Questions: 1. After applying the NDVI ratio, why does the image appear black? 2.

What are the data limits (of each band) before and after the NDVI transform? (you will have to reopen the 341 image and inspect the Transform window for each band) 3. Briefly describe (i) how a histogram conveys information about an band or image and (ii) how histograms may be used for image interpretation. Think about your response from question 1. 4. What (visual) effect does the Create Autoclip Transform button have on the (i) image; and (ii) histogram? 5. Describe the main difference between an algorithm and an image, such as the *.ers format?
1. The image appear black after applying the NDVI ratio because the formula processing produces a narrow range of data values (-1 to +1) 2. The data limits of each bands before NDVI transform shows a data range of about 0 to 255. After the NDVI formula processing, the x axis data range changes to -1 to +1 and the y axis shows 0 to 255 3. A histogram graphically represents the distribution of intensity values of the image across the display range. A histogram showing the relative frequency of data values for the processed image appears in the center of the transform dialog. Areas of vegetation in the image are highlighted in light gray or white, and areas with little or no vgetation (such as water) appear very dark. We can increase the contrast between the light and dark areas even further. 4. create autoclip transform makes contrast between the light and dark areas further increases. The lightest shades (densely vegetated areas) are now white and darkest shades (non-vegetated areas) are black, making patterns of vegetation easier to interpret. 5. An algorithm is a list of processing steps or instruction ERMapper uses to transform raw data on disk into a final, enhanced image. In this sense, algorithms let us define a view into our data that we can save, reload, and modify at any time. As for image *ers is a format that used in ERMapper software. A digital image is stored as a two dimensional array of small areas called pixels and each pixels corresponds sptially to an area on the earths surface.
