The Madrid fitness sandal is celebrating a major anniversary. This style first came on the market fifty years ago, in 1963. The sandal with the flexible cork footbed was a market innovation and helped the Birkenstock brand to achieve worldwide success. And the Madrid fitness sandal is still a bestseller around the globe. You can find more information about it on page 10.
With our closed styles, we have fused a clog with a shoe still retaining the timeless, classical Birkenstock character in the process. The soft suede nestles gently against your foot, treating you to pleasant comfort. On page 48 you will find more information on our closed styles.
To guarantee you optimal comfort in our sandals and clogs, our footbed comes in two widths: The normal width for normal feet and the narrow width for particularly narrow feet.

Everyones feet are different. That is why we offer our deep footbed in two different widths: a normal width for normal feet and a narrow width for especially slender feet. In order to create a perfect fit, the upper sections are aligned with the width of the respective deep footbed. Combined with the adjustability provided by the straps, this creates a tailored shoe that fits your feet perfectly. When buying your preferred Birkenstock style, make sure that there are a few mm space in the heel and in front of the toes. Your toes need this space when walking, in order to move freely with each step.

the correct fit

Shoes have an impact on our natural movement. This is why it is important that they fit correctly whether youre standing or walking. With the tips listed below, we show you how to adjust your Birkenstock style for an optimal fit so you can enjoy its distinctive comfort.
1 Open all of the straps and step into the footbed. Be sure to leave several millimetres of room for your heels and toes; you will need this clearance for a natural rolling motion. Your feet need to be embedded in the footbed shape and not be on top of the edge neither on the inside or outside. Remember that our footbed is available in two widths (see page 6).
2 Close the straps comfortably around your feet. Leave enough room to allow your feet freedom of movement when you are walking.
3 On styles with back straps, do not tighten the back straps excessively because this will force your feet too far forward in the footbed.
4 After you have adjusted your Birkenstock model, take a few steps in them. If your feet can move freely when you are in motion and they do not hit the footbed edge, you have selected the correct size and width.

Our leathers are especially thick around 3 mm yet still soft. They are unsplit so they retain all of their valuable natural properties. We use deeply dyed, permeated leather in place of artificial surface dyes which keeps the leather airpermeable and breathable. Although all of the leather we use is natural, this catalogue differentiates between the different optical and surface features using the following categories.
1 Natural Leather Natural leather can be identified by its typical varying grain and colour scheme that can be seen on the surface. These differences are not covered, which maintains the characteristic of a naturally matte surface.
5 Nubuck Leather For nubuck leather the natural surface of the leather is buffed up, giving it a fine, velvet finish.
6 Birko-Flor Nubuck A special finishing process gives this material a surface that

Madrid is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Using natures specifications as a standard for supporting and maintaining the natural functions of the foot, is the Birkenstock philosophy that was already being implemented when the company produced its first flexible footbed inserts in 1896. Ongoing advanced development and increasing demand for the innovative products meant that the Blue Footbed was already being manufactured in significant quantities by 1925. In 1963, the family company combined the renowned footbed with a sandal for the first time the birth of the Madrid fitness sandal and paved the way for the brands success today.

With the flexible Blue Footbed you can also enjoy the unique Birkenstock comfort in many different shoes. As many people with the same shoe size often have toes of different lengths the flexible Blue Footbed has a length. In this way optimum fit is ensured without the length of the forefoot and the shape of the point of the shoe having to be taken into account. The shoe size can thus deviate from the size of the footbed. Careful fitting is therefore very important.
Very thin and flexible edges create a high level of comfort and mould to fit any shoe shape.
The hollow for the heel envelops the foot in its natural shape, supports the heel and provides good shock absorption.
The arching under the balls, the longitudinal arch support as well as the side supports relieve the foot and guide it back into its natural shape.

1932 Carl Birkenstock starts the Birkenstock training courses, which went on to become famous. In the following years he trained more than 5,000 specialists during his oneweek foot service courses. Leading physicians support the courses and the Carl Birkenstock System.
1935 First edition of Carl Birkenstocks book Mit dem Arzt 1774 Johann Adam Birkenstock is entered in the church ar chives in the city of Langen-Bergheim in Hesse as a shoe maker and subject. gegen Fukrankheiten und Irrlehren (A doctors guide to footcare and heresy) was published. It is 83 pages long and has 87 illustrations. 15,000 copies were printed and for sale on the market.
1947 The textbook Fussorthopdie System Carl Birkenstock (Podiatry Carl Birkenstocks System) was published, 14,000 copies were printed. Encompassing 112 pages, with 55 illustrations, Carl Birkenstock shared his guide to Naturgewollten Gehen [The natural way to walk], the socalled step-sensory system and healthy footwear. It became the best-selling textbook on podiatry of its day.
1896 Master shoemaker Konrad Birkenstock, who managed two speciality shoe stores in Frankfurt began production and sales of the flexible footbed insoles.
1899 For the next 15 years, Konrad Birkenstock held lectures in front of leading masters and guilds to explain his idea of a mass shoe made completely of plastic and to sign license agreements for the manufacturing of his shoe with a footbed. To this end, he travelled through Germany and Austria.
1925 A large factory with extensive grounds was built and ex panded in Friedberg in Hesse. The growing customer base requires a considerable daily production that is realized by having both a day shift and a night shift. The "Blue Footbed" is added to the production program.

