Poetry: On a cold winter night

On a cold winter night We were all snowed in, Laughing and joking, Playing rummy and gin

The flickering fire Defrosting our toes, Outside in the darkness The howling wind blows. The lazy cat stretching His limbs by the hearth, Then someone came knocking, Interrupting our mirth. The dog barked a warning And stood the door. Mom looked through the peephole Then faint to the floor.

For there stood the snowman We built that same day. He said "Let me in,

Don't turn me away. For hours and hours I've stood in the yard, Smelled smoke from the chimney And watched you play cards. I've been longing to know The warmth of a home, I can't spend my life Feeling cold and alone."

So we welcomed him in, Gave him cocoa to sip, And all through the ev'ning We watched him drip... drip... He was def'nitely melting But he didn't care, Didn't seem to be bothered By the way we all stared. And though we tried to explain That this couldn't be right, He just wouldn't go out On a cold winter night.
