encourages us to stay in the warmth of our homes. As Vice President in the new Executive, Ronald expects me to carry on representing the Rally elements and interests, to which I have agreed. However, not being as closely involved with the C.A.R.S. - RSO [RallySport Ontario] group, I suggested that Jim (continued on page 8)

CASC-OR AGM in Review

by Rob Microys
This past Saturday November 18th, CASC-OR held its Annual Member Meeting and Banquet. A small group of MCO was present including myself, Cindy Armstrong, Jennifer Armstrong, Ian Madden, Frank Smith, Bryan Dickman and Pier Bortot. On to the meat of the story. The Annual Member Meeting started with the reports from the various Board of Directors. Laurence Polley presented his report that detailed the new CASC-OR 2001 business plan. He mentioned the notion of the Canadian runoffs returning. Most importantly as was mentioned by almost all director's reports was the participation, recruitment and retention of existing workers - this was evidently portrayed in the fact that the nominating committee for the region did not have a full slate for nominations to fill the positions up for election. More on that later. Art Mosley presented his updated CASCOR bylaws that were sent out for changes earlier this year to the Clubs. He was very distraught that only two region clubs had returned comments with respect to revising the bylaws. Yet more mention on worker apathy and participation from clubs - do we sense a theme? Bob Varey's report indicated we had a banner year financially and in driver participation, yet officials' licenses were down. CASC-OR has two new clubs this year, the Honda Acura Driver's Association and Formula Twelve Hundred Driver's Association bringing up the club count to 26. CASC-OR will administer the Canada Challenge Cup again in 2001 and that the members equity in the region is up to $205,813.19 from $170,767.95 in 1999. So the region is financially healthy. Gunter Schmidt, presented his race report. Total of 1632 entries, and over 50 penalties (bad drivers, bad!) Ontario Challenge constituted most of the entries followed by Canada Challenge, and F1600 and FV1200. The worst news was the increase in penalties, of which pit lane speed violations (hmm, did I have

something to do with that?) and passing under yellow being the highest and most concerning penalties. Look out next year for rule changes and strict enforcement! Did I mention worker problems earlier? Well, worker participation almost shut races down on us last year, something to think about... Mavis Burnham had the Ice Race report, despite weather problems, they had 4 race days with an average of 75 competitors per day. Solo II had no report and Solo I had a brief report indicating the success and continued growth of the Solo I series in Ontario - it included the mention of maybe running events a Cayuga in 2001. Also mentioned was the inception of a new series. The Nissan Challenge Cup. This is a spec series based on the new Nissan Sentra SE (four door, 2.0l engine) which looks pretty exciting. Cars will be made available by Nissan at reduced costs, for full details contact Dave Diedrick at (905) 619-8813 or Laurence Polley (905) 846-5175. The elections were held, which required milking of the attendees to obtain members to run for all the positions. Your newly elected (all acclaimed) representatives which were elected this year include: Laurence Polley (President), Paul Anderson (Treasurer), Mavis Burnham (Ice Race), Perry Iannuzzi (Solo-I), George Dedopolous (Solo-II). The Vice President and Race Directors remain on for another term, Art Mosley and Gunter Schmidt respectively. Roger Peart from ASN Canada was also there, and provided a lengthy report on the state of affairs of karting which suffered a poor year from the National perspective, rallying, with good news that the Charleviox rally is attempting to attain WRC status, and the fact that FIA is likely to move back to Paris from Geneva. The banquet was pretty good, with a number of MCO members making their way to the podium, including another award for the Club for its newletter, The Link. Congrats! That about sums it up...

