Chapter One

Dusk was setting off over the Yarra Ranges, turning the mountains into soft, purple spikes shooting out towards the sky. I was staring out my window, listening to the birds chirping in the tall fern trees until Mum interrupts thoughts Honey, Lucas is on the phone! called Stacey Brooks, Jennifer's mum. Coming! I replied, tearing down the stairs, my auburn hair flying all around me. I picked up the phone. My hands started to shake as her grip tightened on the phone. Hey, Lucas! How are you? questioned Jennifer, quivering. I'm fantastic, thanks. Um...are you free Friday night? asked the hesitant Lucas. Ah... yeah. Yes I am, Jennifer answered shortly. Good. Did you want to go to the movies? asked Lucas. Sure! See you then, ended Jennifer. They both hung up with no other words spoken, but both were very pleased, summing up with Jennifer making an enormous smile to herself. Friday finally arrived and Jennifer was very nervous. She drove down to Lilly Dale Cinemas where Lucas was texting something on his phone. Jennifer stopped for a moment to admire Lucas. His black hair partly covered his right eye, his brown, dark skin making up the whole of his complexion, his dark chocolate eyes were bright and wide with adventure. She knew straight off that Lucas was the one for her. Hi! Jennifer quavered as she hopped out of the car. Wow! You look stunning! Hey I was wondering if you would like to go back to my place? suggested Lucas. Sure, answered Jennifer making a shy smile. They took a stroll down Main Street and took a left turn down Willow Street. From her first glimpse, Jennifer instantly knew why it was called Willow Street. There was a tree line down both sides of the street, all the trees were willows. Their branches spread out evenly amongst each other, the bright green leaves slowly turning into Autumn colours and their big trunks as dark as an oak tree. It truly was a spectacular sight. Wow, Jennifer mumbled under her breath, This is breath-taking.

Lucas had nothing to say to it, he just nodded. They finally arrived at Lucas' house. To Jennifer, this was like a mansion compared to what she's been living in for nineteen years. Today is her twentieth birthday and she bought a one storey house closer to town. Lucas' house had marble stairs leading up to the front door and a well groomed garden in the front of the house. Lucas opened the door... SURPRISE! voices chorused. Oh my gosh! Did you plan this Lucas? exclaims the surprised Jennifer. Yes. But it was mostly Sammy and Tony, explains Lucas. Sammy and Tony have been best friends with Jennifer since primary school. Sammy and Tony are now engaged to each other. Tony! Sammy! You didn't have to plan this for me, Jennifer shouts over the blaring music and the sounds of laughter. They both waltzed over hand in hand, like they did nothing at all. Ah... yes we did, replied Tony quickly as Sammy pulled Jennifer someplace quiet. Sooo, do you like him? asked Sammy jumping up and down. Who? asked Jennifer, blushing till she was a bright, cherry red. Lucas, who else? Sammy replies. Oh Sammy, I adore him so much! Did he volunteer to ask me out and to even help with the party? Jennifer gave in towards Sammy reluctantly. Yes he did. He's really into you Jen, replies Sammy softly. Jennifer just blushed and turned away. Hey Jennifer! Over here! called Gilbert Shaw. Jennifer bounded over as Gilbert flicked his golden fringe off his sapphire eyes. Jennifer, do you like the party? queries Gilbert gazing at her. Yes, very much indeed Gilbert, answered Jennifer politely. Look Jen, I'm not sure how to put this so I'm going to just say it. Will you go out with me? pleaded Gilbert. Gilbert you're an amazing guy but I'm into someone else, her eyes surveyed the room until they automatically landed on Lucas, My place is with Lucas.

There was an awkward silence between the two. Jennifer felt very uncomfortable at this moment but luckily Tony asked her to dance. She smiled at Gilbert and took his hand and danced away. The night was a massive hit, until a blood curdling scream cut through the night like a rusty knife through butter. Immediately the music stopped and eyes flew towards the staircase. Everyone was still as a statue like they were suddenly made out of stone. Nobody moved until Gilbert came rushing down the creaky stairs. His face was a ghastly white. Lucas, you might want to see this, said Gilbert. Jennifer, Lucas, Tony and Sammy followed Gilbert up the stair case and into a spare room off the bathroom suite. Inside the room was a body. A lifeless, motionless corpse who had been stabbed in the neck and back fifteen times. All five faces turned to a sickly white, but Jennifer was by the body holding the hand and crying. Nobody knew why but it soon registered in their minds. The victim of this accident was Tom Tuck. Jennifer's cousin. She didn't even know he was invited. Oh Tom, she whimpered into Tony's open arms. Someone called the emergency services when they told everyone the news. There was a murmur along the crowd and a few people sobbing. When the police arrived, everyone evacuated onto the front porch, shivering, crying, talking and grieving over the loss of a great friend. Everyone was interviewed by a pair of detectives. By the time everyone had finished being interviewed, everyone was instructed to go home and rest and that they will be spoken to tomorrow. A week after the tragic event was Tom's memorial service. No one knew what to do without Tom there. Jennifer and the whole of the family made a speech at the service. It was such a long day and everyone was exhausted. Mandy, Tom's Mum, still could not believe he had gone and she ended up skipping the burial. Jennifer, I'm so sorry for your loss, whispered Gilbert, hugging Jennifer. Thanks, she sobbed. Everyone expressed their condolences to Jennifer and the family, and gave them their best wishes. Sammy even offered for Jennifer to stay at her place that night but Jennifer kindly declined the offer and hopped into her car in the car park outside the cemetery. She sat in her car staring out across the graves and lush green grass. Oak trees sat around the fence line and scattered around the park were flower beds; bright pink geraniums, yellow

roses blooming from the moist brown flower beds. It was a beautiful sight and she knew Tom would love where he was buried.

I wonder where Tom is now? she asked herself.

