The Falkland War notes Falkland Islands are two large islands and 200 smaller ones.

es. The islands are 300 miles off the coast of Argentina and are 8000 miles from Britain. In April 1982 (when the Argentine invasion took place) to the population was 1800. British nationals first settled on the islands in the 1830s and they were claimed by Britain in 1833. Argentina had already claimed the islands but as Britain was the worlds dominant naval force in the 19th century Argentina would not have been able to launch and sustain a successful invasion of the islands. No invasion was possible until later in the 20th century. In 1976 Harold Wilson, Labour Prime Minister warned that Argentina was sabre rattling with regards to the Falklands.
