What should Swimmy do?

Setting 11:15-12:00 Kindergarten ESL lesson. 8-10 students of high beginning to low intermediate level. This lesson is a follow-up to a previous lesson where the students read the book Swimmy for the first time. Laminated picture cards from the book (magnets on the back), blackboard or whiteboard, Swimmy book Procedures Warm Up Ask the students to remember what happened during the story Swimmy. Use the laminated pictures on the background to act out what the students say. As you recap the story, have the students repeat the vocabulary words from the story. Reread Reread the book to the class and have the students act out each of the parts. Stop on the page where Swimmy says We must THINK of something! Brainstorm Ask the class what else Swimmy and his friends could do to scare the big tuna. Have the students call out suggestions. 17-27 Group work Have the students split into groups of 3-4. (These could be preset groups set at the beginning of camp.) Tell the students to make up their own way to scare away the big tuna. Help the students pick different characters to play. Walk around and help each group as they brainstorm. Performances Student groups perform their new version of the story one by one for the rest of the class. After each group performance, ask the rest of the students what happened in the skit and have them recap. Discussion Ask the students to offer some comments and compliments to their fellow classmates about their performances Materials Laminated picture cards, blackboard Swimmy book
