Fitting Information
Machined fittings (i.e.: flange adapters, stub ends, machined reducers, MJ adapters, slip joint anchors, end caps, branch saddles) are normally fully pressure rated to SDR ordered unless otherwise specified. Machined fittings are normally stocked in most SDRs listed and can be re-machined to a lesser wall thickness if needed. Some fittings may require additional machining charges, please inquire for pricing information if re-machining is necessary. Fabricated Fittings: Fabricated mitered fittings (ie: elbows, line tees, line crosses and wyes) are generally rated at 80% of the pressure rating of the SDR of material that is used for the fitting (ie: a mitered fitting produced using SDR-11 160 psi material would be pressure rated for a working pressure of 128 psi). Fully pressure rated mitered fabricated fittings will be constructed using the next size heavier SDR material available (ie: fittings rated for a SDR-11 160 psi working pressure rating would be manufactured using SDR-9 material). Other fabricated fittings such as branch saddle tees, branch saddle wyes, fabricated concentric reducers and waterstops are normally pressure rated to the SDR ordered. Fabricated fittings are stocked in most SDRs listed. Re-machining ends of a fabricated fitting to a lesser SDR may require additional machining charges. Please inquire for pricing information if Re-machining of ends is necessary. Molded Fittings: Molded fittings are stocked in most SDRs listed and are normally fully pressure rated. Re-machining ends of molded fittings will require an additional charge. Please inquire for Quick Quote if Re-machining of ends is necessary. Resale Items: Resale items (i.e.: back up rings, drive-in stiffeners, gland packs, transition fittings) are normally stocked only in most frequently used sizes and pressure ratings. More information regarding resale items may be obtained through our Customer Service Department.

Iron Pipe Sizes (IPS) Ductile Iron Pipe Sizes (DIPS) & Copper Tube Sizes (CTS)
Thermoplastic pipe is made to three dimensioning systems based on controlled outside diameter. These pipes have a controlled outside-diameter equal to those of commercial IPS wrought steel pipe (steel pipe sizes) specified by ANSI B36.10, ductile-iron pipe sizes specified in AWWA C151, and small diameter copper-tube-size (CTS) per ASTM B88. Controlled outside diameter pipes are manufactured to the stated ODs below, but with the pipe walls sized in accordance with the Dimension-Ratio (DR) principle whereby all pipe sizes in the same DR series have the same ratio of OD to minimum wall thickness. All pipe sizes of the same material and constant DR series have the same working pressure rating and pipe stiffness.

Pressure Ratings are calculated using 0.63 design factor for HDS at 73F as listed in PPI TR-4 for PE4710 materials. Temperature, chemical, and environmental use considerations may require use of additional design factors. Pipe weights are calculated in accordance with PPI TR-7. Average inside diameter is calculated with nominal OD and minimum wall thickness plus 6%. Actual IDs will vary and are controlled by the dimensions and tolerances listed in the applicable pipe specifications. Pipe OD (inches) Per AWWA C906, the working pressure rating equals the pressure DR= Minimum Wall Thickness (inches) class, with an allowance included in the WPR for pressure surge. The pressure and surge design basis for polyethylene pipe is The Long-Term Hydrostatic Strength of PE4710 Polyethylene Pipe is different from the PVC and DI pipe design basis. For DRs not listed 1600 psi at 73.4 F. All pipe sizes with the same DR and Long Term Hydrostatic Strength will have equal operating pressure capability. please contact your customer service representative.

CALCULATION:
Hydraulic Gauge Pressure (psi) Where:
a
+ Drag Factor
= Pipe outside diameter (in) = Pipe inside diameter (in) = Interfacial pressure required (75 psi) = Total hydraulic piston area (in 2) = Hydraulic gage pressure required to move the pipe and carriage / clamp. 30 psi is generally accepted as a minimum.
* The drag factor is an important parameter easily overlooked. If two long pieces of pipe are being fused, the drag factor can easily reach much higher pressures.

