What an ECE classroom looks and sounds like:

Worksheets should NOT be the primary activity. Emphasis on language and literacy development Classroom environment set up to encourage organization, collaboration and active learning Students work one on one with the teacher, in small groups, individually, in pairs and whole group throughout the day Students are not all doing the same thing at the same time for a long period of time Differentiation is used to meet the needs of all students Centers are used as a part of learning; not looked at as free time Teachers read books to students often, not just during whole group story time Student work is displayed around the room Music, art and movement is a part of the day Students are engaged in their learning and are happy to be at school Activities are developmentally appropriate and meaningful to students Students discussing, debating, exploring, questioning and answering Print-rich environment Diverse/cultural responsive materials Integrated curriculum Varied teaching strategies being used Use of formative assessment to guide teaching and learning Rules and schedules posted
