SP O R T S CORNER
Annual Sports Day 2013 Annual Sports Day was conducted on March 17 at our club. We had enthusiastic participation from members, spouses, wards and club staff. The afternoon started with male staff playing popular games like Around the World organized by J. Sriram. They then had a Slow Cycling Race while lady staff competed in Lemon & Spoon race both conducted by N. R. Krishnaswamy. The tug of war contest was abandoned after the rope gave in to the pulls on both sides!

Our members returned to their school days when they played Kho-Kho along with some of our wards. In a spirited competition Harirajans team defeated K. Kanakarajs team 2-1. Lady members and spouses played musical chair. Wards had an exciting frisbees through hula hoops contest which was also replicated with senior members above 50 years of age.

After high tea we had the prize distribution function presided over by our President Mr. C. S. Vijayaraghavan. President welcomed the gathering and Mr. Shankar introduced the Chief Guest of the evening - International Grandmaster Mr. R. B. Ramesh. Mr. Ramesh spoke about his international experiences in playing chess and congratulated the members of the club for playing indoor and outdoor sports regularly.

Israeli scientist Daniel Shechtman won the 2011 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his discovery of quasicrystals, a mosaic-like chemical structure that researchers previously thought was impossible. Shechtmans discovery in 1982 fundamentally changed the way chemists look at solid matter. It initially faced strong objections from the scientific community, and even got him kicked out of his research group in the US National Institute of Standards and Technology. Contrary to the previous belief that atoms were packed inside crystals in symmetrical patterns, Shechtman showed that the atoms in a crystal could be packed in a pattern that could not be repeated. He was studying a mix of aluminum and manganese in his microscope when he found a pattern similar to Islamic mosaics that never repeated it self and appeared contrary to the laws of nature. Since then, quasicrystals have been produced in laboratories and a Swedish company found them in one of the most durable kinds of steel, which is now used in products such as razor blades and thin needles made specifically for eye surgery, the citation said. Scientists are also experimenting with using quasicrystals in coatings for frying pans, heat insulation in engines, and in light-emitting devices called LEDs. They were discovered in nature for the first time in 2009. Crystallographers always believed that all crystals have rotational symmetry, so that when they are rotated, they look the same. In 1982, in Washington, D.C., Shechtman first observed crystals with 10 points pentagonal symmetry, which most scientists said was impossible. For months he tried to persuade his colleagues of his find, but they refused to accept it. Finally he was asked to leave his research group. Shechtman returned to Israel, where he found one colleague prepared to work with him on an article describing the phenomenon. The article was at first rejected, but finally published in November 1984 to uproar in the scientific world. Double Nobel winnerLinus Pauling was among those who never accepted the findings. He would

stand on those platforms and declare, Danny Shechtman is talking nonsense. There is no such thing as quasicrystals, only quasi-scientists. Shechtman said.In 1987, friends of Shechtman in France and Japan succeeded in growing crystals large enough for x-rays to repeat and verify what he had discovered with the electron microscope. Opening a closed science Crystallography was considered a closed science. There was nothing more to learn, says Dr. David C. Van Aken, Curators Teaching Professor of materials science and engineering at Missouri S&T. His discovery took a settled science and turned it upside-down. Shechtman followed up the initial data, which he recorded in his notebook in April 1982, with other experiments that indicated the material had a five-fold symmetry, a characteristic that was thought to be impossible. Nobel prizes have generally split credit for scientific advances among two or three people, but the 2011 chemistry prize and the accompanying 10 million Swedish kronor ($1.4 million) went to Shechtman alone. Shechtman, is also a professor at Iowa State University and a researcher at the United States Department of Energys Ames Laboratory. Before his discovery, crystallographers believed that all crystals have rotational symmetry, so that when they are rotated, they look the same. Shechtmans assertions made him an outcast for a few years, but his dogged pursuit of an explanation of his findings eventually put him ahead of other researchers who, as it turns out, had observed similar patterns and data but had too-hastily dismissed the diffractions as being the result of twinned or intermingled crystals. In 1987, friends of Shechtman in France and Japan succeeded in growing crystals large enough for x-rays to repeat and verify what had been discovered with the electron microscope. -from Internet-SN-member No-876