Additional Tips To Insure A Quality Butt Fusion A quality butt fusion joint has a double bead rolled back to the OD body of the pipe. Use caution when handling completed fusion joints until joint has cooled to ambient temperature. * Recommended interfacial pressure is 75-psi (+/- 5 psi). ( PPI Report TR-33 cites 60 psi - 90 psi range )

8. Raise moveable clamps and remove heater plate. 9. Bring melted surfaces together rapidly and smoothly. Apply continuous progressive pressure until proper fusion bead is formed. Maintain pressure until joint has cooled (until comfortable to the touch). ( For additional information, refer to PPI Report TR41. ) REMEMBER: Install proper sidewall and fitting inserts in fusion unit for the pipe and fittings being joined.
Be sure correct sidewall adapters are installed on heater plate. A quality side fusion joint has a uniform, well-aligned appearance all around. Heater plate should be checked periodically with a pyrometer for correct surface temperature (475o F - 500o F ). * Avoid materials that melt and stick to heater plates.

Design Data Needed: Specific valve information including the manufacturer, model number, disc diameter, valve width face to face and stem location (center line location or offset location). For sizes not listed in our catalog butterfly flange adpter design is availble, charges are based on an hourly rate for engineering services. Please contact customer service for more details. Warning & Disclaimer: Butterfly flange adapters should always be trial fit to the actual valve and then field tested for valve disk clearance and full rotation prior to butt fusion of the flange to the pipeline. After butt fusion and bolt up of flange repeat this trial at each occurrence to insure final install is properly centered thus again allowing valve disk clearance and full rotation. The above requirement insures proper valve operation prior to burial and also will identify unexpected situations including valve design changes or valve substitutions at the project. IPPI cannot be held responsible for valve interference with the butterfly flange adapter or for any related excavation costs.

IPS or DIPS Butterfly Valve Spacers For Use With HDPE Flange Adpaters
(Dimensions in Inches)
As the butterfly valve wafer rotates, it will hit the ID of the standard Flange Adapter. Independent Pipe Products, Inc. can machine custom Flange Adapters to avoid using spacers and provide for full butterfly valve operating (see next page). Valve spacers are used to offset the standard HDPE flange face to provide for full wafer rotation, when customized flanges have not been ordered. Be sure to double check the standard spacer thickness is sufficient for the exact butterfly valve being used, by doing a simple dimensional layout.

For larger valve spacers the following information is needed: width of valve from face to face, diameter of butterfly wafer and the location of the butterfly wafer stem (center stem or otherwise). All non-stock fabricated fittings are produced to order and are noncancelable and nonreturnable. Hydrotesting for compliance with AWWA C906 fitting requirements add 15% (i.e., 1.15 multiplier).

The above requirement insures proper valve operation prior to burial and also will identify unexpected situations including valve design changes or valve substitutions at the project. IPPI cannot be held responsible for valve interference with the butterfly flange adapter or for any related excavation costs.

These blind flanges are ordinarily used for closure or night-capping of flanged pipes. They are NOT fully pressure rated. Without the use of a metal back up blind flange, the HDPE flange may leak between bolt-holes at moderate pressures.

