Process Directions: 1. Divide the class into small groups. Each group receives a spinner. 2. Assign the reading selection and post it on the front board. 3. Following the selection, each person in the group spins and shares based on what the spinner designates. Ideas for the spinner features: Main ideas of the story Descriptive details Compare and contrast elements Similes and metaphors Facts and opinions Purpose Authors viewpoint Personal connections 4. After students have completed this activity in their small groups for 20-30 minutes, pull the class back together and spin and share as a whole group. When/Examples: This strategy will be utilized during reading. The students will have the opportunity to understand the key literary components of a reading selection and will be able to work cooperatively in their groups to formulate their responses.
