    DEFINITION

    News is information about a break from the normal flow of events, in interruption in the expected, a deviation from the norm.

    Timeliness: Events that are immediate, recent. Impact: Events that are likely to affect many people. Prominence: Events involving well-known people or institutions. Proximity: Events that are geographically or emotionally close to people.

    5. Conflict: Strife, antagonism, warfare have provided the basis stories. 6. The Unusual: Events that deviate sharply from the expected. 7. Currency: Occasionally, a situation long simmering will suddenly emerge as the subject of discussion and attention. 8. Necessity: something that necessary for public.

    WHAT ELEMENTS OF NEWS VALUES?

    BASIC COMPONENTS OF NEWS


    COMPLETE: The story contains the specifics that illustrate, prove and document the main point of the story. 5W+H Who. Who are the important people to the story? Is everyone included so that the story can be accurately and adequately told? Is everyone properly identified? What. What is the major action or event of the story? When. When did the event occur? Yesterday? Two years ago?

    Where. Where did the event occur? South Tangerang, Banten? Tambora, West Jakarta? Paris? Why and How. The reader expects explanations about events. If the story is about something bizarre or unusual, the writer should offer some explanations so that the questions that event raises in the readers mind are answered.

    IMPORTANT THINGS IN NEWS


    ACCURACY. All information is verified before it used. Direct observation is the surest way to obtain accurate information. Check and recheck again to avoid mistakes: misspellings, address, etc. Corrections. When mistakes are made, corrections follow so the record is accurate. Language. Accuracy also applies to the use of language. Precision, especially for direct quotes.

    BALANCE AND FAIR. All sides in a controversy are presented. Cover both sides/all sides. Balance is a moral commitment and cannot be measured. Fairness in describing story, sources, avoid bias.

    OBJECTIVE. The writer does not inject his or her feelings or opinions. Describing facts, not feelings, such as ambitious politician, and so on.
