PERCEPTIONS OF IMPROVING THE SCHOOL CANTEEN OF

CONCEPCION NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Canteen is a known store that is in an institution such as schools, as they

do not only cater school essential supplies but they also serve nutritious foods

to satisfy the students hungry stomachs. This area is also created in order

to secure the students health and well-being, it is also known that having a

clean environment can also add on making a more healthier food products.

Although it can’t be avoided that there are times wherein canteen facilities

have an unclean environment and the ways of producing goods can be

affected as it can become more hazardous, even more unsafe for the

students to eat. And by help of the studies we have researched in the internet

we have gathered enough information to help us prove our research paper.

The purpose of improving canteen services using the force field analysis

method because the results of research conducted in the canteen of each

faculty at the UM, there are still many deficiencies such as canteen services,

canteen cleanliness, menu variations, prices, and other inadequate canteen

facilities. (Vira, et al, 2020) Accordingly, guidance on proper food consumption

at school and creating an environment to obtain healthy foods is essential.

The school canteen has to play a major role in this task. (Sri Lanka Ministry of
Education, 2020) To support adolescents to make healthier food choices,

many national governments have formulated food policies to encourage a

healthy offering of foods and drinks in schools and their canteens. To create

healthier canteens, nudging strategies are used, by which the healthier option

is made easier without restricting the freedom of choice.(Irma, et al, 2020)

Whereas according to this another study, customer’s satisfaction is an

important key for the economy sector. The service of canteen is important in

developing interest in buying nutritious and healthy food among customer,

making it possible for them to enjoy nutritious and healthy food at affordable

prices during the day. The canteen should also provide the customer variety of

foods and dishes. (Intan et al, 2019) Canteen should not only play a role in

providing food, but also should ensure the nutrition and safety of student's diet

and promote the health of student's life. (Huang Wenjin, 2019)

And based on this another research from students of Caluluan High School,

Concepcion,Tarlac, Philippines, schools are encouraged to implement

comprehensive health and well-being programs, including food and nutrition

education. They help eliminate malnutrition, and serve as a venue for the

development of desirable eating habits among students. The maintenance of

high standards of sanitation in the food service operation cannot be


compromised by the management. Sanitation should be treated as a way of

life in food service because laxity in sanitation rules can mean illness for

customers. The Department of Education is responsible for giving and

supporting the student’s health and well-being through its curriculum.

Moreover, it encouraged the schools to implement some complete health

programs, including food and health nutrition education. The researcher said

the that canteen should serve as the place or venue for the development of

eating habits, in addition the canteen should also serve as the laboratory for

Home Economics which will provide hands on training for the students and

employees on planning, purchasing, preparation of safe nutrition meals.

And while on the other hand it is stated that, Department of Education

is strongly committed to support student’s health and well-being through its

curriculum in schools and range initiatives that offer opportunities for

physically fit individuals who loves eating healthy food. While on the other side

of it there are visible problems canteen faces in the Philippines and of those is

presently, Mintal Comprehensive High School (MCHS) has various challenges

that need to be addressed especially in terms of its canteen service quality

provided to students. Some of the complains addressed was how the canteen

should have a more spacious venue because most of the time it is crowded.

There are also various experiences and complaints from students regarding
the kind or variety of foods display in the canteen. (Norman R. Galabo, 2019)

This study will focus on improving the school canteen services of

Concepcion National High School, Koronadal City. Hence, by conducting this

research and having access to know what are the students and teachers

experiences and opinions on the canteen’s services, product quality, and

facility we will certainly gain enough information to properly address the

issues we can resolve regarding the canteen. We would also like to dig

deeper on the participant’s insights about how the canteen should improve,

may it be in their services, products, and/or about the canteen’s surroundings.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to gather enough information regarding the students

perception about the Canteen of Concepcion National High School, and so

the ff. questions will be answered by the participants;

1 . What are the satisfactions you’ve received regarding the school canteen’s

services of Concepcion National High School as a student?

2 . What are your thoughts about the canteen of Concepcion National High

School in terms of:

a. ) cleanliness
b. ) product or food quality
c. ) prices of the products

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This research is based on various theories we have researched and gathered,

first of is we have the theory by Sandra (world food story) entitled 𝙛𝙤𝙤𝙙

𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙤𝙧𝙮. This theory revolves on many matters such as how humans view

food, what are some of the humans most eaten foods, and many more,

although as we have examined Sandra’s theory we also have seen something

that we can relate to our research. It is said that food is a human necessity as

they provide the energy and vital nutrients for survival. The nutritional needs

to help treat the condition will require healthy and nutritious foods, some of

which may be recommended by a doctor. (Sandra, 2020) And the second one

according to Porral et al. (2018) this study examines whether the level of

product involvement influences how emotions drive consumer satisfaction.

Based on the 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙃𝙚𝙙𝙤𝙣𝙞𝙘 𝘼𝙨𝙮𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙮, it is analyzed

through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) how emotions drive consumer

satisfaction.
