Evaluation Of Questionnaire

Male
Female

Question 1: What is your gender? Our target audience are mainly males, however, females also. Our hypothesis is that the male audience members will appreciate the drug content, scenes of violence and destruction, where as the females will greater appreciate the themes of friendship and youth more so- as well as the raving elements. This is why when distributing our questionnaire we purposely chose five boys and five girls, from which webelow can analyse the Question 2: Which category includes data . your age? As our music video and ancillary tasks are targeted for the younger generation- teenagers specifically, we insured that the majority of our questionnaire participants were in this category. Hence, we distributed the questioners to people in our 6th form block However, to use also as a reference when analysing the data we asked one individual who was aged 26. This allowed us to see any correlation between age and opinions. The persons answers were very similar to that of the teenagers, therefore we did not need to distribute more questionnaires to people of the same age or above as this acted as our control.

Question 3: What colour scheme would you like to see on a Drum & Bass album? The data clearly indicates that the majority of our target audience would prefer to see neon colours as a Drum & Bass albums colour scheme. We can hypothesize that this is due to the target audience members, who have most probably gone to raves, clubs, festivals where this music has been Series1 played, and where neon colours are seen. Strobe lights, glow sticks, light shows etc. Three of the ten individuals asked said they would prefer dark colours. Bright colours and black and white only received one each, and the use of saturated colours was no body's preference. Further evaluation of question: Saturated colours and bright colours could be misconceived as the same thing, further explanation of the differences should have been given to improve the validity of the question.

Question 4: How would you rank the three designs? (1) Being your most favorite and (3) being your least favorite?
The bar chart shows how of the three designs, design 1 was most preferred, with 5 people ranking as 1.

Series1

6 5 4 3 2 1 0 Design 1 Design 2 Design 3

It is important to not the three designs were purposely not coloured and then given to the participants. We wanted to give the simplest form of the design. Colour schemes will be decided upon later, once we gain feedback from the questions such as which colour scheme would you prefer, and questions to do with saturation, black and white design for example. If we added colour it would have skewed the participants attention away from the actual design, the placement of puff and images for example. That is what I believe.
We can see that Design 3 was least favorable. Five of the ten participants ranked the design as 3. Of the three designs this is indeed the simplest. Perhaps this is why people ranked it so low- because they were not bombarded with graffiti and big, overwhelming images such as in design 1.

Series1

Question 5: Of your preferred design, what do you like most about it? (Evaluation for design 1 as preferred) 1. How the track listing is integrated into the wall in the image, amongst the graffiti. I love the album cover image too- looks very professional 2.The design is Attractive 3. The back pane image and front pane (album cover) 4.Image of hand and sweets. Also the puff on the front is appealing, and the talk too frank 5.The album Cover This question required a comment, and therefore the raw data could not be put into a chart of any sort. Of the five participants that chose design one, three of them made specific comments towards their liking of the album front cover. It therefore arguably grabbed their attention early on. One of the participants made references to the puffs designed specifically to further advertise the product on the front cover, yet also provide help to people who are struggling with substance abuse, the talk to frank advertisement. It would have been far more convenient if certain participants elaborated further on what they liked about the album design, however overall we gain the knowledge that image on the front cover is indeed highly appealing to our target audience. Question 6: Of your preferred do you believe anything should be changed? For design, the three people that ticked yes, it is indeed highley usefull that they have given their suggestions, as I can later act upon these when starting draft two of the album cover. .
Yes No

One participant asked for more of a running theme. This is a very good suggestion, as it is my other two designs that have far more of a continuous theme. The second asked for more design within the CD cover. He did not elaborate, so we can only assume that perhaps he is referring to the background, behind the hand. Finally, participant three made the very useful comment of suggesting further design to the actual CD. On the design the CD is merely white with the name of the Drum & Bass producers. This needs far greater development.

Question 5: Of your preferred design, what do you like most about it? (Evaluation of design 3 as preferred) 1. I like the whole idea of hands and outlines of people. The way the artists name is integrated into the two people on the cover is very unique and artistic. Its simplicity. The idea of the silhouettes and how the theme continues though out each pane of the layout.

