Stephen L. Syverud is a composer, performer, and member of backGammon, a free improvisation ensemble, which has performed at Spark Electronic Music Festival, SEAMUS, International Society for Improvisational Music, and local venues in the Chicago area. He taught and established/directed Electronic Music Studios at Northwestern University, Grinnell College, Jackson State University, and University of Wisconsin, Parkside. Mr. Syverud received BA/MA degrees in composition from San Francisco State University and the Ph.D. degree in composition from the University of Iowa. Biography is listed in the International Who's Who in Music and Musicians Directory. Syverud is the recipient of numerous grants, awards, and commissions. His composition include pieces for solo instruments and electronics, multimedia pieces, and for most standard instrumental/vocal ensembles have been performed throughout the world. Syverud has lectured at various schools in the United States and other countries on aesthetics and compositional procedures including performances and lectures in Budapest, Hungary and Athens, Greece. He was the recipient of a four-month scholar's grant given by The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board and invited to teach classes at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, Hungary during Spring, 2001.
