Preface
In this era, where the technology is growing in a very faster speed and every positive change is bringing new and enhanced features with them, the cellular phones are at the very hot issue in this growing technology. The technologies in these cellular/mobile phones are enhancing and developing day by day, including new features of entertainment, and multiple options like imaging facilities, movie/animation features, sound technologies etc. When the technology is the matter, every consumer/user prefers the latest, best and interacting featured technologies and also prefers these facilities in less cost. So, in this view, there is a very big and fast competition between many companies/manufacturers of cellular phones at the world level.

Introduction to the Organization Company Information:


NOKIA is the world leader in mobile communications backed by its experience, innovation, user-friendliness and secure solutions. It is a very well knowned company having its vast offices world wide. Their specialized product is cellular phones. They have many house hold items as well.

Board of Directors:The current members of Nokia's Board of Directors were elected at the Annual General Meeting on March 27, 2003. Click here for a short rsum and information on the members' shareholdings.

Corporate Responsibility:Being a good corporate citizen means meeting responsibilities towards individuals, the environment, and society in general. We are making corporate responsibility an integral part of decision-making in all parts of our business. Financial Factor:Nokia achieves excellent profitability in the first quarter 2003 and mobile phone volumes grow faster than market.

Mission Statement:Many organizations develop formal mission statements that answer these questions. A mission statement is a statement of the organizations urposewhat it wants to accomplish in the larger environment. A clear mission statement acts as an invisible hand that guides people in the organization. The mission statement of NOKIA is CONNECTING PEOPLE Goals:The goal of NOKIA is to be a good corporate citizen wherever we operate, as a responsible and contributing member of society. We take part in long-term projects aimed at helping young people create their own place in the world, for example through our global youth programs.

Digital Bridging:Digital Bridging is an integral part of everyday business. It is also an important part of the company's Corporate Community Involvement activities that focus on youth and education.

Marketing Objectives:Marketing objectives presents a brief summary of the main goals and the recommendations of the plan for management review, helping top management to find the plans major points quickly.

Target Market:The target market of NOKIA is very wide. Its products are demanded world wide and are given preference at any other cellular company in the world. They have comparatively low rates than the other companies and have a very good and interactive performance and interesting features, so because of these features, people prefer NOKIA than the other companies. Specially in Asia, Europe, America and the Middle East, NOKIA has a very big market. It is manufacturing GSM and AMPS technologies cellular sets which are meeting every kind of consumers requirements. In 2002, Nokia's largest markets were US, UK, China, Germany, Italy, France, UAE, Thailand, Brazil and Poland.

Portfolio Analysis:The major activity in srategic management is business portfolio analysis whereby management evaluates the business making up the company. The company will want to put strong resources into its most profitable business and phase down or drop its weaker ones. So while analyzing the portfolio of NOKIA, it was found that its product of cellular phones, especially its GSM sets were making more profit to the company as compare to its other products. So the company invested more budget in this area and started development on this area to earn the maximum profit. But in the mean while, the company didnt neglected their other products and invested more money on the development of those products.

Micro and Macro Environmental Factors Effecting Business


The actions and forces outside marketing that affect marketing managements ability to develop and maintain successful transactions within target customers, is called the marketing environment. Environmental considerations are integrated into every area of company life and at every phase of our products' life cycle. We believe in eco-efficiency and sustainability - to respect nature and the needs of future generations. Nokia's new Environmental Report 2002 states the company's understanding of the environmental aspects and impacts of its activities. There are two categories of marketing environment: 1. Competitive Analysis:Visually, there is no any key competitor to NOKIA as comparing its vast market and demand, but still, we can consider the following companies as its competitors:

These competitors of NOKIA has also a big market, but as compared to NOKIA, we cannot say that they can compete this organization at the same level of competition.

Social Factors:Every Nokia employee has influence over Nokia's performance and reputation in issues of health, safety, security, employee relations, corporate citizenship and human rights.

Marketing Strategy
As we move into the Mobile World, we remain committed to strong growth, profitability and responsible market leadership.

Strategic Direction:The mobile phone is fast becoming the centerpiece of personal communication, allowing us access to an ever-widening range of services. Today, we are moving from voice services to services driven by data and multimedia.

Business Environment:Nokia competes in the global telecommunications industry in general and in the mobile industry in particular, each of which has exhibited rapid growth, change and convergence in recent years.

