EES 612 (Spring 2012) Additional Exercise on DC Machines

When energized by an armature voltage of 230 V and delivering its rated shaft power of 38 kW to a load, a DC motor spins at 1750 rpm and draws an armature current of 214 A. The armature resistance S Ra = 0.12 fi. The field current is assumed to be constant in all sections of this problem. (a) Calculate the flux constant kI, standstill torque, and start-up current of this motor. (b) Calculate the rotational power losses and the efficiency of this motor at 1750 rpm and shaft power of 38 kW. (c) If the rotational power losses (in Watts) are proportiona! to the cube of speed (in rad/s), such , 3 that rot = Bw calculate the proportionality constant B. (d) Calculate the speed and armature current of this motor at an armature voltage of 115 V and no load. (e) Repeat (d) if the machine delivers 80% of its rated load torque.
