Building 1,000 Lesson Plan Grade: Second Standards: 2.NBT.2- Numbers and Operations in Base Ten 2.NBT.

T.8- Use place value understanding and properties to add and subtract to 1,000

Objective: The students will be able to build numbers to 1,000

Materials: Digi-Blocks, and the envision Math packets Procedure: This activity will start off as a group project on the carpet. I will call the students to the carpet by what table they are sitting at. Once sitting in a circle at the carpet I will ask them to raise their hands to answer the questions I am about to ask them. To warm up I will ask them questions like, If they had to how would they count to 1,000? or Oh there has to be an easier way to count to 1,000 rather than going 1,2,3,4, do you know of an easier way? Then I will introduce the Digi-Blocks just as a review in case a student isnt aware of what this math tool is used for. I will begin by asking them if it is possible to hold a thousand things at one time, and then I will tell them that I am in fact holding 1,000 blocks in the Digi-Block container they are just grouped together in certain ways. That tool will help the students visualize an object of 1,000 and how it can be grouped and broken down into smaller parts. I will then open the box and reveal the ten blocks of ten inside the box that is representing 1,000. At this step we will talk through how many ones will make ten and how many tens can make one hundred. All the blocks will be set up in the center of the circle for all the students to see the breakdown of the blocks.

We as a group will review how many of each set will go in the lager set. For example when the lid is opened we will talk about how 10 hundred blocks equal 1,000 and then 10 ten blocks will equal one hundred and then how 10 ones equal ten. After that depending on how long that part of the lesson goes, the students will head back to their seats to complete the envision packet like they normally do and we will close out the lesson with a little review on how to build to 1,000. Management: This could get off task with moving to the carpet and then back to their seats. I plan to transition them by having them move in their table groups and also encourage them to raise their hands to answer any questions asked. Also if I see any student losing interest with the demonstration I may have them reveal the block but that will depend on the nature of the class that day.