She finally managed to get home after almost colliding with a chicken truck and continuous sobs so she had to pull over otherwise her eyes would cloud over and she could not see the road ahead of her. She took a moment in her car to relax and to accept that Tom was gone. A few minutes passed of absolute silence before she took a step out of her car, her hands and legs were all shaky as she walked down her path very slowly to avoid falling. As Jennifer reached for her keys in her handbag her eyes caught something on the door, she stopped and looked at the door. A note was taped to the door covered in blood. In inky black letters they spelled out a message: 'IT'S YOUR FAULT TOM IS DEAD BUT WATCH OUT, SAMMY IS NEXT' Jennifer dropped her keys and collapsed to the stone pavement. Froth started to form around her mouth and she started to tremble. Jennifer went into a seizure.

Chapter 2
Jennifer woke up in a hospital room, dazed. Doctors were outside the windows of the hospital room she lay in. A nurse walked through the door with a tray. The tray contained food and Jennifer was very glad because she was ravenous. The nurse assisted her to sit up properly to eat her food. She lay the tray on the food table which swung across the bed and Jennifer dug into her food as the nurse checked the tubes pouring out of Jennifer's arms containing a silver liquid. How are you feeling uh... Miss Jennifer? she asked looking at her clipboard. A little dazed but other than that I'm just ravenous Jennifer answered. Mmmmm... well this shall do you some good, giggled the nurse still staring at her list. May I ask what happened? asked Jennifer placing her knife and fork across her plate gently. You had a seizure and one of your friends found you on the pavement and a note on your door, replied the nurse finally looking up at Jennifer, The police have been inspecting the note and what was written on it, but I don't have permission to do so. Suddenly it all came rushing back to Jennifer how she saw the note and when she went into a seizure but nothing else came to mind. Have any of my friends come to see me? Jennifer asked watching the nurse inspect everything for the final time. None so far but some people have called, the nurse mumbled. Do my parents know what happened? Jennifer's eyes tried to gain the nurse's gaze. No, but it has only been a few hours, the nurse looked away from her clipboard. Jennifer tried to close her eyes and fall asleep as the nurse walked out the door and turned off the lights. Jennifer felt like as if she had only been asleep for a split second when Sammy and Tony were arranging some flowers on a shelf. Hey, Jennifer said quietly. Oh my god, Jennifer! I'm so sorry we couldn't come earlier, we only heard an hour ago, Sammy answered quickly hugging Jennifer tightly.

Wait, you didn't find me? said the confused Jennifer. No, Tony replied. I did, All eyes flew to the door and in walked Lucas with a bouquet of flowers in one hand and heart chocolates in the other. He was wearing a checkered shirt unbuttoned with a white singlet underneath, with denim board shorts. It looked like he'd just been out for a swim in the river. How did you find me? asked Jennifer. You left something at the funeral so I thought Id bring it back for you. I found you on the pavement so I dialled for the ambulance, he said casually moving over. He gave Jennifer a hug and a quick but friendly kiss on the forehead. Jennifer blushed as the warm lips brushed her forehead and a broad smile instantly swept upon her face. Sammy stared at her in bewilderment as the boys went off to grab a coffee for everyone. Jennifer closed her eyes and imagined the kiss upon her her forehead once more before opening them and talked to Sammy. What were you doing before you heard about the accident? Jennifer said. Tony and I were making our wedding arrangements and we were looking for a cake down in Melbourne so we had to race up here as quickly as we were informed. I'm really sorry Jen! Sammy came up to Jennifer and squeezed her tightly as she let out a great sigh. It's alright Sammy, Jennifer said softly, I'm just glad you're alive! WHAT? gasped Sammy in disbelief. On the note I found on my door, it said something about it's your fault Tom is dead and you are next Sammy, Jennifer answered. Sammy calmed down and looked at Jennifer with soft eyes. Oh, she whispered. Finally what seemed like forever, the boys came back with the coffees and banana bread for everyone. Sammy and Jennifer said nothing about what was on the note and what was said before, but the boys suspected something because of the sudden tension in the room. What's going on in here? queried Tony placing the coffees down on a table.

Nothing, why do you ask? the two girls chorused. Okay, Tony held up his hands up in defense, and the girls chuckled. Tony and Sammy had to say good bye because some family were coming over from Adelaide and they wanted to see the couple before their big day of the wedding a few weeks away, but Lucas stayed behind with Jennifer and they talked until a nurse came in and told them that visiting times are over for the day. Lucas was about to retrieve from the hospital bed when Jennifer snatched his hand. She couldn't take it anymore. Kiss...me, she whispered closing her eyes still grasping on to his hand. Lucas quietly bent down next to her and kissed her. His lips felt warm and soft against Jennifer's dry lips. The kiss took a long time and finally Lucas pulled away and stared at the sleeping Jennifer and smiled to himself. He picked up his coat and waltzed off down towards the hospital exit. Jennifer awoke to sun streaming through the window to her left. She remembered the kiss from last night and decided to have a shower to make herself more appealing. She brushed her teeth and combed hair and changed into a new hospital gown. She wished she could get out of this terrible room, she hated being cooped up in a small space without no fresh air. This morning, Jennifer had a new nurse who brought her breakfast dish and helped her sit up and checked everything was okay. Jennifer didn't know if she liked this new intruder of her room but she was a very timid and small lady with emerald eyes and auburn shoulder length hair which gleamed in the hospital room light. She was a very pretty woman and Jennifer wanted to ask her what her name was but she had already scurried out of the room to leave Jennifer to stare after her in amazement. An hour or so passed before her first visitor came for the day. It was her parents, who always fussed over her and made things seem bigger than what they actually are. Honey! I can't believe what has happened! Are you okay? Her mother rushed over and checked her forehead and fluffed her pillows and after a few minutes of organising the place she kissed her daughter on the cheek and smiled at her. We brought some night clothes from home for you to change into, said her dad with a big duffel bag. Thanks Daddy! Jennifer smiled and pointed towards a spot at the other end of the room, gesturing for her father to place the duffle bag. He crept up to Jennifer and gave her a kiss and held her hand.

