Clinical Interview o Assess symptoms o Need to understand the development of symptoms and the context in which they arise. Anxiety Disorders o Fears that are uncontrollable and disproportionate to the actual danger the person might be in o Disrupt ordinary life o Involve Physical symptoms Motor tension, jumpiness, trembling, racing heart. dizziness Generalized anxiety o Worrying about worries o Persistent anxiety for at least 6 months without specific reason. Panic Disorder o Recurrent, sudden onset of intense terror, often without warning and with no specific cause Heart palpitations, shortness of breath, chest pains, sweating, dizziness Phobic Disorder o Irrational, overwhelming, persistent fear of a particular object or situation o Fear is so dreaded that the individual goes to almost any length to avoid it Systematic Desensitization o Pair feared stimulus with relaxed state o Identify a specific fear you would like to overcome. Come up with about 10-15 situations related to your specific fear that genuinely provoke anxiety. OCD o Anxiety-provoking thoughts that will not go away and/or urges to perform repetitive, ritualistic behaviors to prevent or produce some future situation Obsessions Recurrent thoughts Compulsions Recurrent behaviors PTSD o Develops through exposure to a traumatic event that overwhelms a persons ability to cope o Symptoms include Flashbacks Avoiding emotional experiences

Emotional numbing Sleep disturbances Concentration and memory problems

Treatment o Antianxiety drugs commonly known as tranquilizers Benzodiazepines EX. Xanax, Valium Fast acting, potentially addictive
