1 Supersonic moving pressure on top of an elastic half space

Read Section 9 on Elastic waves due to a traveling load on the ground surface, up to the end of 9.2 Solve the problem by the method of charcteristics by assuming = (x + 1 y), H = H(x + 2 y) Find the explicit expressions of and H in terms of the applied pressure P. Check the results on stress components in 9.2 and work out the missing detail of yy .

2 Shallow-water ow past a slender ship

In a stationary frame of reference, the linearizied equations governing long waves in shallow water of constant depth h are: + h u = 0 t and u = g t (H.2.2) (H.2.1)

A slender ship moves at the constant speed U in the negative x direction. Transform to the moving coordinate system so that the ship is stationary and there is a current of velocity U along the positve x direction. Show that in the ship-bound coordinates, the velocity disturbance due to the ship is governed by

U2 1 xx + yy = 0 gh

(H.2.3)

for the velocity disturbance potential u = . 1

Let the ship be modelled by a vertical strut (bridge-pier) whose hull is

y = Y (x) = show that the no-ux condition leads to = U+ y x Linearize it for a slender ship. Solve the potential for a supercritical ow where U > picture. Find the hydrodynamic pressure and show that the wave resistance is R= 2 2 U 1 gh U 2 h