I think you are going to be discharged sometime tomorrow sweetie, he smiled and squeezed her hand. Oh, I doubt that Craig! gasped Stacey, Jennifer's mum. MUM! shrieked Jennifer, staring at her mother with wild, desperate eyes. She's just kidding, honey, Craig shot a look across the room at Stacey who shrugged her shoulders. They didn't do much after that and there were long awkward moments where no one did anything. Luckily Sammy dropped by and broke the tension between the family. Jennifer's family did not get on very well. It was just that her mum irritated Jennifer so much, she sometimes would scream at her friends, offloading on them and making them scream back and Jennifer ended up crying and her friends would comfort her on the other side of the phone. Her mum and dad got up to leave after a chat with Sammy and said their goodbyes to their daughter. How was last night with Lucas, Jen? asked Sammy sprucing up some flowers. Um, it was good. Normal even, Jennifer hesitated. Something happened didn't it? demanded Sammy. No, nothing happened at all, Jennifer replied. To be honest she wasn't sure if she was allowed to tell. Well, I better get going to work, Sammy sighed. Okay, thanks for dropping by! Jennifer called after her, as Sammy left the room. Jennifer forgot all about the note and what Sammy's life is in and focused just on Lucas and her the night before; closing her eyes and feeling the warmth of his chest and neck and his soft lips pressing against her own made her feel all warm and fuzzy inside again. She sighed and smiled and closed her eyes again and fell into a deep sleep. When she awoke there was a lean brown face staring down at her with soft eyes holding her hand. It was Lucas. I thought you would never come and see me again! cried Jennifer, propping herself up on her elbows quickly and trying to hug Lucas in one swift movement. Why would you think that? Lucas moved in towards her and pushed her gently back down in the bed and smiled. Just... I thought... you would never come and see me again after what happened last night, confessed Jennifer. She really thought she would never see him again. That's absurd! I loved what happened last night and I wanted to see you again so badly that I didn't sleep a

wink. Look, Jennifer... I love you, sweet Lucas confessed, leaning closer towards Jennifer still. Jennifer could not believe what she was hearing. This was a miracle! She could not wait to say her feelings for him, but something stopped her. In the distance she could hear the news and she quickly switched her television on to Nine News. Just coming in, Samantha Ronald has been abducted and taken away from her work. The police have been inspecting the crime scene and are tracking down the kidnapper. Witnesses say they have not seen the kidnapper's face, so no more details will follow at this point, a Nine News reporter read aloud outside the Beechworth Bakery. I have to get out of here! I need to find Sammy, Lucas! Will you help me to discharge myself? Jennifer pleaded. Yeah sure. Let's go, Lucas said. Lucas helped Jennifer out of her bed and grabbed her clothes, but they decided to leave all the gifts in the hospital room. They ran around corners and down stairwells until they found the Discharge Lounge. The line to discharge was so long that it would take almost three hours just to get to the front of the line. Come on! We'll just run away, they can't arrest us. Are you coming? Lucas reached out a hand and looked at Jennifer with his deep eyes. She willingly took his hand and they ran past the Coffee Lounge, and finally Lucas skidded to the right and out past two sliding glass doors. Jennifer did not expect the sudden fresh air upon her face and she inhaled a deep breath of flowers and mildew. The sun felt so nice on her back and made her feel warm and fuzzy once more. They dodged people who were just standing in the middle of the path and leaped over flower beds. The car park seemed miles away to Jennifer. Luckily, Lucas parked somewhere closer than the car park. They took a sharp turn to the left and Lucas stopped abruptly, rummaging through his pockets for his keys. Aha! Hear they are! exclaimed Lucas, unlocking the door and throwing the bags in the back of his Mazda and swinging the passenger door wide open and ran around the other side. They buckled their seat belts and Lucas put the car into first gear and sped off down the road. Whoa! This car is fast! giggled Jennifer holding to the sides of her seat. I know. But if you want to find Sammy we need to be quick, replied Lucas turning the wheel swiftly to the

left. Do you have your phone on you? asked Jennifer. Um, yeah I do. It's in my front jeans pocket, gestured Lucas, patting at his jean pocket quickly. Can I use it? asked Jennifer still grasping the seat, her knuckles turning white. Yeah sure, replied Lucas, eyes on the road. Jennifer felt really weird reaching into his front pocket but she pushed herself. After all, they did kiss. She slid her hand into the slim pocket of Lucas jeans and grasped around the phone and she pulled her hand out. She smiled. She dialled Tony's phone number. Brrriingggg! Brrriingggg! 'PICK UP!' screamed Jennifer to herself inside her head. Hello? Tony! Have you heard about Sammy? asked Jennifer. I'm with the police now. How do you know about Sammy? asked the concerned Tony. I heard on the news and I'm on my way now with Lucas, replied Jennifer. Alright... bye Jen! hesitated Tony. They hung up and Jennifer placed the phone back in Lucas pocket. She forgot the world and looked at Lucas. She could not stop thinking about him. She was desperately in love with him. She was about to say her feelings, but again she was interrupted by the sound of sirens whirring and T.V reporters shouting over the commotion on the street.. Jennifer straight away picked Tony out from the crowd and leaped out of the car and ran straight in the direction of Tony shouting his name above all the noise and movement. Tony! Jennifer panted collapsing into his arms. Thank you so much for coming! Everyone else is here. Jennifer I'm really scared for... Tony got interrupted by the sound of screaming and the shuffling of feet. Jennifer, Tony and Lucas turned their heads towards a big screen set in the middle of Town Square. Jennifer peered hard at the screen until she realised what was happening. Her mouth dropped right open. She was gobsmacked. On the T.V, there was a clip of Sammy sitting in a rusty, metal chair with arm links to hold down her arms. She was in an old building, a red velvet curtain behind her. Sammy had a rag in her mouth to stop her cries of help; her hair was tangled and messy, her