The TRAVEL EDGE

THE MCO'S NEWEST SPONSOR
The MCO has entered into a causerelated marketing agreement with The Travel Edge. They are the local arm of a branchless travel agency based in Toronto. For any business a MCO member does with The Travel Edge's Ottawa consultant, the travel agency will donate 20 per cent of the net profit, on that particular transaction, to the MCO. This offer extends to family and friends referred by MCO members. Said The Travel Edge Ottawa owner, Robert Wilson: "we're new here in Ottawa. We just want to let everyone know how competitive, if not more so than our competition, we are." Asked why members should do business with The Travel Edge, Mr. Wilson replied with a grin: "we work harder." "We're very happy to have The Travel Edge support the MCO," said MCO sponsor relations director, Basil Chiu. "I haven't done any business with The Travel Edge yet. But if they're as good as Mr. Wilson says, then the MCO can only win in this deal. If service- and qualitywise, The Travel Edge is indiscernible from all the rest, then, honestly, why should any MCO member go anywhere else?" Many thanks to Albert Cohoe, for alerting the executive to this opportunity. You can book your next vacation at www.TravelEdgeOttawa.com, traveledgeottawa@home.com, or (613) 260-7012. Morrow be asked to be our Representative with them. Thankfully, Jim accepted that role and our affiliation with CARS-RSO will be a reality as soon as they send us the new forms. Still reviewing my participation in the Rally events during the past year, there was the fun competing in the first Winter Rally event near Hawkesbury, last January or February or whenever it was. Setting up the Corporate Rally, brought a thrill of a different kind. Generally, I do not like heights but they don't bother me when others are with me or if it's during the day but I must admit, it took me over an hour to work up my courage to drive over the Paugan Dam between 3:00 am and 4:00 am when I was out alone checking the route, one final time. Initially, I thought I would sleep until dawn but then I could not go to sleep and the dawn still seemed far away. I finally did it, but as I said, it took awhile. Later on, when Jim and Jaak were discussing it after reviewing the route, I found that they had a similar feeling - but they too survived. For the Highland Rally, I was considering using the route or, at least,

a large portion of it for the Nortel Networks Corporate Rally (which was postponed to next spring). Therefore, I had to drive the route to check out the route. In so doing, I almost didn't make it to my Checkpoint location on time. However, my biggest scare came just before I reached the Ronald Woltman/Nick Berry checkpoint. My car got completely sideways (to the road) on some of those loose gravel sections. Then and there, I decided that my car needed better tires for a better grip - BUT, I also came to appreciate what all of the competitors of the Drivex must be enjoying. It was an excellent route and I hope we will use it again during the coming year. Enough, enough already about rallying! I guess, whether it is defined as a 2000 event or part of the fiscal year which begins on November 1st, one of my disappointments thus far, is/was our lack of participation in the year 2000 Santa Claus Parade. No one offered to organize it and, of course, our best SPECIAL EVENTS coordinator, Mike Lowe, was over in England at the time. Will we be

invited back next year? - We do not know, which really is too bad! It seems, there was a question of PR value - but, for those of us who enjoyed taking part in it during previous years, its absence brought sadness at a time when we all should have been very happy. We even could have put the same float together for the Kemptville Kinsmen's Santa Claus parade on Sunday, November 26th (a conflict with the Grey Cup, I know) but once again there was no one willing to put the MCO name forward for the sheer fun and happiness of Children of all ages. Personally, I think that that was a shame, but what do I know. I'm only a dinosaur and that is my view! So until the next time, we meet, enjoy the coming Holiday Season and we'll see you in the new Millennium. David E. Butler

2000 Corporate Rally Report

by David E. Butler
The Learnix Corporate Rally was run on September 23rd, 2000. In general, it was a success and it may be done again next year. However, as a recommendation, a mini TSD Rally School should accompany the event. This gives both the Organizers and the Competitors time to get familiar with the types of instructions likely to be used throughout the event. In addition, if the event was not checked sufficiently well before hand, this gives the operator of the Course Opening vehicle time to determine if there are any trouble spots along the way. Having said that, you can guess that there were some problems encountered during the 2000 event, but primarily the event was basically saved by R.Bennett Leckie's prior rally experience.

