By Water
Many Lake area visitors and residents prefer to visit their favorite restaurants and nightclubs by boat. With more than 40 establishments on or overlooking the water, there are plenty from which to choose! The 92-mile main channel of the Lake is also known as the Osage Arm, since the Lake was created by damming the Osage River. There are four arms that branch o the main channel: the Gravois Arm, Grand Glaize Arm, Little Niangua Arm and Big Niangua Arm. On the maps in this guide, youll notice a series of numbers printed along the waterways. These numbers represent Lake mile markers, abbreviated MM or mm, and are used to communicate a location with Lake access. For example, Public Beach #1 at Lake of the Ozarks State Park is at the 12MM on the Grand Glaize Arm. MM (or mm) without an arm designation refers to a main channel location.
By Land
The main thoroughfares in the Lake of the Ozarks area are US Highway 54, State Highway 5 and State Highway 52. US Highway 54 and State Highway 5 intersect at Camdenton. US Highway 54 serves the East, North and portions of the South areas of the Lake. Highway 5 serves the West area and parts of the South. Highway 52 connects US Highway 54 to State Highway 5, providing access to the northernmost areas of the Lake. In general, most destinations can be reached from these three roads. Please note, the new 54 expressway project is now complete. The old section of Hwy 54 has been designated as Osage Beach Parkway and has limited access to Hwy 54. Bagnell Dam Boulevard provides access to Bagnell Dam, HH/ Horseshoe Bend Parkway and the Community Bridge; US Highway 54 bypasses those areas. The Community Bridge, a toll bridge, connects Horseshoe Bend with Shawnee Bend and ultimately Highway 5 on the west side of the Lake.
Free maps are available throughout the Lake area. However, a highly detailed, 28 x 40 oicial map is available through the Lake of the Ozarks Convention & Visitor Bureau for $5.95. To order, please send your mailing address and a check payable to: Lake of the Ozarks CVB, PO Box 1498, Osage Beach, MO 65065.

Caves
Caves are fragile ecosystems and extreme care must be taken when exploring wild caves. For your safety and the safety of the environment, we recommend that amateur cavers stick to show caves, which are wild caves that have been tamed through tremendous work and expense. Paved walkways, bridges and hand rails have been constructed and lights have been installed for the convenience of viewing natures underground beauty with little eort and very safely. No special clothing or equipment is necessary. The Lake is blessed with four such caves within 30 miles of each other. Sailing at the Lake
Toss your cares to the wind. Sailing, one of the most exhilarating sports, combines physical exercise, the science of aero- and hydro-dynamics, and the strategies of chess into hours of thrill and serenity, depending on the wind and weather at the moment. From Bagnell Dam to the 8-mile marker is some of the best wind for sailing in open water, surrounded by a beautiful shoreline. But in no way is this the only area for sailing. You can easily spend a week sailing over a hundred miles of Lake, arms and coves, enjoying restaurants and the architectural variety of homes along the way.
Marinas like Ozark Yacht Club oer sailing schools for both adults and children. In summer they run week-long youth programs, perfect for kids to become accomplished sailors while learning the essentials of water safety and aero dynamics. Once certied, you may charter sailboats in the Caribbean and use any of the OYCs eet boats, ranging from 9-ft Open Bics for the kids, to 40- racer/cruisers for the whole family.
Lake of the Ozarks is a premier venue for water recreation, so it should be no surprise that it is home to some of the most challenging sailing in the Midwest. Still one of the best kept secrets on the Lake is the community of sailors who gather on Saturdays in the spring and fall to challenge each other on a typical 3-mile triangle race course. The Ozark Sailing Club, one of the oldest clubs on the Lake, was founded in 1983 and, with the help of Ozark Yacht Club, is bringing sailing to the forefront of activity on the Lake.
Each year in October, the Lake of the Ozarks hosts sailors from all over the Midwest to compete for the Ozark Cup. Sponsored by Ozark Yacht Club, this event is the pinnacle of the sailing season and a great spectator sport for power boaters. Said one who watched a race from the foredeck of his 42-ft Searay: I dont have a clue how it works, but it was fun watching them jockey for the best starting positions and then heeling way over at full speed just a few feet apart. During one such duel, a passing boat oered to toss a beer to a competitor, but I think he was just rubbing it in. Go sailing at the Lake of the Ozarks and toss your cares to the wind!

The Lake has seen a renaissance in craft wineries over the last decade. Scenic beauty paired with fine wine and gourmet food make for a memorable experience regardless of the season. Touring the Lake of the Ozarks Wine trail is a fun way to spend an afternoon, day or even an entire weekend. Missouri is known for its rich heritage as a wine producing state. The area became known as Missouri Rhineland referring to its similarities to that region in Germany and the influence of the German immigrants on the industry in the 1800s. In the mid-1880s, more wine was produced by volume in Missouri than in any other state. Due to prohibition and the growth of the California wine industry, Missouri wineries today tend to be small and more focused on crafting their wine in the old world traditions. The wine throughout the state is among the best in the world and because scarcity, its also one of the best kept secrets. Missouris wine industry has grown into an attraction in its own right and complements an already thriving tourism industry.