clothes torn and smothered in blood. Finally someone ripped the rag from her mouth and she screamed and squirmed. She tried to call out but a leather gloved hand covered her mouth as a knife was pulled from their back pocket. This kidnapper was attempting to slit her wrists bit by bit. Something about this place seemed familiar and Jennifer puzzled over it. It came rushing at her like a freight train colliding with a stone wall. Tony, come with me now, Jennifer murmured quietly tugging at Tony's sleeve. ARE YOU NUTS? Jennifer my wife to - be is being tortured. I want to see my wife before she... dies, he yelled at Jennifer, his eyes blazing with fury but tears started to form around his eyes. Look, Tony I know you want to see your last glimpses of Sammy but I know where she is! Sammy was whispering furiously to Tony. Lucas saw what was going on and nodded in approval to Jennifer's idea behind her back. Tony gave in and followed Jennifer to the Mazda. Step on it Lucas. Take us to the old play house building quickly, mumbled Jennifer. Lucas pulled out of the park quickly and fluently, raced down Main Street. They took a violent left hand turn down by The Lillydale Bakery on Mauving Street down near the river. The oak trees were standing tall and proud, the sun enhancing the orange and yellow leaves of Autumn. The sun was starting to set off over the Yarra Ranges and the birds were settling down after their evening calls. Jennifer was off in her own little world but Lucas stepped on the brakes sharply, snapping Jennifer back to reality. What are we doing here Jennifer? asked Tony stumped. This is where Sammy is being tortured, explains Jennifer just as a piercing shriek cut through the silent air. Call the police and ambulance now! Jennifer started to run off towards the battered, run down play house with Tony on her heels. Jennifer waggled at the front door handle but it wouldn't budge, Tony tried the knob too but it still wouldn't give way. Jennifer used her shoulder and ran at the door as another scream filled the air. Tony saw what Jennifer was doing and joined in, the door fell down and they ran inside. It didn't look like the old play house. It looked like an industrial building, it was basically a massive shed with little compartments which Jennifer thought must be the stage rooms. Planks of wood and steel pipes covered the floor, making it very hard to creep along. HELP! PLEASE SOMEONE HEL... the cry for help was cut off like it was being muted. This way! hissed Tony, pointing towards a small door.

Jennifer trailed Tony through all the planks of wood and steel pipes trying not to make a sound. For some reason Jennifer started to hunch over like someone was pushing her, like carrying weights on her back. She turned her head around expecting to see something but nothing appeared to be there. Tony, however was almost squatting. 'Interesting,' thought Jennifer. Tony tried the door knob of the tiny door and thankfully this time it opened. The little door had rusty hinges and scratch marks down the sides. This must be the room where Tony's wife to be was being tortured. Jennifer could feel the tension and anger from Tony but she didn't care. She nudged Tony through the door way and she followed. Her back got caught on a nail and she sent out a stifled cry. Tony turned around and stared at her, then helped her through. Jennifer rubbed her back as Tony handed her a tissue to wipe her eyes. Thanks, said Jennifer. They were walking on a catwalk this time with big cardboard sheets covering the sides so they couldn't see over it. Jennifer tried to stand up to take a peek but she wish hadn't. Below the cat walk was a stage with the curtains drawn across. Jennifer had been in this stage when she was a little girl. On the stage was a chair with a small, hunched over with fear figure. This must be Sammy. Next to the figure was a person dressed in black with brown leather gloves who held a dentist tool which rips out teeth. The person in black pried open the victims mouth as the victim cried out. The dentist tool was pushed into their mouth and all you could hear was a ripping sound as blood spurted out across the floor. After the tooth was pulled out, the person in black stared at it, twirling the tooth around in their gloved fingers. The victim had perspiration on their forehead but they were also shivering. Jennifer quickly knelt down behind the cardboard sheets and whispered to Tony. Tony nodded and decided to walk across the floor boards but he knocked a can of paint which fell to the floor. Tony had been spotted.

Chapter 3
The 'Person In Black' looked up at the catwalk but everything was still. The person walked up the flight of stairs towards the catwalk. Tony and Jennifer stayed like statues, not moving a muscle. The footsteps were becoming louder by the second. Jennifer finally dared to move. She poked Tony who instantly turned his head quickly. Jennifer hissed at him, I'll move backwards towards the small door and you back up real slow, then we make a break for it, Tony nodded and started to shuffle backwards trying to dodge piles of wood and the steel pipes which would suddenly appear with out warning. Jennifer however was already at the small door trying to back her way out of it still keeping an eye on Tony making sure he was alright. The ' Person In Black' turned to the left on the catwalk which turned straight at Tony. The 'Person In Black' saw Tony but did not rush at him. Jennifer had made it through the small door and was trying to tell Tony to back up a little faster. Tony nor Jennifer saw the 'Person In Black' approaching Tony but Jennifer could sense that something wasn't right. Meanwhile, Lucas was calling the police who still hadn't picked up their phones and he was starting to get worried. 'Where ARE they?' thought Lucas starting to panic. For the tenth time, Emergency Services hung up on Lucas, so, Lucas decided to venture into the abandoned building to find Jennifer and Tony. Jennifer was trying to hurry up Tony who just kept on edging backwards bit by bit not rushing at all. Unexpectedly Jennifer felt a cold finger tap on her back. She lashed her leg out behind her and turned around as quick as lightning and pounced on the person behind her and sat on them. Hey! It's just me! It's alright, gasped Lucas holding his hands up in surrender. Sorry, Jennifer said as she climbed off Lucas. Jennifer crouched back to the little door and peered through. She couldn't see anything except for Tony. Lucas crouched up behind her and peered through the door too.

