Hazard Alert - Storing of items in Front of Electrical Switchboards

It has been recently discovered that some electrical switchboards and switchboard cupboards around campus have been obstructed so that access is prevented or inhibited. When this occurs it not only provides a hazard for Maintenance staff but also places the people in the building at risk. Australian/New Zealand Standard 3000:2000 has specified in section 2.9.9 Accessibility for Switchboards that: Adequate space shall be provided around a switchboard on all sides where persons are to pass to enable all electrical equipment to be safely and effectively operated and adjusted. This Standard is called up in the Electrical Safety Regulation 2002 and therefore compliance is mandatory. The switchboards noted have been obstructed by items like, cabinets, photo copiers, bins, shelving and other items. This prevents maintenance personnel from gaining access and when they try to move the items it increases the risk of injury due to manually moving these items for entry. Please ensure that no items are placed or stored in front of any electrical switchboards, or electrical switchboard cupboards.

What to do if you notice an obstructed switchboard? If you notice a switchboard that has been obstructed then you should notify your supervisor/manager and the Workplace Health & Safety Officer of your area and move the items to a place for storage that is not a potential hazard. A distance or radius large enough to allow the door to open should be provided to ensure adequate space for electrical equipment to be effectively operated and adjusted.
