ITAT on the Hill: Last month ITAT had In the Works: Second Hand Smoking
the opportunity to visit the State Capital during the legislative session. We got to learn more about House bill 13 which prohibits a person from smoking in a motor vehicle if a child is a passenger in the vehicle. According to the Surgeon General, children are exposed to more second hand smoke than non-smoking adults. We are happy to hear that the bill has been passed!

1,100 Adults in Utah die per year. 26,000 Kids under 18 and alive in
Utah will ultimately die prematurely from smoking. 1,500 kids under 18 who become new daily smokers each year. 2.6 million cigarettes bought or smoked by kids each year. 345 million annual health care costs directly caused by smoking. 104 million costs covered by the state Medicaid program due to smoking. 34 Million Spent on marketing for tobacco in Utah each year.

Currently, ITAT groups from Salt Lake, Utah County, and Hurricane are competing against one another in a video ad contest that centers on the harmful effects of second hand smoking. The groups are having fun coming up with different ways to get this message across. Videos of the contest will be available on YouTube.
