Malaria is endemic in all parts of Zambia and transmission is seasonal. The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2011 was 4,607,908 with 4,540 deaths.

Progress
Zambia has made significant progress in scaling-up malaria control interventions. The country has achieved high coverage of case management of malaria, as well as LLINs. Zambia has banned oral artemisinin-based monotherapies and has introduced a policy on Community Case Management of malaria and has taken steps to introduce a policy on Community Case Management of pneumonia. The country has committed additional resources to ACT and RDT procurement. Zambia has also made significant progress in tracer MNCH interventions, in particular, increasing coverage of PMTCT. Zambia has demonstrated an over 50% decline in under-five mortality rates since 1990.

Impact
There has been significant impact in malaria control in Zambia. The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2011 was 4,607,908 with 4,540 deaths.

Key Challenge
With the cancellation of the Global Fund Round 11, there is a risk that high coverage will not be sustained beyond 2013 unless the longer term funding gaps are closed.
