Children Have Ability to Learn Adults Don’t”

As children, do we have a natural ability and motivation to take up new interests

(such as language, sports, and musical instruments) who as adults we seem to lose?
Are there too many social pressures on adults or are there other reasons for the
apparent decline in a human being’s capacity to learn?

While I agree that children have a natural ability to learn fast and they have
varied interests with high motivation, I am not convinced that adults don’t have
the said ability and motivation.

Children have entire time at their disposal for learning. Also they have high
motivation compared to adults for learning new things and developing into the
fields of music, sports, games etc. I am convinced that children's brains have a
natural ability to absorb the new things fast. This is as part of their
developmental growth; much of their achievement is because Schools motivate them
to take many subjects. Parents also motivate their children to practice new sports
or to learn music. Even their playmates force them to become better at computer
games. In a way children enjoy learning and their environment is also favorable
and highly motivating.

However the said motivation is little less in adults due to work pressure, social
obligations, and many more. Nevertheless adults do like to learn and develop
themselves to compete with others is also a proven fact. They can organize their
learning by setting times for reading or practice. They can build on skills and
experiences they know. Nevertheless exceptionally some people may feel that
further learning is pointless for them may be because whatever they wanted to
achieve in life they have achieved. Those are the adults with high sense of self
actualization and esteem. But for the younger adults to nurse the feelings that
they are too busy with families and work and they can’t learn any more is merely a
psychological barrier and have no roots in realism.

In conclusion we cannot generalize anything on learning abilities of children and

adults. It depends upon the motivation of the person and the environment.