The Guarding

Gourds!
Oozing with health and cosmetic benefits, both bottle and snake gourds are blessings in disguise that many are unaware of. The gourds are not just inexpensive but can result in finger licking dishes if experimented with well!
Serpentine Qualities The nutritive worth of snake gourdis unassailable when weighed against other vegetables. The gourd encompasses protein, fat, carbohydrate and soluble fibre. Its mineral and vitamin contents are calcium, phosphorus, riboflavin, thiamine, niacin and carotene. As the latest studies prove, snake gourd is gaining popularity for being an integral part of the anti-inflammatory diet chart. Inflammation if left ignored can result in serious illnesses like diabetes, heart attacks, stroke, cancer, mood disorders, sleep disorders, arthritis and Alzheimers. The use of snake gourd in alternative medicine is increasing because of its curative properties.

Due to its high water and low calorie content, the snake gourd is an excellent remedy for diabetes.

A decoction of snake gourd leaves and coriander leaves (soaking them in water overnight and straining the next day), served in a small portion, helps reduce bilious fever. The same decoction replaced with coriander seeds helps fight jaundice. A tablespoon or two of the juice extracted from its leaves consumed every day helps fight heart disorders like palpitation. Due to its high water and low calorie content,

the snake gourd is an excellent remedy for diabetes. The gourd is fibre rich and makes digestion easy, wards off constipation with ease. An expectorant, snake gourd helps remove phlegm and mucus from the respiratory tract serving as a natural antibiotic. As per Chinese therapy the gourd helps with lung and breast tumours and can promote lactation

Besides medicinal benefits, snake gourd has also been recognized for cosmetic benefits. The juice of snake gourd massaged on the scalp helps cure dandruff and alopecia- a hair fall problem that could lead to partial or complete baldness. Its high water content acts as a coolant on the body and helps beat the summer heat. It helps in clearing the toxic matter from the body hence acting as a good detox. The only precaution that needs to be taken while consuming the snake gourd is to reduce the addition of its seeds. If consumed in excess the seeds can cause nausea, indigestion, diarrhoea and gastric discomfort. Bottled Benefits Found in every kitchen of the Indian household, bottle gourd is believed to have originated in Africa but now it is a major constituent in Indian cuisine. Locally known as Lauki (Hindi) or Sorakkai (Tamil), this veggie is least known to the western world. People in the west, perhaps are not aware that the Indian delicacy Kofta Curry they relish and rave about is made of bottle gourd. As a precaution, scientists say that it is best to cook the vegetable as the toxin element tetra cyclic triterpenoid cucurbitacins is killed in the process eliminating all risk factors which may not be the case if it is consumed raw.

What is making this veggie popular these days? It has an enormous impact on the treatment of high blood pressure and heart disease. Bottle gourd is believed to help the liver function in a balanced fashion The juice from the leaves helps cure jaundice. Gourd juice, if consumed with lime juice, helps treat burning sensation in the urinary passage, reduces fatigue and keeps you fresh, especially during summer. It helps fight constipation, as it is fibre rich. Because of its fibre rich nature and low fat content it makes for an apt food for diabetic patients and young children. Bottle gourd is one of the best weight loss food besides being rich in zinc, iron, thiamicin, vitamin C and magnesium The juice from bottle gourd leaf helps in curing baldness and aids in preventing tooth decay.

home decor

Entertain guests in the convenience and comfort of home. Preethi Shanker gives you a cheat sheet to setting up the perfect home bar complete with essential glassware and liquor.
Home bars have gained popularity in recent times with more people preferring to stay in after hectic work hours. A home bar can be a great conversation starter or just a go to place after a long day of meetings. You also have a convenient place to store all your party basics which saves you from running all over the place to mix that perfect drink. Home bars range from all out bar counters modelled around the 80s sitcom Cheers to more space efficient ones.

