Zimbabwe ALMA Quarterly Report, Quarter One, 2013

Progress
Zimbabwe has made steady progress in scaling-up malaria control interventions and has been successful in attracting resources through the Global Fund, including through Rounds 8 and 10. Zimbabwe has recently banned oral artemisinin-based monotherapies from the country. Zimbabwe has introduced a policy on Community Case Management of malaria but has yet to introduce a policy on Community Case Management of pneumonia. Zimbabwe has increased the coverage of tracer MNCH interventions, in particular PMTCT and DPT3. It is one of the top 10 high-mortality countries globally with a steep annual rate of reduction in under-five mortality rate.

Impact
The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2011 was 319,935 with 451 deaths.

Key Challenge
Delays and under-reporting of malaria cases and deaths from the National Health Information System, leading to inconsistent reporting on malaria mortality data.
