Parents, I would like to welcome you and your student to my classroom. I have been teaching now for nine years, with this being my second year at El Dorado High School. I do teach at EHS and at our alternative programExtend. In this letter, I will give you and your student an idea of what it will be like to be in my class, how to contact me, and what we will cover during the course of first semester.

The English 11 Honors Course


This year, in English 11 Honors our daily schedule will be filled with many activities: Independent Reading Writing Prompts Grammar for Editing & Revising our Writing Content Reading American Literature Focus

Writing Prompts
We will be working on increasing the quantity and quality of writing everyday. We will work on writing in many different formats, for many different audiences, and using many different skills.

Donations Welcome

Grammar & Vocabulary


Students will be working through packets of grammar work and will then use those skills to edit and revise their own writing. Students will be studying root words/suffixes/prefixes.

Supplies Needed
Classrooms are always in need of supplies. Do not feel you HAVE to donate, but if you can spare the time/money/effort to donate, it would be greatly appreciated!

Independent Reading
Your student will set his/her own independent reading goal for the semester. Each day will begin with a 10-15 minute Independent Reading period. They will also be expected to read for homework everyday. We will be doing several different activities to share our reading with our peers. Be sure to ask your student what they are reading and what they think of their books and how they are progressing on their goals!

Content Reading
Our focus is American literature. We will be looking at how American literature became its own and look at several classic, as well as contemporary, works. Possible pieces and works include: Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, Sandra Cisneros, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Pearl, and many more.

To Be Successful
Attend school everyday. Pay attention. Ask questions. Participate in all class activities. Do the workin class & homework. Set personal goals for improvement!

Twitter & Blogging


Your student will be asked to use Twitter and Blogs to share their reading/writing with each other and other audiences. Ms. Qs classroom Twitter account can be found by searching @msquiram. If you do NOT want your student to use Twitter, please contact me so we can work out an alternative plan.
