Semiotics is the study of symbols and signs and how they are used and interpreted. 2. Krauss points out that while the f holes of the violin represent the presence of a violin that is not actually there, they also signify a deeper sense of rotation and depth, as they are not mirror images of each other. It is as if the larger f is skewed and brought in closer as it is rotated, symbolizing depth on a surface of which it is characteristically absent. 3. Similar to the way the f-holes symbolize depth on flat surface, the newsprint signifies transparency on an opaque surface. He creates this effect by painting over the fine type of the newsprint. The newsprint plays a dual role by being both a surface to paint over, and by being something affixed to the collage, and therefore something to look at. However, one must look through the painting to see the newsprint, and thus penetrability comes into play.