Bolt Rings
U.S. Patent # 7,401,821
Designed Specifically for use with HDPE Flange Adapters* ASME / ANSI B16.5, B16.47Ser.A CL150 B16.1 CL125 AWWA C207 B,D & E
Design Information
Van Stone Style Flanges have been used for decades in the USA. The typical polyethylene flange adapter has a Van-Stone style flange with slip-on bolt-ring. Our Design-Flow Bolt Ring is engineered specifically for Polyethylene Flange Adapters. Design-Flow Bolt Rings meet the standard bolt circle dimensional specifications of ASME / ANSI B16.5 CL 150, B16.47 Ser. A CL 150, B16.1- CL 125; AWWA C207 - CL 150 / B, D & E. Design-Flow Bolt Rings are produced in ductile iron and stainless steel (Ductile Iron A536 65/ 45/12, 316 Stainless Steel A351-CF8M). Our ductile iron Bolt Rings are stocked with an oil based enamel painted surface (IPS sizes stocked in bright red, DIPS sizes stocked in aqua blue). Many more coating choices are available that provide superior cathodic protection depending on the specific needs of the project. Additional surface coating choices include epoxy based paints; fusion bonded epoxies; hot dip galvanizing and other electrostatically applied surface treatments. Our Design-Flow Bolt Ring is so unique in its novel design that it has earned U.S. Patent # 7,401,821 status based, in principle, on its strong, tough, ductile and constant sealing design. Its contoured cross-section enables ring deformation which provides a constant sealing force. Our Design-Flow Bolt Ring is stronger; being able to accept more bolt torque (sealing load) than other previous designs. At these higher bolt torques, rubber gaskets are not required, which results in more secure sealing and reduced assembly costs. Our Design-Flow Bolt Ring has a beveled bolt surface which is drawn into parallel with the flange face when the proper bolt torque is applied. This bolt ring deflection is more effective in placing the sealing force closer to the pipe OD and more uniformly distributing that higher force across the flange face. Unlike previous industry designs, Design-Flow Bolt Rings seal from the inside out ! Our Design-Flow Bolt Ring design places more metal in optimized locations to make the bolt ring stronger resulting in a shorter outer perimeter plane. Design-Flow Bolt Rings are designed for working pressure ratings ranging from 50 psi up to 275 psi in many sizes. Please consult this catalog sectional 1.3.B1 or our Customer Service Department for more information regarding our Design-Flow Bolt Rings. 1-800-499-6927

Flange assembly should be square, perpendicular, concentric and axially in contact with the mating flange, prior to applying sealing torque. Tighten bolts in an alternating star pattern in numerical order as shown in illustration below. Tighten bolts uniformly in even increments, raising the torque intensity in steps, uniform steps or levels are generally 20% increments of total torque value. Torque all bolts uniformly to the first level before progressing to the next higher level of uniform bolt torque. Hydro-test to insure no leaks exist, retighten as needed.

Technical Report : Bolt Torque Test On Design-Flow Bolt Rings & HDPE Flange Adapters
Technical Report: Bolt-Torque Tests on IPPI Bolt-Rings & HDPE Flange Adapters
The compressive sealing stress applied by the IPPI bolt rings onto the HDPE flange face through bolt torque, is targeted at 1100 psi initial interfacial pressure, before viscoelastic stress relaxation occurs. The bolt ring and HDPE flange assembly have been tested to evaluate effective sealing across a wide range of operational pressure with surge allowance, and over a wide range of thermal conditions. The threaded carbon steel or stainless steel bolts (or all-thread studs) are expected to be of SAE Grade 2 to SAE Grade 5 tensile strength. The bolts tested were reasonably clean, oiled and not rusted. Every flange assembly should be installed square, perpendicular, concentric and axially in contact with the mating flange, prior to applying sealing torque. The bolts were tightened in an alternating star pattern. The bolts were tightened uniformly in even increments, raising the torque intensity in steps, with all bolts torqued uniformly to the first level before progressing to the next higher level of uniform bolt torque. The IPPI thick face flanges and bolt rings were hydro-tested at the torque listed below, and proven to seal effectively. The 4 x WPR hydro-tests were conducted successfully on flat face, and serrated face, HDPE flange adapters without gaskets. The IPPI bolt rings have also been tested to a 25% higher maximum bolt torque than listed without bolt ring fracture; tested maximum torque was well above the useful sealing bolt torque.

PLEASE NOTE: Torque is an indirect indicator of tensile load in the bolt itself. With several variables involved in the assembly, bolting and flange sealing process; the bolt torque test values presented above were considered as a guideline only. For example, compare the compressive differences of a plastic to plastic connection verses a plastic to steel connection. It is the responsibility of the project engineer of record to establish the bolt torque and assembly requirements for each specific flange assembly design. A large torque wrench is specified.

