Reasoning

Date: Tues. March 5, 2013 Grade Level: 7th Grade Course Title: Math 7 Lesson #: 10 of 10

Content Standards addressed by this lesson: 7.RP.1 Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units 7.RP.2 Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities 7.RP.3 Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them MP4 Model with mathematics MP7 Look for and make use of structure MP8 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning Inquiry Questions: What studying strategies am I going to use to prepare for tomorrows exam? What concepts do I need to focus my studying on? Evidence Outcomes: Every student will be able to: Communicate how they plan to study for tomorrows exam Express what concepts they are confident in and what concepts they find difficult Assessment of Evidence Outcomes: Students personal study plans Materials Needed: Study Plan for each student Jenga game Agenda for Board: Review Homework Review Game Jenga Make Study Plan Procedure: Review Homework (~15 minutes) Focus homework review on problems 1-4. Have student volunteers write their

proportions on the board. Ask students what these proportions have in common with one another? (They all use the same scale factor.) Ask students how these proportions would change if the scale factor were changed. Review Game (Jenga) Number off class into two teams and have teams separate into two areas of the classroom. Pair students with a partner on their team and assign these partners a number. Students will work with their partner throughout the review game. Write a review problem on the white board. Provide class with ample time to solve problem. Use the random number generator on a calculator to determine which pair of students to call on from the team that is up. If that pair of students answers correctly, they can pull a piece from the Jenga puzzle. If that pair answers incorrectly, then use the random number generator on a calculator to call on a pair of students from the other team. If they answer correctly, they can pull a piece from the Jenga puzzle. If the answer incorrectly, play bounces back to the original team that was up. So on and so forth until someone answers correctly. Work solution out on board and write the next problem up. Make sure to pause and ask students for questions. As students are working out problems, walk around room to observe their work. This will help you know what misconceptions to address when showing the solution on the board. Study Plan (~10 minutes) Pass out a study plan sheet to each student and fill out the top portion together. (Test Date, Sections to Study) Instruct students to fill out the rest of the plan on their own. Walk around to make sure that they write specific strategies down. Students will try to write that they understand everything and that they are confused about nothing. If they insist this is the case, ask them to write themselves little reminders that they may need to help themselves not make silly mistakes. (Check work, work slower, watch for negative signs, etc.) Dismiss students one at a time after reviewing their study plan.