26 | APRIL | 2013

Multitude of Styles The style of your in house pub depends entirely on the dcor of your home. If the bar is being included into the construction plans of a new house, the work is simpler as opposed to trying to integrate it into an existing space. But the beauty of setting one up is that you can find something to fit even the tiniest of spaces. A typical home bar has storage space for different types of liquor, mixers, glassware, bar equipment, swizzle sticks, napkins and garnishes. Invest in good quality equipment both in terms of furniture and accessories and this will help you in the long run. Front Bar or Straight Bar As the name suggests, this is a straight counter in which drinks are usually stored below the deck where shelves or drawers serve as storage space. Some furniture stores do have the option of having a closed cabinet but as a rule, straight bars are open on the bartenders end. This type of bar can be accompanied by a maximum of three bar stools. Back Bar A back bar is typically a straight bar with a tall counter at the back that is used to store drinks. A full out back counter or wet bar is an option widely used when space is not a constraint. This style is similar to a kitchen counter in terms of design, but the cabinets used as a backdrop are usually there for display purpose only, sometimes with glass doors. However, this is not recommended for an apartment as you tend to utilize the cabinet space for other storage and this invades on the bar aspect sometimes making it accessible to children as well.

APRIL | 2013 | 27

L-Shaped Bar An L-shaped bar can be either an island cabinet or against the wall with a back bar to support it. Sometimes the shorter end of the L houses a sink to enable easy washing and use of glassware. A Folding Bar or Swing Open Bar Are you looking for a bar that doesnt look like a bar when not in use? Well look no further. This is it! The unique folding design of this home bar not only saves space when its not in use, it also is a well designed completely functional bar when the party is on in full swing. This design maximizes the available floor space and has an aesthetic quality to it too. The closed doors also protect the liquor and glassware from dust, sunlight and your childrens fidgety fingers. Bar Cart If you dont entertain regularly or dont want to stock on liquor, the best option for you is the bar cart. A seemingly simple piece of furniture, a bar cart always serves its purpose and can be moved anywhere in the house as need be. The convenience of the portability outweighs the fact that it is not as refined or classic as any of the other options.

Know Your Liquor Once your watering hole is in place, it is only logical that you feel the need to stock up on all necessities and throw a big party for family and friends. But with such a diverse group of people it is difficult to store every persons favourite drink. Here is a list of basic indispensables that are bound to set every tongue tingling.

or un-aged. It serves as the perfect base for cocktails. Dark rum, however, gets its colour from aging in charred oak barrels which also adds to its flavour. The deeper the colour, the more aged it is. Whiskey: It is chiefly made by distilling malted barley and other grains and aging the resulting alcohol in oak casks. Whiskey made in different parts of the world is referred to differently and can be single or blended malt. Scotland commonly refers to its whiskey as Scotch, American whiskey is Bourbon and Ireland, of course, calls it Irish whisky. Brandy: Brandy is just distilled wine; it comes from grapes and can be produced pretty much anywhere grapes are grown. You can also have cherry brandy, apple brandy etc. depending on the type of wine. Cognac is nothing but fine French brandy. Other Basic Drinks: Beer is a must-have when it comes to home bars. You can stash up cans or bottles of it depending on your guests preferences. Wine is another common drink but entirely depends on your inclinations. Dont forget to stock up on ice, water, cola, orange / cranberry juice and soda. An opened bottle of soda goes flat in a jiffy, so alternately you can consider picking up a soda maker. Try experimenting with cocktails and carry some flavours like Cointreau or triple sec (orange), Amaretto (almond), Apple Schnapps (apple) and Brown Crme De Cacao (chocolate). With this complete guide, you will be able to totally bowl over amateurs and probably garner appreciation from the professionals too. Just remember to put out sufficient soda and water for those designated drivers. Cheers!

Vodka: Bartenders worldwide agree that it is by far the easiest drink to work with as it is a neutral spirit and takes on the flavour of whatever it is concocted with. Choose one with 40% ABV (Alcohol By Volume) or more. Gin: Gin in most parts of the world is the king of spirits. It has a strong profile - taste, aroma and a world of exotic profiles that differ from one gin to another depending on the herbs and spices used in its distillation. A basic gin is brewed with juniper berries. Like vodka, choose a gin with ABV of 40% or up. Rum: As is common knowledge, rum can either be dark or light. Light rum is basically young

