Students Gain RealLife Experience

I couldnt have asked for a better internship for summer 2012. I was blessed with being the Mar keting and Public Relations intern for Mackinac State Historic Parks. I lived and worked on Macki nac Island with wonderful people who taught me more than I could have asked for. Going into the internship, I didnt know much about marketing or public relations. However, as the time went by my responsibilities grew, and I continued to learn more and more about each )2$1(&$0&%#+5 My responsibilities ranged from a variety of things including drafting and pitching press releases, #&+-6"-"6$7)+1&'+8$94&'+$!"#$'&#&&.!/%&$,):7)"+8$7').)1-)"!%$7()1)6'!7(48$!"#$+1'!1&6-,$ marketing development with an emphasis on digital communications. I was also responsible for creating the content and layout of a biweekly newsletter, The Current, which was distributed to 160 employees. I had a number of memories that could compete for my favorite moment from my internship; however, I would have to say my number one favorite moment would be from my last day of work. ;!,($.)'"-"6$/&2)'&$<)'1$=!,>-"!,$*):%#$)7&"$1)$1(&$7:/%-,8$1(&$/-6$,!"")"$*):%#$/&$0'&#$ /4$!$(-+1)'-,$-"1&'7'&1&'5$=-":1&+$/&2)'&$1(&$,!"")"$*!+$1)$/&$0'&#$2)'$)7&"-"6$1(!1$#!48$.4$ supervisor asked if I wanted to be the one to set it off. This past summer, I had the pleasure of work ing at two internships. I spent the majority of my time working for Ferris State in the Infor mation Technology Services department and the remaining time at Womens Information Service, Inc. in Big Rapids. These opportuni ties offered a great contrast in work environ ments and made each week an interesting experience. But even better, these internships gave me a good reason to quit my previous job of working at the local pawnshop. More particularly for my Ferris internship, I

worked as an assistant to the Information Technology Services Man ager. When people ask what I did at work my answer is Everything but anchor sports. During my late nights at FOX I learned how to do everything a sports anchor does: shoot sporting events, conduct interviews, put highlights together, write scripts for the broadcast, write web stories, and do re search. I learned there is more to working in a sports department than watching sports. I was mentored on how to be a good anchor/reporter learning how to do standups, anchor and approach situations. The long days never slowed down and work always needed to be done. Though it was a lot of work, I had a blast and made FOX my second home. I was blessed to work with great people, and even had the chance to work with my sports anchoring inspiration, Tim Doty. I have too many favorite memories to count but there are three that stick out. On May 31, Jason and I were assigned to attend Nick Lidstroms retirement at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. The mag nitude and emotion of the announcement will forever be with me as the captain said goodbye. One of the coolest things I did was personally interview NASCAR stars Kyle Busch and Travis Pas trana for the 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. sports broadcast before a local race at Berlin Raceway. They both were friendly and fun to talk to. The best memory that comes to mind is the two times I was sent to cover the NASCAR Sprint Cup Races at MIS. I had all media access and relished every second.

After all of the groups performed the judges voted to choose a winner. Additionally, there was a peoples choice award, which consisted of a representative from each group by collecting money from audience members. Audience members put their money into the bucket for the group they liked the most and all proceeds went to United Way. Contd on page 6

Despite the constant downpour of rain, students, alumni and community members came to watch the parade, the football game and the crowning of the 2012 Ferris King and Queen. This years King is Byron Williams, a senior in public relations and this years queen is Avery Lar son, also a senior in public relations. Both the King and Queen were all smiles although they spent a day in the rain. This years Homecoming proved that although the weather was gloomy, Ferris pride was not.

Students Around the State

The Technical & Professional Communication (TPC) program has attracted several students from Southwestern Michigan College in Dowa giac, Michigan. Southwestern Michigan College now offers students a TPC degree, along with several other bachelors degree options through Ferris State University, without having to leave the Dowagiac area. In fact, many of the courses required for the pro gram are offered as online and hybrid classes, 6-3-"6$1(&$+1:#&"1+$&3&"$.)'&$9&J-/-%-14$)2$()*$ often they need to visit Southwestern Michigan Colleges campus. A variety of mixeddelivery classes were designed to integrate students from both campuses using online meeting sites. This allows students to gain real experience of using technology to coordinate business meet ings and projects. They form teams comprised of members from two or more geographic areas, and are able to coordinate with each other to design, write, edit, and complete proj ects such as this TPC Newsletter. Courtney Livingston joined the TPC program because it combines writing and business. I joined the Technical and Professional Communication Program at Southwest ern Michigan College in Dowagiac in January of 2012. I received all of that with Fer ris program. I love that I can take SMC classes, at an SMC price, while gaining Ferris credit. The Ferris program at SMC allows me to save expenses by living at home and commuting to school just a couple days a week. It also gives me a competitive edge in the job market, since I can add long distance commu nication as a skill on my resume. I was worried that online classes would /&$(!'#8$/:1$1(&$,%!++&+$!'&$)'6!"-C&#$ well so its easy to stay on track, and the instructors are very understanding, and are easy to work with.
