Summary The passage speaks about how a sponsor can affect a persons literacy.

The author broke up her essay into four separate categories. Each describes in depth about how a sponsor can help a person. A sponsor is someone that pushes a person or motivates them to a goal. In this case it would be to read. In many cases sponsors can be influential and help guide a person to use institutions and materials. Brandt also uses different stories of people and their sponsors to show how a sponsor can truly help.

Analysis 1/11/13 Brandt speaks about sponsors using institutions as a sort of gateway to motivating a person. The sponsor is the person who helps the sponsored learn to accept aid from the materials around him/her. The examples she uses, such as the one about Dora help the reader understand that a sponsor can be anything or anyone. A persons parent can be a sponsor or an establishment. I had plenty of sponsors while I was learning to read, but the most influential sponsor to me was my reading and writing tutors. Without their guidance I would have not been able to overcome my dyslexia. I do believe that with the help of a sponsor even someone with limited opportunities can learn to read and write. Such as, Malcolm X who used Elijah Muhammad as a sponsor even though he was incarcerated.
