Science Fair for Young Children Guided Experiments EXPERIMENT: 8 Title of experiment Problem : : Frictional Force Does it take

more force to move an object over a smooth surface or rough one? Aim/ Objective : To predict the amount of force needed to move an Object on different type of surface. Hypothesis : The rougher the surface, the larger the frictional force involve. Apparatus : Small wooden block, sandpaper, 5 pieces of cardboard, 3 new pieces of sandpaper (fine, medium & coarse), tile, string, paper cup, marbles, glue stick, table and hole punch. Variables : Identify which variables are fixed/ manipulated/ responding variables. Procedures : 1. Glue one of each type of sandpaper and tile, to separate cardboard backing. Make sure they are glued smooth and level. Leave the last piece of cardboard smooth. 2. Punch three holes at the top of the paper cup. Thread strings through the holes and tie them to the wooden block. 3. Put the smooth cardboard piece on the edge of the table. Place the block on the cardboard. Now let the cup hang below the tables edge. 4. Start adding marbles on the cup. One at a time, counting as you go. Record the number of marbles when the block first begins to move. Also record how many marbles are necessary to move block the full length of the cardboard to the edge of the table.

Science Fair for Young Children Guided Experiments 5. Replace the smooth cardboard with a sandpapercovered board, and repeat steps 3 - 4. Keep testing until you have collected data for the blocks movement on all the boards. Records / Data collecting Types of surface : Example:Number of marbles Total weights/force(N) Inference