2. 3.

With this design I attempted to keep a very clear and distinct theme running through each pane of the CD, this was the notion of silhouettes. Two people who filled in the questionnaire noted on this, and commented about how they liked this idea. As two out of the three mentioned this, and arguably the third person who said only its simplicity was referring to the simple design of silhouettes in comparison to the graffiti and explosive images on designs one and two, I understand that if I was to use this design for the final album, then this theme is one I should retain. However, it is important to remember that out of the three designs this was ranked as the least favorable by the ten participants. Question 6: Of your preferred design, do you believe anything should be changed? The pie chart displays how 2 people answered yes and 1 ticked the no box . One participant that said yes made a reference to using more puffs. On evaluation I have noticed that this design is significantly lacking in puffs. I should design a puff to attract the audience and call out to them, something that would stand out.
Yes
No

The second participants comment is indeed very helpful. He mentioned how the back pane should be though out about more - in terms of design. I designed the back pane to be just a CD, almost to strip everything right down to what this group is about- music. The sounds, the style, everything compressed to one CD. However on evaluation it does seem relatively plane, and should be further developed.

Question 5: Of your preferred design, what do you like most about it? (Evaluation of design 2 as preferred)

1. The inside pane images I believe are a very interesting idea. Also the design on the CD and album name (Then a drawing indication towards the electro diagram ECG) 2. I think the design is very appealing to the genre. Its dark

Truthfully, these comments where not the best feedback, however working with what I have, I can assume that participant 2s comment is relating to the hand drawn design that goes around the four panes of the CD. It has graffiti elements to it, and integrates shapes and iconic images such as a drum set towards the top of the design on the CD cover. Participant ones comment was much better, he noted on the ECG style of writing for the album name Different Morals. The participant mentions how he believed the design for the inside pane was an interesting idea. The notion of having snap shots of a mixer at ministry, image of a crows, and an image of headphones. Perhaps this is because this person in particular wishes to identify with the artist, which is arguably not very conventional to the drum and bass genre of music, where album designs have quirky, sometimes dark, unidentifiable images. Question 6: Of your preferred design, do you believe anything should be changed

Yes No
This whole pie chart indicates that they both questionnaire participants share the belief that nothing about the design should be changed.

Question 7: Which of the typographys on the provided sheet would you most like to see on a Drum & Bass album front cover?
This bar chart shows a group with varying ideologies. The font that was most preferred was Braggadocio, with 4, however Silom was not far behind with 3. All the fonts on the sheet provided were of the same size ( to avoid bias results). Perhaps is the shire thickness and razor edged lettering of this font that people found appealing, as it is a reflectance upon the hard, fulfilling sounds of drum & bass.

Question 8: What images and themes do you believe are conventional to the Drum & Bass genre? When asked this question, the recurring themes and images were: Raves, music festivals, crowded spaces and Dj equipment. In fact, 8 out of the 10 questionnaire participants said the theme of Drugs. Due to the recurring nature of these themes and images by the target audience, I will attempt to incorporate them in my final design. One person commented on Dark images like war, space, nuclear weapons. Three people also commented on the notion of space, and images of outer space. Teenagers also came up quite frequently in the comment box, and one person noted on the theme of friendship. What was considerably good about the results for this question where that the ideas where all very similar, which has densely condensed all the ideas I will need to work with. Clearly these are all specific images that have both purposely, and through stereotypical misconceptions, shaped our target audiences perception of Drum and Bass, as they have all picked up on the same things.

