Draft #2: 1/13/2012 Letter on Gambling We the undersigned are leaders from many of Hawaiis faith traditions united

by our opposition to the introduction of gambling to our state. We emphatically oppose legalizing gambling on the basis of its proven tendency to undermine the bonds between family members and its corrosive effect on communities. Gambling especially targets the least among us. It is an undisputed fact that lower income people and the poor spend the largest percentage of their income in gambling facilities. It is therefore a hidden regressive tax, and worse a tax on the dreams of ordinary people. As stewards of Hawaiis religious institutions we believe the dreams offered by gambling are a mirage fueled by the desire to get something for nothing. At its worst this desire can strip families of their equity making impossible the very hopes that give the lottery, casino, or slot machine their power. Even at its best this dynamic undermines the values of thrift and hard work that are key elements of successful family life in Hawaii. In addition we see the economic model of gambling as predatory it promotes the gain of a very few at the expense of the many. Its hidden message is the promotion of greed a vice inherent in all people. The people of Hawaii have had this debate several times before when times were harder, and money tighter than it is today. Now energized by money from far off investors, and led by sophisticated lobbyists our state will have the debate again. We are not natural public figures but we cannot allow this to proceed unopposed and therefore we pray together for a swift and firm rejection of false promise of legalized gambling.