Fashion is truly a global language. From the East to the West, continent to continent, it is the ultimate in international fusion. Every season, the melting pot that is style acts like an intercontinental sponge absorbing all that is beautiful and reinventing it.
Fashion is a journey in itself. From the opulent glamour of silks, velvet and lace in Regency England to the ever-popular and ubiquitous denim, fashion is essentially about the tiny details, little pieces of the puzzle that come together to form an ensemble. From the sensuous silken drapes of a kimono to the compact, shapely silhouette of jeans, fashion is a field of endless innovation and opportunity, marching to the beat of several drums each more fantastic than the other. Paris, Je Taime In many ways, fashion is a timekeeper. Just as we are eager to leap into the unknown, conquer new horizons and expect the unexpected, we also cling to the familiar, the essentials and the absolutes. Those who love fashion understand that in many ways, the root of every new idea is nostalgia. And nowhere in the world is that more evident than on the streets of the everromantic city of lovers, Paris. In Paris, fashion is innate. A touch here, a twist there Parisians dont just invent fashion, they live it. As Coco Chanel, the grand dame of Parisian fashion once said, Fashion is not something that
36 | APRIL | 2013

exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening. Paris is the epitome of that philosophy. From the penniless studentpopulation to the beautiful and glamorous who lounge at cafeson the Avenue des Champs-lyses, fashion is who they are. For most Parisians, fashion is uncalculated and simple. They are not bling and over the top. Neutral is their by-word. Blacks, browns, greys they sound boring but in reality, there is a reason why they are always in fashion. Black in particular is forever in vogue. Not only is it versatile but it also does not show much wear and tear a big advantage for those who shop at malls rather than at big labels. Parisian women love statement pieces but abhor the idea of overdoing it. They will build an outfit around a single spectacular piece a great silk scarf, a beautiful pair of earrings or even a fabulous pair of boots. Wearing too much colour is a sure sign that you are not a native. Clothing in Paris is also a symbol of respect. The locals are always personable. No sweatpants and t-shirts for them, even a visit to the grocery store requires fairly nice attire. Dressing badly is a sure fire way for people to assume that you are unpleasant after all, if you respected those around you, you would not be an eyesore. Strange logic, perhaps, but an assuredly Parisian one! In fact, until a few years ago, jeans were considered childish, attire more suited for the pubescent than an adult. Things have changed of course; women of all ages wear jeans now. However, ill fitting apparels are still an anathema, so the better fitted your jeans are, the less likely people are to frown upon your attire. For many years, niche restaurants did not seat peopledressed in jeans, deeming them too casual. Even now, Parisian eateriesare fashionably discriminatory leaving you with no recompensebut to dress better! Paris is home to some of the most revered fashion houses in the world Chanel, Yves St. Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Lanvin, Dior, Jean Paul Gautier and Christian Louboutin. From Chanels immortal tweed jackets to Louboutins sinful red soled stilettos Parisian glamour has given the fashion world some of the biggest and most iconic style statements. Fashion in Paris is subtle, classic in new age terms, Old School, but

never boring. Walking the streets of gay Paris is an education in itself how the years gone by have melded, shaped and inspired the fashion of today.

In Milan, luxury is a byword and it is common to see women dressed in branded apparel and carrying accessories from big fashion houses
Ciao, Milan! The fashion capital of Italy, Milan is the heart of luxury shopping in the country. From Prada and Versace to Moschino and Missoni, this is a city where luxury is a way of life, rather than a lifestyle choice. Home to the impressiveMilan fashion week, the women strolling in the streets can often be misconstrued for models. Impeccably dressed, perfectly coiffed and poised, the native Milanese women look ready for anything from an on the fly photo shoot to a day at the office. Fashion is one of the defining characteristics of the city. From as early as the 16th century, Milan was noted for its luxury goods. In fact, that is where the term Milliner or Milaner was coined, which referred to fine goods such as jewellery, extravagant apparel and hats. For

