Childrenmakeup60%ofshelterresidents.Thisfactcreatesa greatdealofworkwithandaroundthem. Becauseoflimitedaccommodation,mostshelterscanaccept onlythreechildrenwiththeirmothers,thoughlargerfamilies areoccasionallytakenin.Oursheltershavenurseriesfor toddlers. Theshelters'residentsarewomenfromothertowns,but childrenattendlocalschoolsinthetownwheretheirshelteris located.Childrenwithspecialneeds,orthoserequiring remediallessons,poseaspecialproblemandtheirentryinto theeducationalsystemmaytakeseveralweeks.During vacationstheolderchildrenstaywiththeyoungerchildren. Problemsariseinournurseryowingtothefrequentturnoverof children,theiremotionalandphysicalconditionandthefact thattheyaretogetherwiththeirsiblings.Sometimesthe childrenarenotawareoftheirsurroundings.Anotherproblem stemsfromthenumberofdifferentlanguagesspokenby residents,whoincludenewimmigrantsandArabwomen.At theshelter,childrenencounterchildrenofadifferentcoloror appearancewhospeaklanguages,whichtheyarehearingfor thefirsttimeintheirlives.

Childrenarrivingattheshelterleavetheirhome,theirtoys, theirfriendsandeventheabusivefatherwithwhomtheyoften haveanambivalentrelationship.Theyhavetoadjusttoanew educationalframework.However,theyusuallyadaptquickly andfeelbetterinanenvironmentwhereneitherphysicalnor verbalviolenceispermitted. Parentingandnonviolentbehavioraredealtwith. Psychologistsworkwiththechildrenatourshelters.Children spendmanyhoursoncomputergames.Aspartoftheirschool "personalresponsibility"project,highschoolstudentswork withthechildrenandvolunteershelpwithhomeworkandgive Shiatsutreatmentstobothmothersandchildren.