Suggestions
Though the NOKIA is the worlds largest cellular phone company and has the very efficient features and facilities but there are some suggestions by me after analyzing and researching about this company. It should decrease its prices of the sets so that the sets may become in reach of every user and the market may increase and become the cause of increasing profit rate. Its spare parts should be available in its every market. There should be replace warrenty in case of defection. Project description
The Where R U? project is supposed to let people figure out where their friends are by sending an SMS using a special format. The mobile phone that receives this special SMS will need the Where R U client installed and a bluetooth GPS connected. The phone will recognize the SMS, then fetch the phones location from the GPS, and send this information to a server using the XML-RPC protocol. The server will then fetch a map based on the GPS information, and send this back to the user who wanted the information in the first place. The server is supposed to be able to send information back to the user in several different formats. This might be as an MMS, to an email address, og maybe post the information as an RSS feed. Click on the figure below to see the information flow in the Where R U project.

The Where R U client will be primarily tested on a Nokia 6680 phone connected to a Holux GPSlim GPS receiver.

Project deliverances

Mobile client
The mobile client is an application that can be installed on a series 60 mobile phone. The application will be written in the Python programming language using Python for Series 60. The mobile phone is required to install Python for Series 60 before the Where R U

application. When started, the application will listen on the inbox of the phone for incoming messages. Once a message is received, the application will scan the message to see if it has the correct format for Where R U messages. If so, the application will connect to the GPS and fetch information from it, and send this information to a server. The message will be sent as an XML-RPC message using HTTP as transfer mechanism.

Server application
The server application will receive XML-RPC messages from Where R U clients, and do whatever these messages tells the server to do. The server will fetch a map from an online WMS based on the GPS coordinates it receives, and it will send the image to the user who asked for the information. The different formats that the server will support is not yet decided, but some ideas are MMS, mail and RSS. The server application will most likely be implemented using the PHP programming language.

Project report
This report will contain information about how I went about to do the Where R U project. The report will be a typical scientific paper containing information such as: Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion (IMRaD) along with some other information.

Work done

Mobile client
So far most of the work has just been to test out the different parts of Python for Series 60. I have tested out the Inbox module that lets an application listen on the inbox for incoming messages. The application intercepts the message before the mobile phone tells the user that it has received a message. Because of that the application can do this part without the interaction of the user (if the application is configured in such a manner). I have also made some attempts to connect to the bluetooth GPS but this requires interaction from the user, so more work will be done on this part so that the application can work without any interaction. I have however managed to fetch information from the GPS. Regarding posting information to an external server from the phone, a python xmlrpc library will be used. To send the message the user must connect the mobile phone to the net, and this part requires interaction from the user. Some tests have been made and I have sucessfully sent XML-RPC messages from the mobile phone to a simple XML-RPC server implemented using PHP. In other words, most of the parts of the client has been tested, so now I just have to put them together.

Server application
No work has been done on the server application yet. I have however made a small implementation of an XML-RPC server using PHP for testing purposes.

Project report
Some parts of the project report has been started. The portfolio 2 assignment in the Forskning, skriving og publisering course will work as a starting point for the final report, although it has to be reorganized. The portfolio 2 assignment can be found here. The living report for this project will be found on this blog as soon as it is started.

Future work

Mobile client
As stated above, the parts of the application will have to be put together in one piece of software. More work will be put in trying to make the application as silent as possible (i.e. no interaction from the user is required). There are some parts of the application that this might not be possible with, such as connecting the phone to the net, but there are some parts that I have made by now that can be made more silent). The application should also include some options that users can set. The most important option might be to enable the user of the phone to decide on who will be allowed to request information using the Where R U application. This might be as simple as just defiing a list of phonenumbers that can request information. The format of the SMS must be set as well. The format should be as easy as possible. Some examples: "whereru mms" This would send the answer as an MMS back to the user containing a map. "whereru user@domain.com" This would send a mail to user@domain.com along with the map. Those are just examples. As stated, the format has not yet been decided.

Server application
As stated, no work has been done on the server application yet. The application will be an XML-RPC server that will receive messages from Where R U clients, and send information to the user that wanted the information.

Mobile Design Indias first event focuses on the theme of Designing for India The Indian market is a unique mobile innovation playground and untapped opportunity for anyone wanting to develop mass-market mobile experiences that needs to work across a myriad of languages, operators, income-segments, networks and user needs. Mobile has revolutionized the way people conduct business, get entertained, educated, married, to keeping up with cricket scores. On one side the Indian masses go for aspirational experiences that make them stand out.
