THE PASSIVE VOICE

Form:
be (+ tense) + -en Present tense simple Active voice Ann calls me. Passive voice I am called by Ann. Active voice Ann is calling me. continuous Passive voice I am being called (by Ann).

Present perfect tense


Active voice Ann has called me. simple Passive voice Ive been called (by Ann). continuous Active voice Passive voice Ann has been calling me.

Active voice Ann called me.

Past tense simple continuous Passive voice Active voice Passive voice I was called (by Ann). Ann was calling me. I was being called (by Ann).

Examples:
Millions of people speak English all over the world. English is spoken (by millions of people) all over the world. Ann has found these books outside. These books have been found outside (by Ann). Maradona kicked the ball. The ball was kicked by Maradona.

Use:
1. To emphasize the thing done rather than the doer: English is spoken all over the world. 2. When the doer is unknown: My money has been stolen.