Who's that in front of Tony? asked Lucas pointing to something. What? Jennifer peered harder through the door and finally she spotted the ' Person In Black'. Tony! Tony! Hurry up. The murderer is right there! whispered Jennifer. Tony looked straight in front of him and finally saw the ' Person In Black'. He started backing up faster but the murderer strode faster and faster. Jennifer put her arm out waiting to drag Tony in, but the 'Person In Black' was a lot faster than what she thought. Tony was grabbed by the collar of his shirt and than kicked in the head and dragged down stairs and plonked in another chair opposite where the other victim sat. The victim stifled a cry as the victim realised who Tony was. It was Sammy. This was the Sammy who was getting married and going to work on a fine Tuesday when this psychopath captured her and tortured her. Jennifer waddled through the tiny door with out consulting Lucas what she was doing. Jennifer was back on the catwalk but she didn't go the same way as last time. Instead she went to the right where all the sand bags and ropes were to pull up the curtains. Lucas didn't know what he was meant to do so he followed her. Do you have a pocket knife with you? she asked picking out the right rope. Jennifer has been working with a drama club who does plays and she's part of the backstage crew. Yep, Lucas reached into his back pocket and pulled out a black leather pouch. He pulled out the pocket knife which was bright red and all the blades were shining brightly. Perfect, whispered Jennifer putting one of her fingers up and down the blade. Did you need help with cutting the rope? asked Lucas watching Jennifer cut the rope. Nah, I'm fine, answered Jennifer sawing backwards and forwards on the rope. It was very tough rope for this knife. Lucas stood up on the catwalk to see what was happening down below and was astonished. Tony was sitting in a chair identical to the one Sammy was sitting in, blood was all over the floor of the stage and a camera was set right in the middle filming it all. There was a table in the middle as well, teasing the couple who were sitting opposite each other, filled with knives, scissors and hospital and dental tools. This was some psychopath. Done, sighed Jennifer as she pushed the pocket knife blade back into it's little compartment. What are you going to do now? asked Lucas holding the rope while Jennifer unlocked another blade on his

pocket knife. We are going to swing down there and try and kick that person and save Tony and Sammy, explained Jennifer placing the knife in her mouth. Jennifer grabbed on to the rope and looked at Lucas who reached for a spot over the top of Jennifer. Since that Lucas was taller it was easier for them to get a good grasp. They took a step back on to a crate and held on tight. We need to get that psychopath while they are torturing someone and then we swing. Remember to kick your feet up over the cardboard sheets. Okay? whispered Jennifer. Yep. Would you like me to hold the knife? asked Lucas. Jennifer handed the knife to him and started to shift her weight back and forth. One...two...three! They flew off the crate and just made it over the catwalk safety rails. The wind rushed through Jennifer's hair as she got her foot ready to kick, Lucas was brandishing the knife about waiting for the target. Luckily the rope swung swiftly and quietly. They came close behind the 'Person In Black's' back but they turned around right as a foot was approaching their face. Jennifer struck out getting them square in the face and leaped off the rope, rushing over to Sammy who was unconscious. Her injuries were severe. She looked at the camera and yelled out the address. She hoped the police would come soon. She tried to pry open the arm links over Sammy's arm with a metal crowbar. They snapped open with such force that tiny shards scattered every where. Jennifer shook Sammy. Sammy came back to reality, startled to see Jennifer but went with it. Lucas was in a brawl with the

'Person In Black' and they were fighting and punching. The rope was still swinging but none of them cared
except for the psychopath who grabbed the rope and climbed up it as they kicked off the ground making the rope swing once more and coming back at Lucas and striking him in the face with a boot. THUD! The psychopath climbed up the rope like a cat and leaped on to the catwalk. Lucas was trying to sit up but he couldn't. He called out to Jennifer to quickly unlock Tony and get them to lie down on the ground. But it was too late. The psychopath brandished a gun and took a shot at Sammy. Sammy fell to the ground motionless, blood pouring from everywhere. The gun shot went straight through her head. She would've probably lived longer if she didn't fall causing head trauma which made her die instantly. That was the end of Sammy. Sammy

Ronald, a friend, a wife, a daughter and a sister is gone. Tony rushed to her side ignoring the agonising pain throbbing from half of his calf torn off. Sammy! No it can't be Sammy, it can't be! Jennifer this can't be happening. Jennifer? Jennifer help her! She's dying and you're not doing anything! Oh Sammy! cried Tony hugging his lost wife to be. Tony... Sammy is dead. There is nothing we can do it about it now. I'm really sorry, Jennifer hugged her grieving friend and stayed with him until Emergency Services arrived wrapping Sammy up in a black bag. Again they had to answer many questions but they had no answers. Lucas, can you describe the murderer for me? asked a forensic scientist from the AFP or know as the Australian Federal Police. Sorry I didn't see them but they were dressed in black with brown leather gloves. That's all I can describe, answered Lucas. It was a long night summing up with Lucas and Tony treated in Emergency. Tony had to stay the night due to his calf torn off, his knee cap broken and some molars which were ripped out, but fortunately, Lucas was a bit more lucky. He only suffered a few broken fingers and a nice punch to his face. That was all and he was able to go home. Do you have anywhere to go Lucas? asked Jennifer as they were walking out of the hospital. I don't know. But I can't drive that's for sure, he gazed at his hand as his right eye played up by weeping. That looks like it really hurts. I can drive you home if you want, offered Jennifer. Thanks so much Jen! Lucas hugged Jennifer and started to walk off to his shiny Mazda. Lucas handed Jennifer the keys and jumped into the passenger seat as Jennifer turned on the radio station. The report on Samantha Ronald is confirmed. Samantha died tonight after being tortured at the old Play House as her friends tried to rescue her. It was a dramatic death and their will be a public memorial and march for this brave woman, a Nine News reporter informed all the people in Lillydale. Great. First I witness the tragic death of my friend and then news reporters tell everyone about it, grumbled Jennifer shaking her head in disapproval. There was a long silence before Lucas blurted out something which surprised Jennifer.