We care about the environment. Actively protecting the environment and sparing use of nature has always been an important concern for Birkenstock. With environmentally friendly manufacturing, ongoing optimisation of technology and a well-thought-out recycling system the old-established company is actively contributing to preserving the environment for future generations.
We only use natural and sustainable materials such as cork, latex and jute for the Birkenstock footbed.
Birkenstock was one of the first manufacturers in the world to use almost exclusively water soluble and solventfree adhesives in its manufacturing. The proportion of these environmentally friendly components has been continuously increased in the last few years and today accounts for 95% of the adhesives used.
Innovative techniques, permanent operational enhancements and continuous process optimization have enabled Birkenstock to reduce energy consumption by more than 90 percent in recent years.
Any EVA punching scraps left after producing soles are shredded and used for playgrounds or sports grounds or for noise barriers on the motorway.
All components of the Birkenstock styles, from the buckle to the sole, can be individually replaced or repaired. This type of intelligent recycling not only saves customers money by not having to buy a new pair but also helps the environment and prevents shoes from ending up in landfills.
The family company uses remaining leather to create accessories such as key fobs.
By keeping the production site in Germany, Birkenstock is able to ensure that all of the valid environmental guide lines, which are some of the strictest in the world, are met.

The heart of every Birkenstock style is the footbed produced with natural, renewable raw materials. For example, we use cork harvested from the bark of the cork oak. Cork has impressive properties: it is lightweight, insulates from both heat and cold, has an anti-bacterial function, absorbs moisture, is highly elastic and cushions extremely well. This makes cork the perfect material for the Birkenstock footbed. In a multi-step process that is subject to careful control, the latex milk extracted from the bark of the rubber tree is transformed into the binding agent that holds the cork granulate in Birkenstock footbeds together. Due to its high elasticity and tensile strength, this latex makes the footbed permanently elastic and extremely durable. Jute, a vegetable fibre, has to be retted, stripped, combed, cleaned and spun before it can be woven into the moisture-absorbent fabric that stabilises our footbed.
High-quality leather We only use selected, high-quality cowhide with a thickness of 2.8 to 3 mm for our products. This quality is very rare and is only used by a handful of shoe manufacturers worldwide. Our leathers have a distinctive grain and colour pattern on the surface. Because we do not even reveal these variations, the individual character of every natural leather surface becomes a Birkenstock design element. We dye our leather and do not coat it with paint. This means it retains all of its valuable, natural properties such as breathability, durability and wear resistance. After continuous wear, you will observe surfaces changes such as a fine patina, folds and wrinkles. This is because the leathers colour nuances depend on the strain you place on your Birkenstock style. These features are not signs of poor quality; they are the mark of an authentic natural product and give every Birkenstock style a distinctive, natural character.
Buckles All of our buckles are corrosion-resistant and enamelled in several layers. This means they are resistant to strain for years. To improve the connection between the buckles and the uppers, we attach our large buckles at four points. They are carefully attached to the uppers: the clips are bent inward like a pretzel so they never come into contact with your feet.
Soles The outer soles are particularly important to us. The are made of EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) and feature outstanding abrasion resistance and excellent cushioning capability. This keeps them from being worn down on one side only and prevents problems with your posture.

Care instructions
Sandals and clogs need care. With the right treatment you will ensure a perfect-looking appearance. For upper materials you should distinguish between the individual types of leather as well as Birko-Flor.

2 Easy care for Birko-Flor. To clean Birko-Flor models you only need a damp cloth. With this you can easily wipe the upper material. 5 Removing dust and dirt. You can also use the care brush for your suede styles. Dust and dirt can be easily removed with the fine rubber brush. 3 Regularly clean the insole cover. So that you have a high degree of comfort when wearing our styles the insole cover is made of suede. To keep the leather soft you should treat the insole cover regularly with the nylon/brass brush. 6 Just rub scratches off. With our natural leather you can remove slight scratches by gently rubbing them with the palm of your hand.

Fast and efficient. So that you can enjoy your favourite Birkenstock sandals and clogs for a long time, all of the components can be repaired or replaced, whether the soles, straps, buckles or footbed. Our repair service can also take care of minor damages e.g., in the heel. It is certainly worth your while repairing styles made from high-quality and durable leather.
Just ask a specialized dealer about the Birkenstock repair service! Dealers generally have the original Birkenstock supplies and can quickly repair your sandals and clogs. Many international dealers offer repair services in their shops as well.
Buckles If one of the buckles on your style comes loose, our repair service can easily reattach or repair it for you.

Our feet are the basis for a healthy posture. As with the flexible Birkenstock footbed our feet are trained with every step: the toe grip stimulates a grasp reflex in which the toe and calf muscles are tensed. Then the muscles relax again. Thus when walking feet and legs are trained by the continual switch from muscle tensing and relaxing and blood flow is promoted. In addition the connective tissue is firmed and the sole of the foot reinforced as a shock absorber. All this ensures a natural, correct state of the foot, improves the stance of the whole body and thus in the end leads to an improved feeling of well-being.
