role of the setting in Lord of the Flies is that it becomes a new character, one that causes psychological unbalance in the other characters minds. These [palm trees] stood or leaned or reclined against the light and their green feathers were a hundred feet up in the air. This refers to the trees that are densely scattered around the island. The trees represent the personality of the island, with the trees being careen, it shows how the island tries to trick them because slanted objects symbolize lying and cheating. Looking at the dazzling beach and water. This is the entrance to the island, beautiful water, drawing the characters into it, where the plane just happened to crash. The island tricks the children with its wonderful luxuries, and then slowly tortures them with scary mysteries until they can no longer handle it. The tail-end part, where the rocks are all piled up. When Jack and Ralph go hunt for the beast they see the obstacle made of rocks blocking their path. The pile of rocks represent an obstacle that the island has created for the boys to change their ways of thinking, trying to separate the group apart by sending only one person to possibly die in the dark mysteries within the island. The island in Lord of the Flies is no ordinary island; it is a living piece of land.