a while, Milans claim to fame was its industrial manufacturing; Florence was the capital of fashion in the country. However, as the years went by, Florences styles were deemed too formal and expensive for the laywoman. Milan soon made a name for itself with its more practical fashion. Italian fashion feeds off French haute couture, and the give and take between the two countries is very visible in terms of fashion forwardness. Clean, sleek lines, neutral colours, simple elegance - there are several shared elements between the two. In Milan, luxury is a byword and it is common to see women dressed in branded apparel and carrying accessories from big fashion houses. Like in Paris, black is never wrong and the average Milanese woman wears and carries a lot of black. But in some ways, the Italians are more adventurous than the French. Colour blocking is a popular trend, and the retro-vintage look never left. Milanese women are not afraid to try different colours and combinations. Fur, leather and animal prints are also common wear - and they are probably not faux! All Italian luxury brands have a distinct presence in Milan. Giorgio Armani, Valentino Garavani, Gianni Versace, Gianfranco Ferr, Miuccia Prada, Krizia, Moschino, Etro, Trussardi, Missoni, and Dolce & Gabbana have all made the city their home at some point. The Piazza del Duomo is an extremely popular place to shop in Milan, as is the Quadrilatero della Moda, which is one of the most popular shopping districts in the world. Via Monte Napoleane is famous for being one of the most expensive shopping streets in the world, home to some of the worlds most exclusive brands. New York, New York There is an indefinable buzz in the air in New York that busy city where skyscrapers dominate the skyline, seemingly iron wrought towers that allow you to take a long elevator ride up to the heavens. The city that never sleeps is filled with energy and that ever present underlying passion for life. New York is the big top at the circus and every minute of every day is show time. From the crazed consumerism of New York Fashion Week, arguably the most attended celebration of fashion in the world, to the small one-ofa-kind kitschy boutiques that litter Soho, this is a city of NOW, where the present is all that matters and the future is of your own making. Filled to the brim with artists, musicians, actors, businesspeople, and students the list is endless. Everyonein New York is a Somebody orat least, on their way to being one and it shows in what they wear. If Paris is about the classics, New York is about breaking stereotypes. Fashion is decidedly different. A melting pot of culture, New York is home to several communities from the multitudes of Indians to Polish immigrants, every nationality has something new and intriguing to offer and as it says on the Statue of Liberty Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. New York is the embodiment of the American Dream and fashion is just the tip of the multicultural iceberg. Style in NYC

is incredibly varied: From the Wall Street suits to the college kids plugged into their iPods on the subway there is nothing generic in this city. Style can range from subtle and haute couture to grungy and innovative - a medley of colours, fabrics and cuts. New York is home to some of the biggest trendsetters in the world. A fertile ground for both fashion designers and fashion houses, some of the most popular names in fashion originated here: Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs to name a few. In addition to flagship stores, New York is also home to a great tradition of vintage clothing stores and discounted designer clothing stores. Another fashion goldmine are the strip malls in New Jersey, only a short train ride away, that carry midlevel branded wear for reasonable prices.

Arigato, Tokyo! When one thinks of Japan, it is easy to think of the years gone by, with brave men bearing Samurai swords and beautiful, delicate women in kimonos, flirting with their fans over pots of aromatic tea. The Japan of today is considerably different. Tokyo is one of the biggest examples of cultural change in the country. Gone are the rigid adherences to propriety and tradition, the new generation of Tokyo natives live to make a statement. From bizarrely patterned and mismatched clothing to spiked and teased hair they have leftno facet of fashion unexplored. Much like how the film industry leaves a sizable impact on fashion in Western countries, Japanese fashionistas draw inspiration from their countrys biggest obsession - anime! An abbreviation for animation, anime is one of the largest and best known industries in Japan. These cartoons often feature adult themes and the artwork is renowned for its extensive detailing and realistic motifs. The influence of anime is clear in Japanese fashion. From dressing like their favourite anime characters to sporting cartoon symbols on their clothing, Japanese youth are always looking for the next cool thing. The fashion here is not just innovative, it is wildly futuristic. Localities like Shibuya, Harajuku and Ginza are fast becoming fashion hubs, with retail outlets that range from small and kitschy street wear clothing stores to bigger and more organized departmental stores. This is a young culture that celebrates the need for diversity and individuality From tattoos and piercing to faux hawks and long pigtails women in Japan wear exactly what they want. It isnt so much following trends as making their own. These women are trailblazers who delight in the unusual. Japanese designers like Akina Minami, Issey Miyake and Hanae Mori are becoming names to be reckoned with in the international fashion world. They are celebrated for their unusual outlook, attention to detail and the curious mix of traditional clean lines with chaotic and futuristic patterns and styles. Much like Japan itself, fashion is ever evolving - where the future is boundless, exciting and totally unpredictable.