Jennifer, do you love...me?! Lucas asked, his good hand trembling. Jennifer swerved across two lanes of traffic into an emergency stop lane. Who cares if they got caught in an emergency lane. This WAS an emergency and it needed to be solved quick. I...of course...yes I do...I Jennifer couldn't stand the pressure on herself that she stammered and started sweating. Jennifer I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to put you on the spot. I don't know what came over me, explained Lucas. Lucas, I asked you to kiss me in that hospital room. You don't think I love you? I can't stand not being around you and it's so agonising when you leave! I really love you Lucas. I would do anything for you no matter what shape I'm in, whispered Jennifer. Lucas leaned in towards Jennifer and grabbed her hand. They stared into each others eyes for what seemed like eternity before they heard sirens whirring in the distance and the grasp on each others hand loosened. Jennifer put down her window and sucked in the warm air, the smell of fresh honey and nectar. She thought the police car was coming for them to give them a ticket but the car raced by them making the car waddle from side to side. Whoa! Something is going on down there, said Jennifer. Looks like something is going and it's not going to be very pretty, Lucas commented flicking back his short black fringe. Jennifer pulled out of the emergency lane and into head on traffic. The police car hadn't gone that far, it's sirens still whirring in the distance, honking it's horns demanding that cars move out of the way. 'Stupid people who don't move out of the way for a police car,' Jennifer thought frustratedly. Stupid! screamed Jennifer aloud. What? asked Lucas, staring at Jennifer with his big adventurous eyes. Sorry. I wasn't yelling at you it's just people who don't move out of the bloody way for any Emergency Service mobiles. So frustrating at times, explained Jennifer shaking her head in disbelief. I know. It's getting really bad isn't it? Lucas commented. Finally people started giving way to the police car and the sirens started to fade away slowly. But even as they left, the sirens kept on whirring around in Jennifer's head. It was almost like it was pounding at the insides of her head and suddenly a stab in her gut told her that it was something bad. It wasn't someone's pain or regret.

Jennifer stepped on the acceleration and swerved in and out of the traffic. Jennifer didn't bother to tell Lucas about the stab like pain in her gut, but Lucas knew something was awfully wrong. He insisted on staying and Jennifer gave into him, no one could resist his beautiful eyes and you're even more vulnerable towards him when Lucas is badly injured. Eventually Jennifer and Lucas reached Jennifer's parents home. It was a nice little cottage with it's slated roof and the petite front garden covered in roses of vibrant colours and tall gumtrees swaying over head. A white picket fence surrounded the garden and the house, but it was hidden by lush hedges which made the cottage feel like a cage a nice one though. Jennifer stepped through the gate and held it open for Lucas. The green grass which was the bed for the roses had been trampled on and the roses had little specks of blood on them. Something was definitely out of order. Jennifer's stride quickened as she reached the front door. The latch was broken but the door was locked.

'Where is that stupid dog?' wandered Jennifer as she rummaged through her key chain to find her
parents key. Aha! I found it! Jennifer held up a pair of keys shaking them at Lucas. CLICK! The door swung right open making a ear bleeding screech. That was very unusual for this well oiled door. A faint sound caught her ears. It was like a whimper...or is it a whine? Jennifer could not tell but she crept over to the lounge room. Two lounge suites in dark brown covered the front wall and one ten metres from a wide window which looked out on to the front garden. A white foot rest was place in the middle of the two couches light and dark brown leaf patterns spread across the whole of the foot rest. But something stopped Jennifer in her tracks. Pools of blood were scattered everywhere and the whimper or whine became louder. She dropped her head to gaze at her feet. A ball of golden fluff lay at her feet, scarcely breathing. Blood seeping through the golden fur and spilling out on to the carpet was a disturbing sight to witness. It was their 'Guard Dog', Molly. Jennifer knelt down beside the dog and stripped her jacket off and wrapped the green jacket around the stab wound in the dog's chest. Molly was going to be gone very soon. A hand was placed on her shoulder gently and Jennifer started to weep. After a while once Molly's breathing was barely audible Jennifer wiped her eyes and stretched her aching legs and searched for a new clue, but expecting the worst. She tip toed into the kitchen and excavated the black, shiny bench. The bench had no DNA on it like it had been professionally removed and

Jennifer knew who that one person was. Gilbert Shaw.

Chapter 4
It all made sense now. Everything pointed into Gilbert's direction. The first murder he was upstairs and 'claimed' to be in the toilet, he was also taking acting courses to achieve his dream to become a professional actor. The second victim Jennifer never knew how well Gilbert could torture someone but the brown leather gloves he wore to a party a few months ago and the third mystery is that Gilbert only knows where the kitchen knives are after a night at her parents place. But what was Gilbert's motive? What did Jennifer do to hurt his feelings? Nothing came to mind but all that Jennifer was concerned about was finding her parents. Their car was out but no one knew where the key for that was but yet Gilbert's dad worked with cars. All the evidence points towards him period. Lucas dialled the police as Jennifer scavenged the house one more time before waiting for the police. Miraculously Molly was still breathing, her chest slowly rising then falling, up, down, up, down. Jennifer came across her parents bedroom and looked inside all the draws. There was a diary. A leather bound diary the colour beginning to fade but still in amazing condition. Dust covered the writing on the outside of the diary so Jennifer puffed a little to remove the dust. On the front of the diary in bold gold letters was the name Stacey Brooks. It was Jennifer's mum's diary. Jennifer flicked through the pages carefully not to rip them, the pages were yellow and had ink stains dotted all over the place. Jennifer opened up to the last entry it was a crisp white colour unlike all the rest. It was coincidental that Stacey had written a page just for Jennifer that day.

' To my dear Jennifer, I don't have long but I need you when you find this diary to go to the Black Spur Inn. That's where this man is taking your dad and I. Jennifer if I don't make it I just want to say I love you so very much. This man is going to murder us. Jennifer, HURRY!'
The diary entry stopped abruptly as if it was interrupted by something or someone.