Multistage pipe reducers connect pipes of measurably different diameters. Instead of using a 12" x 10 fused to a 10" x 8" fused to an 8"x 10 reducer assembly, we fabricate a custom 12"x 6 reducer as a single component. This greatly saves on part cost and fusion cost! Many gravity flow and drainage pipelines require a uniform line and grade. To achieve this, the engineers and designers specify eccentric reducers. This keeps the pipe invert at the same level or slope along the pipeline length. Based on the permutation and combination of possible diameters, eccentric reducers are quoted for each inquiry or project. These fittings are quite popular for gravity flow sewers with multiple lateral sewer inlets or outlets.

Some users want the maximum diameter opening, thinking that it will maximize the water volume throughput and minimize the pressure loss through the fitting. A detailed examination of the numbers reveals the following:
Using a portal outlet cutter hole diameter that is nominally 87% of the ID of the pipe main, a detailed examination of the pressure loss through the orifice of the cut hole was done. The results confirmed that the pressure loss was negligible, almost insignificant. The pressure loss was equal to about 3 diameters of extra pipe length. The pressure loss was less than 0.010 psi....1/100 th of one psi. A full copy of the detailed report is available upon request.
Using the cutter size range of up to 75% to 90% of the HDPE main pipe ID, the user can choose a cutter diameter that fits through the branch to provide good flow at minimum pressure loss and avoid tapping problems.
Note: When using line-size metal tapping sleeves, the cutter OD should be smaller, usually about 75% of the pipe main inside diameter to avoid cutting through the spring line of the HDPE pipe main and not allowing the removal of the HDPE pipe coupon. The cutter OD should not be as large as the ID of the HDPE pipe main so that when the coupon is removed, it will retract freely within the cutter.
In all cases, the cutter OD must be slightly smaller in diameter than the HDPE pipe-main ID!!

Fuse-A-Corp
(To Tap the Water-Main and connect the Service Tubing)
This Corporation-Stop valve has a successful 25 year history of leak free performance in water distribution service. This ball-valve unit eliminates the corrodable metal tapping-saddle on HDPE pipe. It becomes part of the water main itself via heat-fusion. The Fuse-A-Corp is saddle fused to the 2"* or larger HDPE water main using standard fusion procedures, providing a proven leak-free joint.
Working Pressure Rating (WPR): 200 psi Surge pressure tested beyond 1,250,000 cycles. CPEX Polypropylene ball valve with PE 3408 Base. Eliminates costly metal tapping saddles
Fuse-A-Corpsare available in sizes 1/2 through 2 for main sizes 2* and larger IPS or DIPS.
Service tubing connections are made with the following interchangeable adapters: Butt fusion adapter for IPS HDPE (included with kit to allow clamping with sidewall fusion machine for saddle fusion installation**) FIPT adapter (included with kit to allow mounting of purchasers tapping tool for live tap install) MIPT x Compression adapter (available to allow compression connection to IPS or CTS HDPE tubing - adapter to be used in conjunction with supplied FIPT adapter) Adapters are interchangeable by using the true union feature of the incorporated ball valve.
Note: Purchaser must determine that concave/convex heater plates are available to complete the saddle fusion.
*Fuse-A-Corps 1 and larger not recomended for main sizes smaller than 3 IPS.
Purchaser must indicate if using with copper tubing - these units will be supplied with additional stub out of PE pipe.
Ordering Information:
A. HDPE water main diameter and sizing (IPS or DIPS). B. PE Tubing size (CTS or IPS) if using compression option. Page 7 - 3

PVC Slip Joint Anchor Fittings IPS, DIPS, IPS To DIPS, DIPS To IPS Connects HDPE to PVC
Pressure Rated for DR Ordered (Dimension in Inches) The PVC pipe slip joints must be restrained against thermal contraction and pressure thrust separation with its resultant leakage. By using the wall-pipe and anchor-ring designs (which have been around a while) and by following the PPI recommendation to use a stiffener under gaskets, we now offer the restrained PVC-SJA Fitting. The fitting is inventoried in DR 11 and counter bored to DR 17 as orders are received.