Question 9: Would you like to see a combination of hand drawn and photography on the front and back cover? Depicted on the pie chart to the left is how the majority of questionnaire participants would prefer not to have a combination of Yes hand drawn and photography on the album. It is only 6 4 however, No the margin is not large, does not draw much clarity towards our target audiences views. Perhaps this means if I possibly choose to develop this type of design further, I am in need of creating a more specific questionnaire on on this design type. Asking such questions as why not, would you prefer it on the inside panes of the CD album instead? or would you prefer photography on the front, and hand drawn on the back. Question 10: With the images on the album, would you like to be able to identify who the artist is? The results are exceedingly clear; our target audience does not want to be able to identify with their drum & Bass artists visually. Perhaps this is because this is a genre where fashion, appearance, good-looks even are very unimportant- Only the music matters . The raw data is that 8 out of the 10 questioner participants said No. The question allowed for a comment box if yes, why. Upon further evaluation, it has become visible to me that the box should have been, for far better results, if no, why?. That way perhaps more participants would have indeed filled the box after ticking the appropriate option- with such comments as far more mysterious, or relatively few drum & bass artists show their faces. Notes: One person who ticked yes and filled it in commented: So I know who it is when I'm going through my CD collection years after buying it. This is a valid point, however it is one participant out of the ten asked, and smaller still, out of the two that ticked yes- as the other did not comment.

Question 1: If an image of the artists is used on the album front cover, what camera shot/angle would you like to see? (the group consists of three producers). Perhaps the question out of the entire questionnaire that has the least validity. Firstly, the bar chart shows how mid shot and low angle both received 4, and canted and long shot received Series2 one. The invalidity lies within my question; I did not specify low Series1 angle mid shot/long shot/close-up for example, so peoples envisioning of low angle is probably very different. Also, most of the people asked are either in my media class or have taken media. These students would understand the representation of power- associated with a low angle shot, and therefore ticked this box because of this. This is therefore somewhat invalid in that people without the knowledge, haven't really been asked. The idea of what our target audience wants, in terms of this question, is far more difficult to interpret.

Question 2: Do you believe it is important to have a running theme or design that continues on each pane of the CD album?
Yes No

The pie chart shows how 9 out of 10 said yes to this question, and therefore I am enlightened with the knowledge that this is something I should indeed have in my final design, as it is of great importance to our target audience. The set of results give me great clarity and speak form themselves; further evaluation is not required.

Question 3: Would you prefer for the album name to be larger than the artists name on the front cover?

Yes No

3 tenths of the pie chart are in red, which means 3 people that answered the questionnaire said No. The results are quite clear in suggesting that the name of the artist/artists needs to be visibly clear, and somewhat of the focal point of the album. Perhaps this is because these people want to identify with who the artists is not with an image of the person, (as the results of question 10 would suggest) but instead by their name Question 4: The following question is specific to design 1. or logo even. With the knowledge that the song, Daylight on the album has a music video where drugs are represented as sweets and are a key theme, do you believe the sweets on the albums front cover should be saturated in colour? This relatively meaty question evoked a very clear response from the participants; that yes, our target audience believe it is a good idea. The pie chart shows how 8 of the 10 participants answered yes, which is indeed the vast majority. This question also forms a direct link in with the other section of my coursework; the music video. If I choose to develop this design towards final design, then the link of sweets and Drumsound & Basslinesmith will be prominent, and perhaps the image of sweets could evolve into something of a logo for the producers.

I felt that here, at the questionaries' end, it was important to focus the participants attention and answers back to my three designs. Therefore, I made the final three questions far more specific

Question 5: The following question is specific to album design 2. Do you believe the graffiti on the album cover, inside pane and CD pane should be in black & white of coloured?

Question 6: The following question is specific to album design 3. Do you believe having the entire album photo shopped as silhouettes would be an appealing design? This final pie chart show how 8 of the 10 models for our target audience answered yes to the question. 2 answered No and no-body ticked the other box. These results are interesting; it seems the idea of shilioutes is far more appealing that I estimated in the early stages of designing. I assumed that the notion of silhouettes would be far to plain and mundane for a drum & bass CD cover, in that the audience would want details, colours, depth and shape. The results have subverted my expectations, and there is a high possibility that now, after viewing these results, that this will be a running theme in the final album design.

Unlike the results for the prior question, this bar chart depicts results that are far less conclusive. Black and white received 6 ticks where as coloured received 4. Perhaps the question was in need of further categorize, for example sketched/darkly coloured/ brightly coloured. The other section is there, but as this is towards the end of a relatively long questionnaire, it is a possibility that the mundane questions have taken their toll, and the participants just want to finish- hence skewing away from the other box that requires them to specify. This is a possibility. If the graffiti was kept for a final design, perhaps a few more specific Questions are needed.
