Introduction

I examined the feasibility to add a food waste class to the Anchorage School District curriculum. I researched the amount about how much food is wasted in the US. About 10 million pounds of food is wasted in the United States. In schools all over the US students throw away food that they dislike or don't want.

Criteria

Is adding the education of food waste profitable for the school district? Will this teach children and future generations that food is valuable?

Will this impact the whole community besides schools.

Methods

Conducted Primary and Secondary Research

Looked at ways that food waste can be used in other ways, like producing energy.

Distributed a questionnaire to 20 fellow UAA English 212 students and received 13 responses.
Analyzed the data and created graphics using the statistical information provided by the respondents.

Results

In figure 1 most of the participants agreed that food has value and that it must be taught to future generations. In Figure 2 many participants agreed that they would pay an amount for the class if it wasn't a lot of money or if it was worth it. This would be profitable for the ASD.

Results

In Figure 3 most of the participants agreed that if the class allowed parents get involved with the class and it gave volunteer opportunity the class would be worth it. Overall the participants agreed that this class could be beneficial to the community by providing volunteering. Also they agreed they would pay amount of money if the class was interesting and engaging for the students.

Conclusions

This class would be profitable for the ASD because parents are willing to pay for the class if the class had added benefits. Hence the ASD will gain money. This class has the potential to teach future generations if they get support from their parents.

This class can help the community by giving children experience in volunteering if allowed.

Recommendations

Increase the knowledge of children of all grades about food waste. Increasing knowledge would help to lower food waste, that is a problem that should be noticed.
