Four wheelers are now beginning to edge two wheelers out at the hustings. In 2004-05, the country sold slightly over a million passenger cars, while in the following year sales closed at 1.14 million units. Indias auto sales are likely to remain strong for quite some time to come. Indian players like Tata Motors, M & M along with companies like say Mercedes Benz, which occupied only the top segments. The fight is essentially between the asian giants and the American ones. Maruti Suzuki had one of the most spectacular launches in the history of Indian auto that of Swift. Tata Motors and M & M have demonstrated abilities to design and engineer cars out of India. That explains why Tata Motors climbed from rank 3rd to Top spot and M & M from rank 6th to rank 2nd, dislodging Hyundai Motors.
