B. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson plan is designed for 3rd grade students to learn about the Northwest Coastal Indians culture and how they adapted to their surroundings. For reading and information students will be using their book: Tools of Native Americans: A kids Guide to the History and Culture of the First Americans. C. Student Population: Grade Level: 3rd grade Skill Level: students at all learning levels Grouping: Whole group reading & discussions, independent assessment. D. Materials: Book Totem pole activity sheet Journals Pencils/crayons/construction paper/glue/scissors

E. Objectives: H1.3.2- Using artifacts and primary sources, and investigate how individuals and families contributed to the founding and development of the local community. H1.3.3- Learn about individuals around the world and discuss their contributions.

Student friendly objectives: Students will identify individuals around the world and discuss their contributions Students will identify current or past individuals around the word and discuss their contributions.

Call students attention to the information we will be reading as a class about the Northwest Coastal Indians. Identify & discuss The tribes that lived long ago and their contributions to society. Introduce vocabulary that will come up during the reading. 2. As a class read pages 34-45 in Chapter three of Tools of Native Americans: A kids Guide to the History and Culture of the First Americans. 3. Students should take notes and record five interesting facts about the Northwest Coastal Indians while we are reading. 4. As questions as an ongoing check for understanding. Ask these questions: What states were the Northwest Coastal Indians found in? Which tribes were considered Northwest Coastal Indians? Why were these Indians considered rich compared to other Indians? What did these Indians use cedar trees for? What kind of houses did they live in? What were they made from? What kind of work did the men and women do? 5. After the reading we will start the Totem Pole activity. In which we will read the information together and then work on them individually. Students will color and then cut out their totem pole faces. They will then glue them onto construction paper. 9. Closure: Discuss key characteristics of the Northwest Coastal Indians. I will review the feedback give and assess whether the students have grasped the information. G. Assessment: To assess the students understanding I will have them journal about the lesson. The will be asked to tell a story involving key information about the Northwest Coastal Indians. They must include at least four piece of information they learned from the lesson in their stories. I will know whether the students understand the concepts taught to them by observing them while doing the lesson and by what they write in their journals. This will measure the students understanding because the

students will be writing down their own ideas about the Northwest Coastal Indians based on the information learned in the lesson.