ear Yamadwara we were also shown a nearby hillock, the top of which was covered by a huge rectangular fence with a lot of coloured flags. This is the place the Tibetans place the corpses to be consumed by the vultures, other birds and the nature. A practice, also followed by the Parsis, in India. TIBET: Pangaea(Gondwanaland) existed across the Sphere, North to South pole. About 200 million years ago it began to disintegrate. In the next 120 million years, land mass split into North America and Europe and Atlantic Ocean spread out between them. The African continent floated lazily

for millions of years to join up with Asia. A land mass near south pole split into 3 pieces. Two pieces drifted to become Australia and India, the triangular plate which collided with Asia in the northern hemisphere to form Tibet and Himalayas. The remaining 3rd piece is Antarctica. Hot molten rocks, less dense, raised up slowly like a hot-air balloon to form Tibetan plateau. Its crust is double the average of 30-35kms(depth) found in other parts of the earth. Its average height 4900mts (16000 ft). The Fourteenth Dalai Lama fled to India after a 1959 uprising managed by the Communist Party of China. Tens of thousands of Tibetans were killed. Tibet was closed to pilgrims from 1949 to 1980.

Now, with 90% Tibetans and 10% Hans-Chinese inducted into Tibet, it has 280 million people in 1.2 million sq.kms, one-eighth of total Chinese land area. Tibet alone is more than one-third the size of India!

and were nonchalantly treading a parallel path on the upper slopes of the mountain, which was an incredible sight. We had the case of a daring lady who fractured her arm falling from the pony but refused to return, on the first day, and continued and finished her Parikrama, purely with her prayer and grit. There was a small hailstorm and the speedy chill winds nearly froze our nose. We were well covered with monkey caps, two or three layers of gloves and dark glasses without which there is the danger of blindness with the ice-reflected sun light. On the first night, we took refuge in the dorms built by Shiva devotees. On the 2nd day of the trek (22kms), we passed through Zutual Puk where the ascetic Miterappa is known to have performed miracles. Later we reached Dolma-La Pass at a height of 18600, when some Yatris had to use oxygen bottles. My yoga exercises helped me to avoid one. While we were packing our bags during the day for our endurance, we were dumb-founded to see a Tibetan girl was doing the trekking with her body (i.e.prostrating with her entire body length as each step). She explained that shes fulfilling a vow and it would take her 27 days to complete the Parikrama; this revelation really humbled us. Some of us walked certain stretches by foot. At night, after dinner, we settled ourselves in the mud houses and tents with tightly arranged mattresses and blankets. On the 3rd day, the trek slopes down on the other side of Mount Kailash. All of us were on foot

Yaks carrying our supplies

Tibetan kids after receiving goodies Later, we were taken to the starting point of the trek, where we would be allotted ponies. The allotment of the ponies was a jig-saw puzzle. Each one was allotted with a pony, a Tibetan lady/ girl/ man to carry our back-pack and another person to pull the pony. For some, there was a short supply and the same person pulled the pony and carried the luggage. Some young Tibetan mothers were also carrying their babies!! A few who could not get horses dared the entire trek on foot! On day 10, the first day of the 18 km trek, mostly with the ponies, we had our first camp at Dira Puk at 5000mts. Some paths had stones and boulders on either side hardly separated by 2 and had a slope anywhere between 30-60 degrees. Some other places were easier to trek

with a green carpet of grass and a stream flowing along the gentle slope, created by the waterfalls at regular intervals from the imposing faces of the mountains on the other side. We did not lose the opportunity of getting down from the horse and lying down on the grass with both our hands cupped as pillows, with one leg folded on the other and singing songs. The horse would also rest and grab some food. Our short-eats carried from India included chocolate bars, dhalls, dry fruits et al. Our kitchen supplies were carried in a large basket by lean but healthy Nepali Sherpas as much as their weight and they were going ahead of us. The Tibetan yaks (hairy and bearded big buffaloes) were carrying the provisions in two large drums on either side, weighing around 200kgs

