 Based on 5 Japanese words that begin with S  Focuses on effective work place organization and standardized work procedures  Simplifies work environment, reduces waste while improving safety, quality, and efficiency

Sort (Seiri)
 First S focuses on eliminating unnecessary items from the workplace

Red tag is placed on all items not required for your job These items are moved to a central holding area Occasionally used items are then moved to a more organized storage location outside work area

 Third S focuses on a clean work area  Clean the work area after the clutter and junk has been eliminated  Follow-up cleaning everyday to sustain the improvement  Take Pride in a clean and clutter-free work area

 Changes to notice


Equipment and facility  Air, oil, and material leaks  Repeat contamination

 These changes, if left unattended, could lead to equipment failure and loss of production. Both add up to impact companys bottom line.

 Fourth S focuses on standardizing best practices  Actively participate in the development and documentation of standards  Most Valuable Asset

Sustain (Shitsuke)
 Fifth S focuses on sustaining the changes  This is by far the most difficult S to implement and achieve  Human nature is to resist change  More than a few organizations have found themselves with a dirty cluttered shop a few months following their attempt to implement 5S  The tendency is to return to the status quo and the comfort zone of the "old way" of doing things  Sustain focuses on defining a new status quo and standard of work place organization