Lucas! Lucas, we need to get to the Black Spur Inn. I know where my parents have been taken. I also know who the murderer is, Jennifer ran past Lucas and grabbed his shirt and Lucas was pulled forward dodging sharp corners and door frames. Jennifer jumped into the car and was starting to pull out of the driveway while Lucas was trying to hop inside with out breaking another bone. He slammed the car door shut just before a big fern tree with long limbs stretched out to rake the door. He made it just in time. Jennifer got on to the police as she swerved pass birds and pot holes and demanded the police force to just go to the Black Spur Inn. Lucas tried to grasp on to the side of the door to stop from toppling on to Jennifer, who was steering furiously down the windy country road. After about forty minutes the shiny Mazda was stripped of it's shininess and was replaced by dirt and muck once arriving at the Black Spur Inn. The inn was beautiful, one might call it old fashioned with all it's 80's curtains and jukebox outside with spiderwebs sprawled over the top of what once was a bright, loud machine but was replaced with all the new technology. Jennifer had an obsession with old antiques and was depressed. How could someone waste away something that could have been history? Jennifer could not think of one reason to get rid of that antique. There was not one single thing. Lucas slammed the car door shut disturbing Jennifer in her day dream and bringing her back to reality. She needed to find her parents. Lucas was surveying the car park looking for any police cars but none had arrived. The sun was blazing down on his back forcing him to strip off his jumper and roll up his jeans into a pair of shorts, the air was still with no whiff of air circulation making the whole atmosphere so dry and steamy. Lucas could not stand the heat any more which resulted in him hastening into the inn and collapsing on to a chair which just happened to be Gilbert's lap. Lucas didn't care or know until Jennifer came waltzing in her mouth agape at the awkward sight her eyes feasted upon. She stifled a laugh but then realised that it was very inappropriate because the person Lucas was sitting on was Gilbert. She walked over indulging the cool air and sat down next to Lucas on Gilbert. Hey, how ya going? What would you like? asked the bartender drying a glass off looking at Jennifer. I'm good thanks, um... do you have any Lemon Lime Bitters? replied Jennifer. Sure! Coming right up! the bartender smiled and placed the dry glass down on the counter.

Lucas was still on Gilbert his head in his hands taking deep breaths. Jennifer watched Lucas intently, his chest rising and falling in a steady pace. He was so handsome in a pub. Hey Gilbert! Why didn't you come to the interviews for Sammy's death? Jennifer tried to gain Gilbert's attention as well as alerting Lucas. Oh, hi Jennifer! I didn't see you there underneath all that filth and dirt and this clump of person on my lap, Gilbert let out a little chuckle and shifted his knee to awake the exhausted Lucas who happened to be sleeping all this time. Lucas quickly jumped off Gilbert and offered his hand for a manly shake in exchange for his jumping on Gilbert. Gilbert took the offer and shook Lucas' hand vigorously. Hi Lucas! giggled Jennifer as she stood up and offered her chair to him and took another chair next to him. What? Oh sorry Gilbert, Lucas put his head in his hands and tried to block out the noise from the drunken idiots and the country music that was not soothing at all. Jennifer, to answer your question I was here for a holiday and I heard all about it it on the news. Such a tragedy isn't it? By the way how is Tony? the bartender handed Jennifer her Lemon Lime Bitters and she sucked on the cool liquid. What do you expect Gilbert? He just lost his fiancee and you're asking about how he is going? You are such a disgrace! We know... Jennifer snapped at Gilbert but Lucas gave her a little kick in the shin which stopped her from exploding into an angry frenzy, Sorry Gilbert, She apologised quietly. No biggy. I shouldn't have asked like that, shrugged Gilbert sipping on his water. There was a moments silence before Gilbert glanced at his watch. Sorry but I have to go now. It was lovely catching up with you, he knocked over his glass sending a pool of water all over the red felt bench top but Lucas grabbed his arm and held it firm. You're not going anywhere, was Lucas' short reply. Mate, you better let go of me, Gilbert's voice was filled with anger as his sapphire eyes gazed into Lucas'. Gilbert searched around in his pockets for a weapon it seemed to Jennifer but he found nothing except a pen. Gilbert didn't seem to care and Jennifer finally realised why. The penny had dropped. The ball of the pen was covered in a green liquid that stuck to the ball but it was runny and had little bits of debris in it. This was no

fluorescent green pen this was poison. Lucas dodge! screamed Jennifer reaching out to Lucas' bad arm and dragging it down, forcing Lucas to bend over. Gilbert ran right over Lucas' back and Lucas tossed him over his shoulder. The pain from his arm shot right through him as he clutched at it. Jennifer saw Lucas grab his arm but she was blinded as Gilbert wrapped his arm around her neck with the pen on her neck, dripping slowly down. Everyone in the bar stopped and ran outside except the nice bartender who hid behind the bench. Gilbert started backing up slowly with the pen pushing slightly harder each step they took. Gilbert, stop. We know that you've killed many people. We know someone who can help you, who can treat you. You would never act like this, Lucas slowly and cautiously took tiny steps towards Gilbert as he held out his hand. No! I'm not letting you take me away from Jennifer! We are meant to be together even if that means killing her. I'm prepared to do anything! screamed Gilbert. Lucas go. I'll be fine, just GO! yelled Jennifer frantically. Lucas obeyed and cautiously backed out of the bar. He definitely did not like this idea. But something struck him. The bartender was still in there! That's why Jennifer asked me to back out of the room. Gilbert was still holding Jennifer but his grip had loosened and he was soft with his movements. He must've thought we are alone, thought Jennifer. Gilbert took the pen away from Jennifer's throat and swung her around to face him. His eyes were wild and crazy and he was drooling. Jennifer smiled and leaned in closer to Gilbert. Gilbert, thanks for killing off my crazy cousin and my brat of a friend. Let's get out of here, Jennifer wrapped her arms around his neck. She was thankful for her acting classes. All right. But can we just stay here for a while? Like I mean just stay in this position? asked Gilbert resting his chin on Jennifer's auburn head. Sure, whispered Jennifer. The two figure were standing there in each others arms for a while. But little did Gilbert know that there was a S.W.A.T team outside armed with weapons. Jennifer knew and looked out the window. Gilbert, kiss me, she murmured staring into his wild eyes. Gilbert leaned in towards her but Jennifer was too quick for him. She kneed him in the groin. Gilbert staggered