Pony led by the girl with the baby as climbing down on the horse can be very tricky and the horse can slip along with you anytime. Though the 3rd day was easier on breathing, it was a test on the knees with the foot applying brakes all the time. On the descent, we passed thru narrow trek and saw Gowri Kund (Parvathis tank) at the abyss below. Its a steep slippery detour of 2Km and we did not try. The water looks Emerald green; but when you fill-in a bottle, its crystal clear! Gauri Kund is the highest freshwater lake in the world at 18,536 ft. As one does the Parikrama, we actually go round the little mountains surrounding Mount Kailash which raises 4000 from an abyss. There is no record of anyone getting very near

Author after a dip in Manasarovar(4 deg C !) Mount Kailash, leave alone climbing it. If you are lucky you will see three faces of Mount Kailash on a clear day. The eastern face is covered by other mountains and can be seen only by those who do the inner level Parikramas which are difficult and dangerous and only taken up by staunch Saivite and Buddhist monks who had done dozens of outer Parikramas earlier. Historical connection to KAILASH: Situated between Himalayan and Karkorum ranges, this unique abode of Shiva has over 10,000 years of history. Rama and Lakshmana are believed to have been here to perform Shiva Puja. Lord Krishna and Arjuna are known to have worshipped Shiva at Kailash. Also, Pandavas, as per scripts, have made their last journey to this sacred place. Scores of saints and religious leaders including Veda Vyasa, Dattatreya, Jain leader Rishabandha, Gurunanak, Sundaramoorthy Nayanar, Avvaiyar and Karakial Ammaiyar (who treaded on her hands and head) have visited this holy place. There are references to Kailash by Sekkhizhar, Appar and Thirugnanasambandar.

A separate trek of Nandi Kora takes one to the Innerparikrama of 8 hours where there are Saptharishi caves; the Nandi shaped hill-top faces the southern face of Mt. Kailash on which the Parvathi steps are also visible. On this trek one can have the closest breathtaking view of this Mahameru. A handful in our group went half-way thru this trek for a distant but a clear view of this face and returned after four hours. The shorter route from the Indian side, its 629 Km from Delhi to Dharchula in Uttarakhand. Then take a pony or trek 65 Km to the Tibetan side. From here, its 162 Km by bus to Darchen. The sacred Mount Kailash is over 4300 high and the peak is at an elevation of 22000. Aerial view of Mount Kailash is believed to resemble a Shivalinga. There are unusual species of birds,

wildlife and flora here in the mountains. Energy fields surrounding Mt.Kailash caused the elements to be in the most active state. Diabetics need not take any medicine due to this and the exertion due to the trek. The cell phones also do not work and we din not need them as we were in touch with Lord Shiva! There are practically no toilets in Tibet except in some dormitories, which are in fact, unusable. So, we got used to the open fields and here; again, yoga really helped in squatting. We returned to the base and were lucky to be accommodated in a fairly well-maintained guest house near the banks of Manasarovar overnight. The chill winds via the lake was a challenge. Some of us, along with our Swamiji friend, kept awake during the Brahma-Muhurtha (3.30a.m to 5.00a.m), chanting Om

Namah Shivaya looking for the descending Gandharvas in the form of the falling stars merging into Manasarovar. Some of us did see these falling stars while others claimed that it was imagination! (See Mysterious lights at Manasarover YouTube). The next crisp morning, we went to the Buddhist temple on the hillock nearby before which we had bathed in the soothing hot water with minerals from a hot-spring, reluctantly giving chance to the next person. Queen Mayadevi is supposed to have used this spring and did the hard penance to conceive Siddhartha, later known as Lord Buddha. We started our return trip on the 13th day and reached Kathmandu on the 16th day and left for the airport on the 17th for our home stretch with blissful contentment.

Lets say its 6.15Pm and youre driving home (alone of course) after an unusually Hard day on the jab. Youre really tired, and frustrated You are really stressed and upset Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only five miles from the hospital nearest your home. Unfortunately you dont know if youll be able to make it that far. What to do??? You have been trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (cpr), but the guy that conducted the course did not tell youhow to perform it on yourself How to survive a heart attack when alone? Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before Losing conscious Answer: Do not panic, but start coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep Inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again

Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm in this way heart attack victims can get to a hospital. Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!!!