Nevertheless, an event of this magnitude could not have even gotten off the ground without the cooperation of the members who checkpointed and checked the route prior to its running. Therefore, my sincere appreciation is extended to all of the following workers: Gordon Greig (CP 1) , Rob Microys (CP 2 & 4), Jaak Laan, (CP 3,5 & 12), Ronald Woltman (CP 6 & 11), Jim Morrow (CP 7 & 9), Mike S. Lowe (CP 8), Basil Chiu (CP 10) and Bennett (CP 13). In addition, Bennett did Course Opening and Scoring both while working his Final Checkpoint and at the finish which had been moved from the Day Lodge to the Golf Club by the folks at Mont Ste. Marie. Although Mike Lowe only did one Checkpoint - taking pictures at the Wakefield Covered Bridge, he provided excellent assistance with the Treasure Hunt portion and helped with scoring at the finish. As a final kudo, both Jaak & Jim took up the challenge and reconnoitred the entire route before the event. You have

probably already heard about all their trials and trepidations along the route, so enough said. As mentioned, above, all route cards were scored and prizes were issued based on that scoring alone but, if the Treasure Hunt portion had been included, the overall results probably would have changed the final outcome. Anyone interested in knowing those results should contact Nigel Harris, President, Learnix Corporation. We appreciated his cooperation before, during and afterwards. Unexpectedly, he provided T-shirts for all of the workers and a vest-type jacket to me. Hopefully, they will choose to have us do another event for them next year.

2000 Executive Member Profile:

Basil Chiu-member, media and sponsor relations
"WILL YOU COME OUT TO PLAY?" This year, I'm widening my scope. Last year, I just focused on sponsorship, with a little media relations. This year, I'm including member relations. We can accomplish a lot more, if we all show appreciation to each other, and help our fellow members feel good about helping a larger cause than just helping ourselves. Why this turn? Any event worth sponsoring has people helping out. You probably know help is a little scarce in this club. If you never see the administration of the club, everything is likely fine. From the administration side, we're over half a century old, and we don't even have a permanent place to hold our trophies. Grass roots doesn't mean we have to be perpetually scraping by on labour and money. We could be doing more and better with little extra investment. There are problems. For one thing, this club offers nothing to sponsors. Their perception of us is we're a notch up from a couple o' guys meeting in someone's garage. What we have is esoteric. My job is to figure how to make it common knowledge, with limited time, money and help.

We need to add value-cachet for sponsors. And that's the second problem: sponsors don't want to be a part of us until we have an event worth sponsoring, i.e.: until we get a bunch of people out to throw a great event (from a sponsor's perspective). People don't want to come out to help until it's a wellorganised event, i.e.: an event with cachet-an event worth sponsoring. An example: sponsors don't want to give us door prizes because few attend. Few attend because there aren't any door prizes. I'll also invite the media. They tend to increase cachet for both sponsors and members who are thinking of helping the group. However, media don't come out to play until there's a game worth playing. And those need people! Enthusiastic people are the value we need to add to make sponsors want to be associated with us. People create that cachet others want to be a part of. If you want this club to be wealthier, and if you see your enjoyment being directly proportional to the club's wealth, then you have to be more enthusiastic about the club's welfare. Enthusiasm is currently our only commodity. The best thing is: the more you put into the club, the more fun you'll have. I've already analysed the club's situation last year. We have local high-tech firms clambering over each other for employees. It happens what we do appeals to those employees. The club itself is a demographic and

psychographic match to those employees. I see go-karting and Solo racing to be the best bets, both for their accessibility. Regarding helping out, the executive expects to post a duty roster at each general meeting. Interested members can sign up for a task. We'll probably also distribute a skills and assets inventory. Many members have stated they would've helped if only someone had asked. An inventory will let the executive council know whom to ask. And this way, you do what you want to do. I realise everyone is busy. I'll do my best to provide specific, manageable tasks, rather than just ask an arbitrary, "can anyone help?" This is my second year as a member. I started last year because I had to complete fifty-something hours of community volunteer work, in a public relations capacity, in order to pass a course at Algonquin College. I stayed because I liked it. I caught the Formula-1 bug in high school, worked at Jim Russell Racing Drivers' School, and would like to race once I figure out how this sponsorship thing works. Your club never has enough help. Having sponsors attracts help, and the money buys nice toys. I know you like nice toys.