Occasionally, it is convenient to connect HDPE pipe with a mechanical ring or clamp type device. These connections must have stiffeners under both the gasket and the clamp restrainer. The long-term apparent strength of HDPE is about 35,000 psi versus the short-term strength of over 100,000 psi. Thus, the long-term pipe stiffness to resist radial gasket loading is lower over time. The pipe creeps in compression. Creep is defined as the permanent deformation of an object subject to constant stress. As the gasket constantly presses on the pipe, the pipe becomes slightly smaller over time, thus reducing the gasket pressure and its ability to hold a seal. The pipe may even pull out due to contraction. Additionally, the radial gasket pressure causes the polyethylene pipe wall to indent, thus developing tensile stress on the pipe ID. High tensile stress in localized areas has been known to cause Environmental Stress Cracking in some HDPE pipes. It is the policy recommendation of The Plastic Pipe Institute that all polyethylene pipes, subject to radial gasket loads or external OD clamps, be supported by internal stiffeners. The stiffener pinches the HDPE pipe between itself and the gasket or clamp. The polyethylene pipe wall is now in compression between the two. Polyethylene pipe does not fail in compression - all of the molecules are being squeezed together. The stiffener changes the state of stress in the HDPE pipe from tension to compression. The stiffener must be under the gasket and clamp! Caution: The Stiffener and Clamp Ring should be sufficiently wide to develop a compressive stress in the range of 500 psi to 800 psi. Higher compressive stress will be dissipated by movement or deformation. Radial lug nuts or radial bolts penetrating into the HDPE pipe wall is not good for HDPE pipe and may potentially cause environmental stress cracking. Use one wide, serrated or knobby ID restrainer or a number of clamps, to keep the radial stress within HDPE bearing load capability. The project engineer should design this type joint to handle pressure end-thrust as well as thermal contraction. Call us for details.

The inspection tee is used on many transmission and distribution pipelines. It offers the owner an opening to the interior of the pipeline for the purpose of inspection or simple access for mechanical equipment or people when the pipeline is large in diameter. The KIT includes the native branch saddle, the low height flange adapter fused to the branch-saddle with the metal back up ring (captured in-between) and blind flange. The bolts are not included in the kit. The assembly is saddle-fused to a sufficient long section of pipe main to provide for field fusion. The following inspection tee kits are engineered. Reducing crosses use full-pressure rated massive-base branch-saddles. The permutations and combinations of equal and unequal reducing crosses is quite numerous (2" to 24" IPS & DIPS Outlets- by- 3" to 24" DIPS to 54" IPS pipe main). Call for a Quick Quote on the specific combination needed for the project. These reducing crosses are not normally a stocking item, but are made to order. While the tooling for every combination may not be immediately available, Independent Pipe Products can make the required tooling in a reasonable time frame in our own machine shop. Allow us to Quick Quote on your projects. We want to earn your business! End options are your choice of butt-end, flanged, DIMJA, reducer end, etc.

Commercial and sanitary landfills use leachate collection systems to comply with federal mandates to protect the water and the environment. The landfills need risers over some of these pipes. These riser shafts must have pipe continuously added to the riser as the lifts of garbage and soil cover increase in height. Flanged pipe spools are grabbed by the settlement of the garbage inducing vertical axial buckling of the riser pipe column. Riser shafts must be smooth on the OD to avoid vertical crushing! Vertical butt-fusion of the large diameter pipes (with its smooth OD) is virtually impossible. Hence, mechanical joining of the HDPE riser pipe is the answer! The landfill riser system is composed of three segments: the Base, the Riser-Segment and the Cap. All these pipe components are fabricated from ruggedized HDPE pipe with at least 46 psi pipe stiffness. Each segment hand-screws into the other using two men laborers. As the garbage level rises and the riser needs to be vertically extended, the debris cap is unscrewed and removed by hand. The new Riser-Segment is hand threaded into place and the debris cap is reinstalled by hand threading it back into position. The short-length and lightweight HDPE pipe combine to make this a very practical system! Call for a Quick Quote on the custom base needed for your landfill; add to it all the risers segments needed, and one debris-cap; and the landfill riser shaft is complete. The end user will want its engineer to do a structural analysis to verify adequacy of pipe for burial depth.

