ALI PASHA TEPELENA (1740-1822)

Ali pasha was an Albanian hero who established the greatest pashaluk in the Ottoman Empire. Although a rebel leader in his youth, Ali Pasha entered the service of the Sultan where he used his great linguistic, diplomatic and military skills to establish a powerful position for himself. He established and maintained contacts with all the great powers of Europe, including Napoleon, Admiral Nelson and the Russian Czar. Lord Byron, the great English poet who devoted part of his greatest poems to Albania and Albanians. During his reign, he carried out extensive architectural projects, built roads and drained marshes. His strict social policies made Albania almost crime free. Eventually, Ali Pasha fell victim to conspiring rivals in Albania and Turkey. He was betrayed and deserted, but he fought to the bitter end and was killed in 1822. .