The Torch Has Been Passed

A message from your PastPresident by Rob Microys
I have to thank everybody who came out this year to make our Annual General Meeting the success that it was. The turnout at 8:00pm had me worried as a quorum was not yet established and we were short a good handful of people, but a few quick phone calls before the General Meeting, and a few late arrivals ensured that we had enough people to close the books on the 2000 season. Thanks again, as we couldn't have done it without you - the members. For those of you who did not attend the meeting, I would like to introduce your newly elected (by acclimation) board of directors: President: Ron Woltman, Vice President: Dave Butler, Directors: Chris Holmsten, Adam Mortimer, Basil Chiu and Jeremy Hamilton. Thanks to these bold guys to steer the club for the year! It takes a lot of guts to run for the executive. An aside, thinking that MCO has a problem getting people to run for the board, the Region is experiencing even more problems. Two weeks prior to the CASC-OR AGM, they had yet to obtain any candidates for the elections for Regional office. So I consider ourselves lucky to have had a full slate (but it certainly required a lot of coaxing) at our AGM. I will be attending the CASC-OR AGM on November 25th, and have a full report in this issue of The Link. My role this coming year is going to be much more limited than last year. Your new

executive is going to have a challenging growth year ahead with a number of projects including the publishing of the book, running the Canaska Cup race, and continuing to grow and expand the club in new areas. Help is needed to achieve this growth can be given in many ways, from simply spreading the gospel and attracting new members, to volunteering personal time to events that we run and participate in. I hope that you all support your new executive in their endeavors and help out. In the meantime, I'm going to continue to be active on the executive, continuing to offer my opinions and help. I will be spending more time on the website over the next few months as I have more time on my hands, having passed on my presidential duties. Look for some new and exciting changes to the site. If you have any suggestions or desired content or features, now is your chance. I'm hoping to make the site more interactive, and able to do things like register for events and such on-line (but don't look for online payment of registration fees anytime soon, we don't accept VISA account numbers, yet.) Some members have mentioned the thought of having a "Members Only" section, possibly even having The Link and other club resources available on-line to members. If this sort of thing interests you, and since I am not able read your mind, drop me a line at r.microys@home.com and let me know what we can do to make the website better for the club membership. A mention of thanks must also be given at this point to Craig Baltzer and Anjura Technology Corporation for providing us our domain name (www.mco.org), the hosting of the website, and the electronic services that many of the members use. Thanks again Craig.

MCO's Banquet 2000

By Sherissa Microys
MCO held its annual banquet this past November 25th at Louis' Steakhouse. 56 members, family and sponsors gathered in their banquet room, which is on the opposite side from our regular meeting room. It was nicely decorated by the restaurant staff to my amazement, which left little for me to do. Prior to dinner we were able to watch a video taped from that same morning. TSN had shown a one-hour program about the Canada Cup series for which our own John Blouin was recently the chief steward, along with many MCO assistants. Our club also produced 3 of the top 6 teams in GT1 who were highlighted in the show. The show reviewed the 1999 and 2000 season in a very professional manner. Hopefully some of you were able to also catch it. Dinner was amazing with a nice salad to start, before receiving the largest piece of extremely tender and flavorful prime rib I have ever had. I would find it hard to believe anyone left hungry. Very delicious deserts of our choosing followed dinner. I took the white and chocolate mousse, which was divine! During coffee the awards were presented starting with a thanks to our sponsors who provided most of the prizes given out during the evening. The list of recipients is listed. (Note: one required 300 worker points for the majority of trophies). With about 30 door prizes also, not many went home empty handed. Hope to see everyone at next year's activities and festivities.

