NOISY 250 SERIES ENGINE FUEL PUMPS

An unusual noise at time of start or shutdown should not be the sole basis for determining that a Fuel Pump or Hydromechanical Unit is unserviceable. The gears that comprise the pumping elements of the pump and the gear bearings are lubricated by the fuel being pumped. When the pump rotational speed decreases, the discharge pressure drops. Eventually, the point is reached where the fluid film decreases between the rotating and stationary parts and a noise may result. The noise may occur on both startup and shutdown, but it is usually most noticeable during engine shutdown. The speed at which noise begins to occur varies from pump to pump. Thorough examination of the detail parts of pumps removed because of excessive noise has not revealed any discrepancy associated with the noisy operation. We wish to again emphasize that noise alone should not be the sole reason for premature removal of a pump that is otherwise operating satisfactorily.