Ocean and river outfall pipelines need diffusers to dispense and distribute the effluent into the current so biological activity can consume the degradable debris. These large diameter pipe fabrications need to be engineered for constant pressure drop or constant velocity, self-cleaning velocity, minimum velocity and other parameters. Based on the design, a different diffuser is fabricated. There are many issues to be considered and incorporated into the design. Headers for pipe networks are important pipe fabrications. But the spacing between header openings and the reinforcement of those openings is critical. The tendon distance between portal openings must exceed a minimum distance determined by several factors. Call us to work with you and your customers on those header fabrications. Manifolds are needed for piping installations such as multi-pipe geothermal heat-pump systems. Proper design should be considered to insure even flow, so as not to starve any section of the piping network. The header design is critical to a balanced system! Independent Pipe Products, Inc. has a Professional Engineer and staff employed to work with the HDPE pipe distributors, engineering consultants and contractors to insure a successful project. Call us to assist on your next diffuser project.

Floats and pontoons are needed for many applications, such as dredging pipelines, sand & gravel pipes, water borne barges and platforms, etc. The float must be able to support the weight with appropriate positive buoyancy - not too high in the water, nor too low in the water. Independent Pipe Products has special, low-cost float pipe and end-caps available. The high buoyancy and low weight make these very practical. The low cost makes these HDPE pontoons economical. Float pipe is available in sizes 4" to 42". Float length can be from 4ft to 20ft long. To assure positive flotation, the floats are pressurized. Call for a Quick Quote on your next float or pontoon project.

Independent Pipe Products fabricates custom manholes and tanks for municipal and industrial applications, such as a sewer manhole, catch-basin, liquid chemical holding tank, etc. The types of tanks are quite diverse. Submit your drawings to us and Call for a Quick Quote. The current diameter size limit is 63" diameter. Length or height is not a problem as the tank / manhole can be assembled in sections. If you need guidance on the design of manholes or tanks, call us for our basic design guideline booklet. Because these fixtures are often large and cumbersome with many subcomponents, please allow a few weeks in the project schedule for construction and shipping. Allow us to quote on your next project - we want to earn your business.

Pipe spools are short lengths of pipe with an end fitting which allows it to be connected into the pipeline or process piping system. The end fitting may be a flange-adapter, a ductile-iron mechanical-joint anchor fitting, a grooved adapter, etc. Because of the permutation and combination of pipe diameters, pipe DR, pipe length and end fittings, it is not practical to list pricing for every possible spool. Standard fittings in sizes 24" and smaller diameter are routinely hydrotested to meet AWWA C901/C906 requirements due to the number of units and frequency of production.
Larger diameter fittings are ordered less frequently. The costs for blind-flanging a 24" to 54" tee for hydro testing is very expensive. The test costs are applied to the individual fitting required for the project. The testing cost is billed at cost per the following schedule. Testing cost are affected by the quantities of specific fittings to be tested. Call for a Quick Quote on large diameter fittings tested to AWWA C901/C906 requirements.

Note: IPPIs MJs incorporate a short nose design in order to work with most MJ butterfly valves, however it is recommended that specific valve information be supplied prior to ordering to insure proper clearance of the butterfly valve disc. MJ adapters should always be field tested for valve clearance before burial/final install. IPPI cannot be held responsible for valve interference with the MJ adapter . **Connections to PVC may require use of a D.I. solid sleeve (not included).