Annual General Meeting November 7, 2000

By Jennifer Armstrong
At Louis' Steakhouse, November 7, 2000. The AGM was called to order at 8:59 p.m. by Bennett Leckie. It was established that there were 45 voting members in attendance which constituted a quorum. Nick Berry moved to approve the agenda and this was seconded by Brian Dickman. The President's report was presented by Rob Microys. This was basically a synopsis of his written report which was included on page 9 of The Link for November 2000. The Vice-President's report was presented by Ron Woltman. As he had not included an official report in The Link for November 2000 he took this occasion to: say thank you for the opportunity of representing the club in his role as V.P.; mention the fact that our karting group has undertaken to affiliate with ASN; mention that the affiliation of our rally members has been deferred to 2001; mention that an advertising/PR deal is in progress; and say a special thanks to Mike Lowe, Bill Lamb, the current executive (Rob Microys, Sherissa Microys, Jaak Laan, Richard Muise, Chris Krepski and Chris Capowski) as well as Ken Baird and Bev Millar. The Director's reports were presented by: Sam Mandia - who noted that MCO members are well represented in many open wheel classes. Jaak Laan - who provided a synopsis of the rally and solo reports included on pages 8 and 13 of The Link for November 2000. Dave Butler - who thanked everyone for their help. Sherissa Microys - who stated that she has enjoyed the last three years working as a member of the executive; noted that our racers had once again had a tremendous season (see her report on page 11 of The Link for November 2000); welcomed Jim Holtom to the club as a notable new member; commented on the many MCO members who took part - both as competitors

and workers - at the Canaska Cup race; and noted that MCO will be taking over as the lead organizing club for the Canaska Cup race in 2001. The Treasurer's report was presented by Robert Benson. The club has a free balance of $20,851. For the details see the cash flow statement on pages 3 and 12 and the accompanying explanation on page 11 of The Link from November 2000. The actions of the current officers were ratified by all present. There was no old or new business identified. All members of the executive for 2001 were acclaimed. They are Jeremy Hamilton (Director), Adam Mortimer (Director), Chris Holmston (Director), Basil Chiu (Director), Dave Butler (Vice-President) and Ron Woltman (President). Rob Microys moved to adjourn the meeting and this was seconded by Brian Dickman at 9:23 p.m.

The format was approved at this meeting and it will be available in the near future. 4. The entry fee for the OCC will be reduced to $325 to bring it in line with all other regional classes. This still includes four passes. 5. The new rule for car numbers has been finalized. There is a bulletin providing all the details published elsewhere in this copy of the Link. 6. A formal process will be developed to determine how decibel levels will be measured. Restrictions will be phased in over the next couple of seasons with the worst offenders being targeted immediately. 7. Due to the serious health issues posed by the addition of various noxious substances to fuel, CASC will be mandating - for 2001 - that all F1200 and F1600 cars must purchase and run the pump fuel which is available at the track on any given weekend. If you are using any of these substances you should be aware that they are not just unpleasant; they can be deadly for you and those around you! 8. There will be a race engineering workshop held in Toronto around the end of February or beginning of March. Details will be furnished as they become available. As always, if there are any issues that you are looking for an answer on please let me know. If I can answer I will, if not I will find someone who can.

A monthly feature outlining upcoming initiatives in Ontario Region

The Inside Line

by Cindy Armstrong
Last November I felt that it was an opportune time for the Ottawa region race drivers to be personally represented at the Ontario Race Organizers (ORO) and Race Committee meetings. To this end I made the trek to Toronto on the third Tuesday of each month. It has been many years since a representative from Ottawa has been attendance at these meetings; I would assume because they are held on a weekday evening and it takes a huge commitment to arrange work and personal life in order to attend. The experience was informative and - at least once a month - exhausting. I hope that you, the racers in the club, have received some benefit from my being at these meetings to argue the issues on your behalf and get information back to you in a timely fashion. Ever the optimist, I assume that the lack of feedback I have had doesn't display total apathy to the process but rather concurrence with the results which have been achieved. So ... what's in the works for next year?