to the floor groaning. You slimy brat! he hissed. Well what are you going to expect from someone who is with a deranged murderer? asked Jennifer. Gilbert stood up and charged at Jennifer. Jennifer went to grab a fork but was too late. Gilbert swung at her cheek and a sickening thump split the air. Jennifer collapsed to the floor. But Gilbert didn't care, if he wanted to stay with Jennifer well this is how he will do it. He towered over Jennifer, a grimacing smile crossed his lips. Jennifer pushed backwards with one hand while the other was nurturing her injured face. She kept on crawling backwards but she was prevented from reaching the door by slamming into the corner of a table. Fortunately the window was next to her where a sniper was waiting for a signal. Jennifer nodded her head but they didn't see her, Gilbert did. Who are you noddin' at you brat! he sneered coming closer with the poison pen. Just some friends outside, shrugged Jennifer as she put her leg up waiting for the end. Gilbert didn't take notice of Jennifer's leg but that was a bad mistake. Jennifer lashed out with her leg and kicked him in the shins. She scrambled up and ran towards the door but Gilbert jumped on top of her, tackling her towards the ground. Jennifer tried fighting back but found it was no use. Gilbert grabbed a rope and a gag piece and wrapped the rope around her wrists. He pulled down on her auburn hair, forcing her to tip her head back as he shoved the gag piece in her mouth. He released her hair and took a step back, admiring his work. Now, any last praises for the living? Because you wont ever see your precious boyfriend again, let alone your parents, he laughed. He walked over again and released the gag piece from Jennifer's mouth and peered at her hard. Yes. I want you to realise that if Lucas didn't love me, I would've certainly gone straight to you. You would have had a better life. Also, where are my parents Gilbert? I know you've held them hostage! screamed Jennifer. Don't worry, you will see them very soon Jennifer my pet. Anything else? queried Gilbert. Yeah, you are one sick person. A DANGEROUS person, Jennifer couldn't raise her voice high enough to be heard. Yeah well I already know that and for your information I'm a lovely person but you just can't see that past your

ignorance, brat, he sneered advancing towards her stiff body. Gilbert was putting the gag piece in Jennifers mouth again but Jennifer closed her teeth hard on Gilberts finger and ripped off a chink of skin. Jennifer spat it out and kicked Gilbert in the stomach, causing him to tumble backwards and hit a table with a glass sitting on top. The glass toppled over crashed. That was loud enough to tell the S.W.A.T team the Jennifer was in trouble. The door kicked open and the team came barging, a nurse came immediately to Jennifer's aid and she was carried out of the inn. GET DOWN ON THE GROUND NOW! shouted a burly S.W.A.T team member was all Jennifer heard before she blacked out.

Chapter 5
Jennifer was in a court room with Lucas by her side squeezing her hand. Gilbert was chained around his feet and hands as he confessed guilty for killing, torturing and violation towards a public inn and putting several people in danger. He was immediately taken away as he hung his head in shame. Unfortunately Gilbert had to walk right by Jennifer. There was a moment where everything stopped and they stared into each others eyes. Gilberts with shame and Jennifers with disappointment. Gilbert was put away for a life sentence but many people died during his actions which he took. Tom died after a fatal stabbing at a party, Sammy after a dreadful torturing session and a gun shot wound to her head and Jennifer's parents who were suffocated behind the Black Spur Inn. A few weeks after the prosecution, everything was back to normal. No one ever heard about Gilbert but questions and rumors were still being spread. Lucas and Jennifer were insanely in love and were inseparable. It was a bitter cold winter night and Jennifer was wrapped up in a wool scarf with fur lined boots. She was sitting in a foggy field underneath an oak tree with cows who were mooing for their evening feed. She gazed out over the setting sun watching it's beauty soak up all the land around her. A black figure slid the latch across the gate and it swung open with a creak. Jennifer smiled and made herself look attractive. The figure climbed up the field, their shadow just visible because of the fog. The figure smiled as they saw the beautiful figure sitting right in front of them. Hey, Jennifer whispered patting the blanket beside her, motioning for the figure to sit down with her. Hi, Lucas whispered back, taking the spot next to Jennifer. Lucas placed a basket down between them before he leaned over and kissed Jennifer on the lips. His lips were soft and warm against Jennifer's frozen lips. But, Lucas stood up. Jennifer looked up at him confused.

Is everything okay? concern took the better of Jennifer and she rushed into his arms, burying her face in his leather jacket. Everything is fine Jennifer, don't worry. Just sit down for a second, He gently pushed her away from his chest. You are not breaking up with me are you? asked Jennifer, a tear pricking her eyes. No! Of course not. I don't know who would want to break up wit you. You are... are smart and kind and beautiful. I know I have not known you for a year yet, but I think this will work. If you can't decide, have as much time as you want, explained Lucas as he got down on one knee and reached inside his pocket and brought out a blue velvet case, Jennifer, will you marry me? Lucas opened the case and inside was the most breath taking ring that Jennifer had ever seen. This must've cost thousands. Yes. Yes I would love to marry you! Jennifer ran in to Lucas' arms and he stroked her auburn hair. Lucas took the diamond ring out of the case and placed it on Jennifer's finger. The moon was out now and Jennifer held her left hand out towards the moonlight. She admired it before the question leaked out of her. Where did you get this ring? she asked still admiring her ring. It was your mum's, murmured Lucas. Jennifer was gobsmacked. This was her mother's ring. She had never seen it before. Do you like it? asked Lucas not sure if he had done the right thing. Wow! It's beautiful! exclaimed Jennifer. It felt like they stayed in each others arms forever.
