Letter From The President

It was about eighteen months ago that several members, past President Kathryn Barrett and I were in State College, where Kathryn accepted an Alumni Association award on behalf of the Chapter. It was a night of great celebration of our Chapters accomplishments of the previous year. The next day found Happy Valley blanketed in snow. An excellent football game followed, culminating with the celebration of Coach Paternos 409th win. It was the perfect weekend in Happy Valley. Two days later, that all changed.

There have been indictments, firings, and trials. There have been unprecedented sanctions, fines, and punishments. News cycles lasted hours and then months. As alumni and friends of Penn State, many were wondering what else could possibly go wrong. When would all of this end? It was with this backdrop that I was elected as your chapter president. I wondered if I would be up to the task with such a strong- and many times negative- spotlight upon Penn State. The reality is we will never be the same. We have had to settle for some amount of the new normal- some good days, some bad days. Continued on Page 4 Continued on Page Annual Meeting 4

2012 Annual Meeting and Spring Fling

We gathered at The Chamberlin at Fort Monroe last March for an elegant evening that included drinks and dinner, a program, election of officers, dancing and a speaker who scored big with his talk on Turning Hurdles into Stepping Stones. Guest speaker was Keith Goganious, 91, Hampton Universitys Defensive Coordinator. Keith, a football standout at Green Run High School in Virginia Beach, was a PSU linebacker and NFL athlete who played for the Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens. He explained how he uses the lessons he learned from Coach Joe Paterno with his student athletes today. We dined, danced and toasted Penn State and JoePa! thevibes!

Im in it to win it!, exclaimed longtime Chapter member Regina Oswalt. She suggested Regina suggested it was time to freshen up our entry into the Homecoming Parade. She had ideas. She had enthusiasm. Most of all she had spirit that was contagious.

Regina presented her ideas to the board and everyone was immediately on board to retire our beloved surfing lion and become pirates. We ARRRR Penn State was born. When our parade of pirates swashbuckled down College Ave., what were the judges to do? They awarded our chapter BEST out-of-state chapter entry and a $500 prize. When Regina has an idea you might want to listen because when 2 shes involved, she is in it to win it!

By Allie Allen, Child Abuse Prevention Committee Chairman The board voted to form a Child Abuse Prevention Committee to remain committed to attacking child abuse in Hampton Roads. A $525 contribution collected from members was used to conduct Darkness to Light Child Abuse Prevention trainings in the region. Subsequently the chapter was featured in the Virginia Pilots Beacon section as well as Inside Business, a weekly publication.

However, we remain Penn State proud of the good that will come of this terrible situation. Within weeks of the scandal breaking, our chapter formed a relationship with Prevent Child Abuse Hampton Roads. In the end, We Are

Our chapter continues its mission of connecting alumni to each other, to the University and to our local Penn State students. We have a dedicated board of directors and are always looking for new ideas or events to capture the interests of our diverse members. While we support student athletes throughout the year, we are more than just a bunch of old folks getting together to tailgate! We continue to have an endowed chapter scholarship to support local students in their quest for a Penn State education. We have a strong alumni admissions team, participating in local high school fairs and our yearly student sendoff. We give back to our community by volunteering at our local food banks. In short, its a great group of passionate people with whom to connect. The fact that they are fellow Penn Staters makes it even better.

Presidents letter

The reputation of the university was built on the hundreds of thousands of quality alumni. Whether you are new to the area, or have been here for many years, I invite you to connect with your PSU Hampton Roads community. If you are currently an active member, I would like to personally thank you and all of my fellow Board members for your hard work and dedication to this Chapter. For the Glory,

Student Sendoff Picnic

About 100 members, students and their familes attended our annual sendoff picnic at Ft. Monroe, Hampton. Nine freshmen and several upperclassmen attended and went home with new found connections made between themselves and alumni and a welcome bucket custom made by Alumni Admission chairman Laura Kapsha ( see right). While we love the location, changes at Ft. Monroe have us searching for a new location for future sendoffs. Ideas? Contact Event Chair Gary Herbert at

Student Care Packages

Each year, an average 50-60 freshmen from Hampton Roads enroll at a Penn State campus. That figure doesnt include World Campus students- those who are studying from home or from a local military base online- or transfer students. For those far from home, Hampton Roads alumni send a care package to supplement study snacks during finals week for spring and fall semesters. As past president and former WVECTV health news anchor Kathryn Barrett, 79, says, We send boxes full of the best sugar and sodium for finals! Actually, Care Packages Chairman Becky Burley is adding granola bars, healthier options and some non-food goodies!

Student Care Packages

Arion Harris, 14, poses with her fall semester care package at PSU Berks campus Every now and then, chapter leaders revisit the idea of whether to update our tradition of sending care packages. Is there a better gift? Should we, frankly, spend less on postage? We brainstorm a myriad of gift possibilities and we keep coming back to the little brown box. On December 12, 2012, Chemical Engineering major Arion Harris wrote on our facebook page, Received my finals week goodies box. Soooo excited! In an email she wrote, Thanks again to the Alumni for the wonderful package. Harris, from Hampton, is vice president of the Society of Women Engineers, the Blue and White Society treasurer and an Orientation Leader. Thanks, Arion! Guess well stick with the tried and true brown boxes!

Thank you Roger Browns! Next Student Care Package event: Saturday, April 20, 2013 11 AM at Roger Browns Restaurant, Portsmouth

Community Service

By Rich Freet, Community Service Chairman

Community Service

Our chapters activities involve community service in Hampton Roads. In 2012, we kept with a tradition of the past few years fighting hunger by volunteering at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. Richard Freet said, A key element in our chapter having sustained Group of Distinction status for the past several years is because we have directed that unmatched Penn State spirit and energy toward performing

Mayflower Marathon

outreach services for our community. In June about two dozen members worked in the warehouse, filling brown bags for the Foodbanks mobile pantry. In November, we tried something new. We volunteered at the Mayflower Marathon. At Peninsula Town Center, we weighed, sorted, Next and stored over 2,000 pounds of Community food during our two-hour shift. Service That is what the Penn State tradition is all about- making a Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia positive impact on your community, said Becky Burley, who organized our chapters part in the Peninsula event. Penn State- UVA Game

When we learned that the Nittany Lions would play U-VA in Charlottesville, we began to plan a road trip. Andrew Ronemus was the contact with the Central Va. Chapter. Donna Bell organized a bus trip. Between the lottery tickets we won through the alumni lottery plus tickets acquired by other means, the 757 was well represented. Alumni enjoyed the chapter mixer and the Alumni Association pep rally. To read the Virginian Pilot article on our chapters trip to U-VA, click here.
