for the office of Speaker are not present in the
Chamber during the consideration of the other
nominees and during the vote, pursuant to the
Election of speaker Nevada Open Meeting Law and the parliamentary

Pursuant to Rule II(c) of the Rules of the Senate,

“Whenever a vacancy exists in the Senate, the
Speaker shall enable qualified members of the
Association to petition for appointment to the seat.
The Speaker shall, at a minimum, cause an
advertisement to be placed in the Nevada
Sagebrush to solicit applicants for a vacant seat.
Such an advertisement shall run for two
consecutive issues.” The Seat in the College of
Liberal Arts now vacant, caused by the resignation
of the Honorable Matthew Maggy, is declared
vacant. Petitions for appointment to the seat will
be accepted in the manner provided by the Rules.

Committees.

The SPEAKER. The next order of business is Agenda Item 10,


Appointment of Senators to Committees.

The next order of business is the election of


Senators to Committees. The Chair will remind the
members that under the Rule IX(g)(1), each
committee must be composed of between 5 and 9
members, and each Senator must serve on at least
two committees. The Committee on Budget and
Finance must have at least 7 members.

Furthermore, once the committee assignments are


decided, the Senate will consider a resolution to
formalize and memorialize the assignments. The
Senate may also choose the chair of each
committee once the membership of the
committees is selected. The members of each
committee may caucus tonight to make a
recommendation to the Senate who should be
chair. If no selection is made tonight, each
committee will have the power to select its chair at
its first meeting.

When the Inaugural Ceremonies have concluded, the Senate will retire to its
chamber and proceed with its business. The Senate will be formally sitting
during the ceremonies.
