Computational algorithm
The computation of the saturation and pressure distributions was
carried out using the algorithm
(Chart 1)
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
The system of linear equations, equations (35) to (39)
and (42) to (45) was solved using the algorithm of the
Modified Gaussian Elimination Method (MGEM) (Oko,
2008).The algorithm was implemented in Visual Basic for
Application in Microsoft Excel. The results obtained
based on hypothetical well production data are shown in
Figures 1 to 6.
Figures 1 and 2 show that significant variation of
saturation occurs close to the wellbore and the variation
approaches steady-state condition as one moves far
away from the wellbore. The figures show the practical
phenomena of water conning.
Figure 3 shows the dimensionless pressure distribution
at water saturation of 0.7[-] and dimensionless time of
0.0005 [-], while Figure 4 shows dimensionless pressure
distribution at corresponding saturation at the same
dimensionless time. One will observes from Figures 3
and 4, that in Figure 3 with a water saturation of 0.7 [-]
has a lesser magnitude of pressure distribution, which
can be seen at the dimensionless radius 1.0[-] as
compared to Figures 4 with varied saturation at the same

dimensionless time of 0.0005 [-]. Therefore, Figures 3
and 4 shows that pressure distribution in porous media is
a strong function of saturation.
Figures 4 and 5 show a decrease in the magnitude of
the pressure distribution as the dimensionless time
increases from 0.0005 to 0.0025 [-] at the corresponding
saturation distribution and at constant media properties
and fluid properties, which is an indication of the transient
pressure and saturation distribution. Figures 3, 4 and 5
also indicate variation of the pressure with the angle,
which may be due to presence of aquifer and/or the
topography of the reservoir.
The wellbore pressure (Figure 6) is decaying with time
(pressure depletion). As this happens, then we shall
expect that a time will come when the wellbore pressure
will be equal to the atmospheric pressure. When this
happens, natural production in the well is going to stop
and hence further attempt to get oil from the well can only
be by artificial means in which case there has to be a gas
injection or water flooding or other means of recovery
(Onyekonwu, 1997).
Conclusion
This paper has succeeded in presenting the saturation
and pressure distributions in oil and water flow through
semi-infinite porous media. The generalized
(dimensionless) results can easily be inverted to obtain
dimensional values for concrete cases by using the
appropriate inversion formula, Equation (22). The solution
scheme and computer language adopted in this work are
easy to apply and use as opposed to the sophisticated
and expensive computer software used by most
researchers in the area. Since the results presented were
based on hypothetical well production data, the
immediate future work should, therefore, be the validation
of the model and solution presented in this work with
typical oil well production data.
