Name: Dana Andreeva How can your environments impact who you are and the choices you

make? Pick one of the following scenes from the play. Think about how the situation affected the Monster. Think about how if the scene unfolded differently, the Monster may have changed. Rewrite one of the following to show how they would have impacted the Monster and his choices in life if the situation had been different. 1. 2. 3. 4. When Frankenstein sees the monster for the first time and his reaction is to run away When the monster is in a town, where dogs and towns people are after him When Felix shoots the monster When the monster kills William

Rewriting Frankenstein

Your scene should have between 2-4 characters. 1 or 2 of these characters may be your own characters (not from the play). Your scene will have two parts: 1. What happens to the monster (the situation) 2. His choices as a result (the impact) Which scene will you rewrite? What is the situation in the scene? What do others do to the Monster? I am going to rewrite scene number 4. In this scene the Monster tries to be friends with a little boy and when finding out he is Frankensteins brother he kills him. The little boy is insulting him and threatening the Monster.

How does this affect the Monster? What impact does it have on his life? What choices does he make as a result? This affects the Monster because after this he loses all hope on finding someone who understands him and starts only thinking of revenge. This impacts him greatly because he starts becoming what other people think he is a monster. He kills William and then asks Frankenstein to make him a bride. When Frankenstein does not succeed he kills Elizabeth and finally a monster. He hates Frankenstein and ends his life shortly after seeing Frankenstein take his last breath. How will this affect the Monster? What impact will it have on his life? What choices will he make as a result? The Monster will understand his creator meaning he goes back to his belief that he is better than humans therefor he acts the part. The impact is that the Monster wont hurt and kill anyone else and will never turn into a monster. Frankenstein had succeeded he had made an angel maybe not on the outside but on the inside. He will make the choice to end his life being what he was meant to be good.

How will you change the situation? How might things happen differently during the scene? When I rewrite this scene I am going to change the situation by Frankenstein being there when the Monster is about to kill William. The Monster will drop the boy and focus on Frankenstein, the Monster and his creator will finally understand each other.(Frankenstein convinces the Monster is better than them) Frankenstein will apologies for causing him pain and the Monster still believes that humans are killers and says that even though he hates Frankenstein with every bit of his soul he isnt human. He walks away and Frankenstein asks where hell go and he says the same thing he says to Captain Walton in the Epilogue. At the end comes an older Frankenstein is on a boat with Captain Walton and they are on a boat. The Captain asks why he wants to be here and Frankenstein says he has come to say to an

Name: Dana Andreeva

A Note on Staging Explanation In Part 1 I chose the setting for the scene to be by a lake because in that scene William was playing there. The lighting is bright because its set in the sunny afternoon a nd there is a birdsong because this is all happening outside. In Part 2 I chose the setting of a boat deck because Captain Walton and Frankenstein are going to the Artic. Frankenstein is going to the Artic to see the Monster one last time. There is dim lighting because the Artic is furthest from the sun therefor there is little light. There are waves crashing because Frankenstein and Captain Walton are on a boat. At the end the waves stop and there is a spotlight on Frankenstein because this is the end and Frankenstein is reading the letter.

Part 1 William is playing by the lake with several toys; there is bright lighting and a birdsong in the background. The toys resemble airplanes, he runs around with them as if they are flying. The Monster is coming from the right side of the stage he sees the child and starts smiling and slowly approaches the boy. Monster: (murmurs, loud enough for audience to hear not William) Oh, what an innocent little creature with no hatred in his heart. I could take him with me to the wilderness and bring it up as my friend. We shall love everyone and live in peace with all the creatures. William has his back turned on the Monster; the Monster slowly takes his last step being right behind him and gently puts his arm on Williams shoulder. Monster: (sweetly and softly says) Come with me little one. William turns his head sees the Monster and screams. Monster: I shant hurt you but you must come with me. William: (screams) Unhand me you beast, I shall tell my brother, Herr Frankenstein! He will punish you, you ugly Monster! The Monster takes his hand off Williams shoulder with an angry face. He seizes William by collar and starts strangling him. William is kicking and screaming. Frankenstein runs onto the stage, the Monster sees him and in shock drops William. William runs to his brother who embraces him. Frankenstein: (his voice filled with panic) William are you hurt, you poor, poor child. Run back to Elizabeth to tell her youre okay and I will come later. William looks ready to argue with his mouth open but Frankenstein stares at him sternly and William runs off stage. Frankenstein: (his voice filled with hatred) You Demon, Monster! You vile thing, you could have killed my brother! You were ready to kill him! I didnt make you like this even though you do not resemble an angel you were intended to be one on the inside. But being ready to kill an innocent that is a betrayal. Monster: (screams) I-betray you? If I could laugh Frankenstein, Id shake the house with scorn. You are the betrayer-you created me, and you made sure I could never be happy. Isnt that betrayal?

