Vote Emily Harvey for Co-Chair

I attended the NUS LGBT* Conference this year and this helped me gain experience of the NUS LGBT* movement and how it is run and works. It also inspired me to run for CoChair and get more involved in the movement as a whole.

Hi, my name is Emily Harvey and I'm a first year currently studying history and politics. I would like to run to become a Co-Chair for the LGBTQ association. Please do not hesitate to email me regarding my manifesto at ejh45@student.le.ac.uk.

I have been a first year Course Rep since joining university this year, and during this time I have been developing my skills of impartiality and being able to fairly represent my subject peers. I have been awarded Best Newcomer for my work, and have also been nominated for the Leicester Student of the Year Award.

My Experience

I have also been nominated for the Leicester Student Award for my volunteering work. Through volunteering and being a course rep, I have gained the ability to efficiently dedicate

Recently, I have also been involved in sessions helping Trade and have filled out a form ready to get involved in volunteering regularly with them from September. I have been involved in the Association for the whole year, attending a number of the socials, and helping out at a number of stalls including the LGBT* History Month and Internal Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.

1.

My Privacy is incredibly important for us as a Welfare Group, so I Aims want to change the Facebook Group from Closed to
Secret. This will ensure members of the Association cant see other members, and decrease the chance that members will be outed by being involved in the association Facebook page.

Increase privacy settings on the University LGBTQA Facebook Page.

3. To lobby for greater equality within the Student Union and ensure they keep LGBT* issues at the heart of their policies and debates. Expand on my good relationship with the Saabs (which I have gained from my work on a number of Committees), and increase their presence at some of our events. Push the Union to directly fund a black and Trans* delegate for the NUS LGBT* Conference (my Conference report contains more details as to why). If this is not possible, then I intend to change the election process to increase awareness of the events at conference and ensure all minorities are represented where possible. I want to improve the registration process of Delegates, to speed it up and ensure the deadline to submit Motions is not missed. In addition, I will continue campaigning for gender-neutral facilities and toilets around University campus. I will also attend Parliament as much as I can to make sure LGBT* issues are raised and addressed, and intend to encourage other members to do the same. I will work with the Campaigns and Welfare officers to achieve these aims.

I propose to do this by creating a Like page on Facebook (as well as the secret group page) and a separate Facebook account called Emily Harvey LGBTQ Co-Chair. The Like is available for anyone to like, and will give details of how to contact this Co-Chair account. Anyone who wants to be added to the Secret group must privately message a committee member asking to be added. The Co-Chair account will be separate from my personal account, and thus used specifically within my role as co-chair, as a way for members of the Association to contact me with problems or questions to which I can provide impartial views and help. I will explain this further at the AGM.

2. Work closely with the LGBT Centre in town and Trade Were lucky to have an LGBT Centre and Trade organisation so close to the uni; they have excellent welfare services, sexual health resources, social events, clubs and other services . I am very keen for the association to continue working with these organisations and strengthen our links.

4. Increase opportunities for members of the Association to I have attended a couple of Condom-Packing sessions this term, get involved in LGBTQ activism on a local and national and have really enjoyed it. I think its a good idea to encourage level. more members of the LGBTQ Association to partake in this activity. One way in which I propose for this to happen is by Work closely with Campaigns Officer to increase activism on exploring the idea of having Trade come in to the university a campus and visibility of the Association to the student body. few times a year, possibly to attend LGBTeaQ. The committee could help to organise for trade to bring condom-packing Help the association to achieve greater presence at the
