EAN India - Objective

Create awareness on applications & benefits of using EAN standards : - For enhanced productivity & higher competitiveness - For compliance with international best practices - In EDI/EC Promote EAN use amongst solution providers, system integrators etc.

Operate as a national focal point for EAN Internationals activities.

Provide host of EAN related services to members. Keep Indian industry informed of related new emerging technologies

EAN India - International Affiliation

Affiliated to EAN International, Belgium controlling 97 EAN organizations worldwide

Over 900,000 companies use EAN.UCC standards worldwide

EAN International works closely with Standards Committees on EDI, Barcoding, ECR etc.

Barcoding
Barcoding provides the means for automatic data capture of information. When used with intl numbering standards, it permits universal and unique identification of goods, services, assets etc.

TYPES OF BARCODES

Linear Barcodes

Two-Dimensional (2D) Barcodes

Intl Numbering System & Barcodes - Concept

WHY BARCODES ?

To enable data capture

- Once only (at point of manufacture) in the supply chain.

- For 100% accuracy and high speed.

- Easy integration with in-house software applications. - Generation of automated billing, packing lists, delivery challans etc. - Effective product track & trace - Faster customer turn around at points of sale

HOW IS A BARCODE USED?

Mobile Radio-Frequency based on-line data collection

Mobile data collection using Portable Data Terminal

Downloading of data from the Portable Data Terminal (PDT), onto the computer

HOW IS A BARCODE USED?

Mobile, Batch mode data collection

Key drivers for barcoding and anticipated benefits

Barcoding is international practice for past 25 years and there is increasing demand from overseas buyers for accepting only barcoded supplies. Product track & trace requirements enabling product recall (if required for expired drugs, defective/spurious goods, etc.) Global demand for efficient and automated supply chains for product movement from point of manufacture to its point of sale/consumption. Just in time monitoring requirements of product stock levels (to avoid over stock/under stocks) of essential items (pharma, drugs, food products, etc). Cost pressures to reduce end product prices to consumers thru reduction in supply chain costs. Requirement for accuracy/speed in facilitating movement of goods thru automatic data capture (by barcoding).

Key drivers for barcoding and anticipated benefits

Global requirement of electronic communication (thru EDI etc.) of information on exported/imported items in importexport trade infrastructure (Ports, Customs/ Buyers/ Suppliers/Banks/Freight forwarders, etc.) require automatic data capture thru barcoding as key enabler.

Elimination of wastages in supply chains due to efficient processes.

Global movement towards closer integration of suppliers and buyers worldwide and global requirement for lowering end product costs. Indian exporters need to integrate with international best practices (barcoding, EDI etc) or get isolated in international trade in coming years.

Intl Numbering Stds. - Diverse and Innovative Applications

- Distribution (Product track and trace, information flow)

- Marketing (Sales forecasting based on consumption)

Manufacturing (Inventory control, raw material procurement, work-inprogress, dynamic production scheduling) Customer Satisfaction (Low product prices, quick replenishment, faster checkouts)

- Exports - In line with buyers requirements, intl best practices. - Product track and trace

Using Intl Numbering System with barcodes

Permits global identification of goods/services at three levels

- Retail (consumer packs)

- Trade (cartons) - Logistics (containers, pallets) One intl standard multiple applications

Retail items - EAN-13

- EAN members identity

Prod. No. : Item identity allocated by manufacturer/importer Check digit: Calculated from all preceding digits

Serial Shipping Container Code or EAN - 128 - Unique number assigned to a Logistics Unit Enables Asset Tracking Serial Identification, Tracking and Tracing of containers

Enables Efficient Shipment Routing by carriers

Enables Efficient Receiving, Storage and Despatch processes through automation Major freight forwarders in Europe have standardised on use of SSCC numbering for universal and unique consignment level identification for goods in transit.

Usage of Barcoding in India current status

Automobile Industryfor inventory management/ track & trace/production scheduling. FMCG Industry for inventory management/track & trace/production scheduling. Readymade garments Industry for inventory management/track & trace/production scheduling.

Pharmaceutical Industry for inventory management / track &

trace/production scheduling. Retail Industry FMCG, Apparel, Grocery, etc. Exports (on buyers directives)

Healthcare (hospitals etc)

Alcoholic beverages (State Excise retail vends, etc ) Canteen Stores Department (Min. of Defence).

Availability status of Technology and ease of implementation in India.

Barcoding companies ( Hardware /Software suppliers) are available across the

country.
Generally easy to implement barcoding (through printing on product packaging, labels, tags, etc). Low cost of implementation (depending on requirement) for just labeling (less than one rupee/label onwards), printing on product packaging to acquiring hardware ( barcode printers etc, for high end applications). Easy availability of international numbering standards used in barcoding (thru EAN India a non profit organization promoted by Ministry of Commerce Indian Industry) and availability of technical guidance on implementation.

Global Initiatives on E-procurement

GEPIR Project To facilitate master data alignment of product information through interconnected electronic catalogues.
Specific Advantage to SMEs to use GEPIR

The same EAN/ UPC company prefix provides the SME a link internationally with global buyers / sellers and access more trade opportunities in addition to the supply chain benefits of EAN/ UPC barcoding.

Objective of the project

Integration of subscriber database of EAN India to GEPIR(Global EAN-UCC Party Information Register) Network.
facilitate the search (based on different criteria) of EAN India database from GEPIR Network sites. And alternatively search of GEPIR Network sites database from EAN India site