Name: Dana Andreeva

Frankenstein: ( calmly) I did make you and terrified that I made a monster I ran away. You have every reason to hurt me and want my end but dragging in innocent lives is not the solution. Monster: (screams) You made me and as soon as you were done you turned away in horror and left me to face the world all alone! I was a creature everyone turned from disgust and loathing into a vision of a nightmare. Do you know the cruelest thing of all? It was that I wanted to love. I came to life full of goodwill and friendship for every living creature but they all turned on me. Frankenstein: (screams) Goodwill! You tried to kill my brother! How is that goodwill? Monster: (yells) Did you create me to be evil? Did you intend me to be cursed and hated by all mankind? Did you create me to be good- to be like human beings but stringer, nobler, kinder- to be an image of what humanity might be? Frankenstein: (yells) I never intended for you to be evil or hated by mankind. What I intended you to be was an image of what humanity should be. Monster: (screams) Lies, you intended all this misery and pain! Frankenstein there is no man crueler then you, you deserve to die! For this is humanity in a nutshell all mankind are killers, murderers. The Monster takes Frankenstein by the collar and starts to strangle him. Frankenstein tries to squeeze the Monsters hand off him and is kicking. Frankenstein kicks the Monster and the Monster drops Frankenstein his face filled with anger. Frankenstein: (calmly) You have a right to hate me but taking this out on humanity is not right. You are right that I was cruel to you and I am sorry for my mistakes but you have only glanced at humanity from the outside. From the outside the world is cruel and harsh but inside its warm and beautiful. The pain you have experienced, the joys of new life, love, hate, anger, and all your emotions prove you are human. Our past, our mistakes they make us who we are but how we act upon them is our own doing. I know you have been met by hate but that is only because we fear what we cant explain, what we cant understand. You want my death, then that is your choice but give humanity another shot. Dont shut life away because life is one of the most amazing things since it is made out of beauty and horror. I was ashamed that I hadnt created an angel, a life but now I see that I have created something as beautiful and horrible as life itself. Monster: (calmly) You are right, life is made out of horror and beauty and is truly astounding. I think I know understand you my creator, you are not cruel but mistaken and the world is not cruel but mistaken. Congratulations Frankenstein you have created life and you have made it nobler, kinder, and stronger. I will give humanity another chance maybe I was mistaken. Frankenstein steps towards the Monster and put his hand on his shoulder the Monster flinches under Frankensteins touch. Frankenstein: (whispers) Do you want to come home with me; I will show my family and friends not to fear you. You have a chance to start over a chance to have a family. Monster: (with a bit of fear in his voice) That is a generous offer Frankenstein but I- think- I will have to enter this world on my own. I will learn how to live and give humanity a chance.

Name: Dana Andreeva

The Monster starts walking away towards the end of the stage. Frankenstein: (loudly so the Monster can hear him) The offer still stands, you are always welcome so dont hesitate if something is going wrong to contact me. Promise me one thing no matter how they treat you dont let them change you. You are better than them stronger, kinder and nobler. The Monster turns around to face Frankenstein. Monster: (whispers) I promise Herr Frankenstein and dont worry I will write to you about my journeys. The Monster turns around and keeps walking away. Frankenstein: (yells) Where will you go after you understand humanity? The Monster turns around to face Frankenstein again and puts on a grave face. Monster: ( in a voice filled with pain) I shall go north until I can go no further, and make a fire. Then I shall lie down until my bones have turned into ash. They tell me that human beings have souls that live on when their bodies dies. I hope I have no soul because after the way I expect to be treated all I will want will be oblivion. The Monster walks off stage. Frankenstein paces around the lake. Frankenstein: (mumbling) The horror and beauty of life, how can something so beautiful be so horrible at the same time? How can something so horrible be so beautiful at the same time? Oh, life what a wonder you are! Frankenstein walks off stage. A boy with a sign that reads 10 years later walks on stage lets the audience read the sign and then walks off the other side. On a deck of a ship you can see sails and some simple stools. Dim lighting and the sound of waves crashing on the boat are heard. An older Frankenstein and Captain Walton are holding on to the railings. Captain Walton is holding a telescope and looking through it. He suddenly puts it down and turns his head to Frankenstein. Captain Walton: (curiously) So what brings you here to the end of the earth Herr Frankenstein? Frankenstein looks back at Captain Walton and freezes as if reliving memories. He smiles. Frankenstein: Im here to say goodbye to an old friend. Captain Walton looks at him confused and Frankenstein looks forward. He takes out a letter from a pocket in his furry coat. The stage blacks out and there is a spotlight on Frankenstein. The sound of crashing waves stop. Then letter starts being read in the Monsters voice. But the Monster isnt actually there.

Name: Dana Andreeva

Monster: Dear Frankenstein, ten years ago you created a life and ten years ago that life changed for the better. Do you remember our conversation by the lake? Because I do and I have relived the conversation for the past ten years. As you suggested I gave life another chance and I saw much. I saw the beauty of a mothers love, friendship and countless first loves. Ten years ago I would have thought impossible that there would be beauty in life but my dear friend there are countless beauties in life. In our past letters you have told me of your own family, your own beauty. Your little boy who you named William after your brothers sudden death. Now Frankenstein that is the horror in life. Some four years ago I tried to fit into society but they hurt me as they did ten years ago. In the past decade I tried to find something filled with horror and beauty at the same time but I couldnt. This will be my last letter to you since I have finished my journey. However now when I end my life I hope I do have a soul so a small part of me can live on. You have told me of your illness and that you only have a year to spare but that by friend is the horror in life. Spend your last moments with your little boy teach him to love like you taught me. Though before we depart this world I would like to share one last conversation with you my friend. You will find me at the end of the earth. The spotlight gets dimmer and dimmer until the whole stage is blacked out.
